Ah yes, Ingrid Hoffman. You’ve seen her tangoing across the Food Network since 2007. Now, one might assume she is a trained cooking professional who just happens to like low cut shirts and lipstick, but come on, we all know better.

Miss Hoffman’s Food Network Resume:

Actress – check! She appeared in 16 Spanish soap operas by the age of 20.

Model – check!

Luxury fashion boutique store owner in Miami – check!

Culinary training… um, her mother was a caterer, does that count?

No one here is saying sweet Ingrid is a horrible person who should be banished to a life of working as an extra on the new 90210, or shooting John Tesh album covers,  but is the FOOD NETWORK really the right place for her? Of all of the wonderful Latin cooks out there, she is the best they could find? Now, I know her mother opened a restaurant where they cooked on lava rocks, and everyone loved it, yada yada yada, but that association hardly qualifies Ingrid to be of the few people who get the rare opportunity to enlighten American viewers on the joys of food.

Bottom line: The majority of Food Network hosts are personalities first, and chefs second – and that is Simply Depressioso.

    That really sums it up for me. I don’t want people to be uptight bookwads but a proper balance is “simply” needed.

    With Daisy Martinez’ arrival at FN I think Ingrid Hoffmans days are numbered. While Daisy isn’t a chef she can cook circles around Ingrid.

    Ingrid is better off without the FN ruining her future. I hope she told them to shove off.

    Why does she always cook with lime? I’d like to see an episode where she isn’t squeezing lime juice all over the camera in a frenzy of dance moves.

    It seems to me like she is out of her element and phony, perhaps due to FN directing her to be a way she isn’t. If it wasn’t for her being so over the top, and cooking meals that, on a good day, could only inspire a drunken frat boy in the mood for mexican, she wouldn’t be half bad. I do not think FN is the place for her.

    I never watched a single episode of her show, so I can’t comment on it. One thing I will say is that I don’t think this show ever stood a chance from the get-go. Being on once every weekday was a bad move on FN’s part, considering how afternoon weekday shows are almost entirely daily. Plus, the lack of promotion on FN’s part was always evident.

    Now that Daisy is on FN, I noticed that public television is no longer carrying her show “Daisy Cooks!” (here in NJ, it was televised on “Create”).

    well folks, stick a fork in her…she’s done. i heard the network pulled the plug on ingrid hoffmann’s show. they found in Daisy a warmer, and certainly more qualified Latina host to replace her.

    now we can safely remove our earplugs…!

    When Ingrid’s show started I knew FN would hire anyone and had no standards.

    Whatever happened to the black haired lady who won The Next Food Network Star a few years ago. She had black curly hair, complained about wanting to go home constantly and then won amazingly.

    Anyone Is Hired,— apparently the brunette “Chef Next Door” felt all the pressure of winning and doing a regular show was too much for her. I read she moved to France and gave up the FN gig.

    Amy Finley, who attempted, IMO, faux-french was a complete trainwreck.

    I think Bob Tuschman had some fancy-home-chef-fetish and just had to try to make Amy fit the mold he had in his head (like they’re now doing with Melissa D’Arabian).

    Amy was beyond awful. My favorite episode was her using packaged lunchmeat ham rolled around asparagus with her version of a white sauce. Ugh. She talked with her knife, swinging it around, pointing at food and pans etc. I had to write FN to complain.

    As I recall only 3-4 episodes were shown. She complained that blogs/press/internet had been ‘mean’ to her, so she quit.

    The odd thing was when Jag was eliminated/quit (because someone at FN dropped the ball and hadn’t checked his credentials) they brought Amy back after she had been sent home the week before. When Jag left, Rory should’ve won. But they brought Amy back. It was so wrong. Bob wanted Amy, and he got her alright. Then FN showed everyone what all the viewers already knew–she was awful!

      Jag OR Rory would have been better than Clueless Amy. She was too thin skinned (and too untalented) to ever “make it” at anything.

    I enjoy her and her recipes. Her personality jumps off the screen. When her show ends, I want to pick up a spatula. When Giada’s show ends…I want to pick up a cigarette. That’s the differnce between the two.

    I realize this thread is ancient but whenever I see this woman I think of Tracey Ullman’s riff on LEEEEENDA ALLL-VAAA-REZZZ (Linda Alvarez). Hysterical bit. Just a white woman acting like a Latina newscaster acting like a white woman.

      Then get the hell away from Latin American cuisine. Oh, and Thai food too. If you can’t get with cilantro, you don’t deserve a hearty, delicious bowl of Mexican caldo, pinto beans, pico de gallo, or barbacoa (which tastes sublime with diced onions and cilantro), or any of the delicious concoctions in Thai cuisine.

      BTW, I find that parsley has a considerably sharper taste to it than the mild cilantro I was raised with. I marvel at all those people who wrinkle their noses at cilantro and then turn around and substitute it with parsley. It’s, like, hello, that’s like using scotch bonnet peppers in your salsa because you find serranos too hot.

    Ingrid had my 16 year old son cracking up when on one episode she was using lemongrass in one of her recipes. She picks up the lemongrass and smells it and says “lemongrass is very …. lemony”. We were laughing for a good hour. I cannot watch Food Network anymore after reading this site. Now I laugh when I see them and I turn to public access shows for real chefs/cooks.

    Ingrid is to latin cooking what rachel ray is to new american cuisine. Noone cares if she’s the real deal in the kitchen they watch to get simple tips. To be able to adopt something that you don’t have to be a pretentious food snob to introduce to your family. Daisy is a bore.

    I understand your issue with the credentials of the people who cook on Food Network. But I will also say that to the common person who is NOT a professional chef, a lot of the people on the shows do provide good ideas. Although they may not be on a professional/gourmet chef level, alot of the recipes have ingredients that are easy to access and provide good flavor. Watching Food Network has inspired me to learn to cook and now I am researching more of the “real chefs” and learning about the finer ingredients and cooking techniques. I personally love Ingrid Hoffman’s recipes and make them all the time. I understand she is not Rick Bayless but as a single mom, I have found his recipes require a lot of time and ingredients that cannot be found in the normal grocery store. I love his recipes….on special occasions when I have the time to prepare it.

      I would not take most of the comments here too seriously. Most of them sound like advanced and above average cooks, so they like a bit more challenge and creativity in the food they prepare. They are just angry that FN has no cook or chef that deals exclusively with more intricate recipes/techniques. It just seems like ALL the shows are pandering to the average and below average cook, and the recipes from each of the hosts are all pretty much the same. But I think we all agree that FN is a good starting point for the beginning cook, and the end results on the food are pretty decent given the simplicity of the recipes.

      I actually thought Ingrid’s show was not that bad. Her show was pretty fast paced (always moving along, no strange silences), so I never really got annoyed watching her. Maybe nothing particularly creative or awe inducing, but the food gets the job done. Good to know FN has inspired you!

        We have to give the lady some credit. Her mom is trained chef, so she must have learned something. She’s doing nothing more than what Rachel Ray has been capitalizing on. The food network to me is okay, but today more of what Pop radio is to music. It seems other networks have some better food shows, Top Chef Etc, and the aren’t all about food.

    A few words about Ingrid: I actually like her alot, and you need to go to YouTube and find videos of her that are NOT on Food Network. Her personality is toned down tremendously when you see her doing something that’s not part of FN. There’s no mistake that the network Rachaeled her while she was doing shows for them. On the other hand, she’s actually in the food truck business in Miami these days and if I’m a betting man (which I am) I would say that her truck could give any of the ones on Tyler’s new rip-off show a serious run for it.

      Funny how you have to dig around on YouTube to find Ingrid these days.

      I’ve tried her roach coach fare…her food truck menu is as uninspired as her cookbook.
