Why are they always talking about high school? That was 25 years ago!! I agree that Pat is a nice looking man, but his laugh sounds so fake that it’s anoying. Have you looked up their restaurant reviews? It’s very, very negative, from the food to the overall look of the place. I agree with someone else that they are BOTH fake! In my opinion it’s bad when you claim to be from the south and don’t even know how to cut up Collard Greens. They don’t need a show and I also heard (from someone close to me) that the restaurant is NOT what they claim it to be.
im from the south and i really didnt know that there was a spaecial way to chop greens…..i mean they are going to wilt down anyway……so i dont chop mine i pull the rib part out and break the rest up by hand
These people have no business being on television. “Ghetto antics” and “brown shuggah” aside (which the fact that this is tolerated by anyone is shocking..), as cooks (and I say “cooks” because “chef” is a title to be earned) the Neely’s fall short in a spectacular and stellar manner. A recent example:
“Dis heeya mix uh cerr-rey, onions and curr-rits, is just good…dis great, you should be put dis in urry-thin yaw…”
Hint, stupid: its referred ro as “mirepoix” and has been for hundreds of years.

It is funny to me that they have a cooking show and you are speaking on their dialect. Its equally funny how people who want to assert some false superiority or false intelligence make themselves look jealous and ignorant. I have two grandparents that were private gourmet chefs and they respected other forms of cooking. A true CHEF would not be intimidated by the success of diverse people or diverse styles of cooking so REAL CHEF continue to speak your ignorance if you like. However, I would recommend you learn a valuable life lesson that diversity and innovation are what drive any industry.
Your comments were well stated and your take on the Neelys was on the money. I applaud their ability to market themselves and their array of businesses. It’s great to see a married couple that enjoys spending so much time with each other and are successful at it on and off the camera.

You’re right, the Neeleys are Ghetto (with a capital ‘G”)! We have a game in my family – we count the amount of times that Pat Neeley says ‘y’all’ in each episode! As far as chefs go, many have left the Cooking Network (Batali, Emero Lagassi). A chef goes to school to earn that title. The Network now puts on anyone who owns a restaurant and can kiss up!
So does that make Paula Deen ghetto also? She uses “y’all” more than enough times…before you start to criticize make sure you know what you’re talking about. I can’t stand the Neely’s. To borrow a phrase from Seinfeld “they are so schmoopy”. I’m all about love and togetherness,but they take it to a sickening level that is almost unbareable to watch.Gina is annoying and Pat is totally whooped.I wish they would tone it down a bit cause they cook some delicious looking food,but I almost can’t take 30 whole minutes of it.
I know we have freedom of speech… but why know what’s working for them. If they’re happy being “lovey-dovey” I’m happy for them. If he was putting her down not letting her get a word in that would be an issue too. I give ‘kuddos’ for two people that respect and treat each other well. I am with you on turning of the TV when they come on. I counted Pat saying ya’ll 8 times before the first break. The brown sugah and refering to her as mama is just as aggrevating. This woman is becoming a monster.On a recent episode of Dear Food Network, Gina Neely practically ruined the whole show with her ghetto antics. I knew she would need only a few second before she started one of her Memphis tribal dances and that was it for me. I won’t go near the station of if I know she is near.

Actually Paula Deen,was said to discover the Neelys. On a road trip for the Food Network, she came across the Neelys and the rest is history. Lastly, we all are different we do not like the same things. But that is really no reason to criticize someone. I am southern and I love good southern cooking.

Please, people watch the Neely’s because they cook good food and because they are down to earth. The way they talk is no different than Paula Dean and her country self (who by the way, I love!), should she learn how to talk as well, or is it ok for her?
They turn most people off because they exhibit real love between two people and for those who can’t relate…….they hate it because they don’t understand it and possibly have never experienced that kind of love. The fact that you and Marylou even bring up the color issue let’s me know that you obviously have a problem with the color of their skin and that’s real, sad, but real. The only difference between them and most of the Food Network stars is that they are a couple and everyone else hosts their shows on their own without a co-host. What would be the purpose of the show if they didn’t show the joys of cooking in the kitchen with your spouse? Hell I can watch people arguing and fighting on the movie channels, reality shows, court t.v.’s. The fact is, when I turn to the Food Network, I’m looking for fun, food and relaxation. Aside from that, the Neely’s are not the only Food Network hosts with flaws, I can go through just about every Food Network host and point out their flaws, this includes Guy Fieri, Giada, Ina Garten, Sandra Lee and so on, but I won’t because each show brings something different to the table and that’s what I like about them all! I just don’t see how you can hate on someone because of the way they talk, or because of the way they dance, or even because of the way they choose to express their love for one another (which by the way does not include them sticking their tongues down each others throat, or ripping off each others clothes)….pathetic!

I agree completely. I just so happened to stumble upon this site because I was curious about the Neely’s ages and I have been appalled at some of the negative comments people will write behind the veil of anonymity. I love the Neelys. As a matter of fact I have my tv set to record them whenever they come on and I protect many of their episodes so my husband and I can go back and try to re-create the dishes ourselves. I just love what they show of their relationship. Why is a man considered “whooped or whipped” just because he is not ashamed of outwardly expressing his love for the woman he loves? For those of you who are women (and men for that matter) and complaining about the way they show their love, I do suggest you look in a mirror and make a true assessment of your own relationship. Who ever you are with should treat you with not only love behind closed doors, but also they should treat you with love while out in public. My husband and I have been married for 25 years and he still treats me like a queen. It does not matter what others think only what the two of us think and maybe because I am comfortable and confident in my relationship I can outwardly state I love the show and I have been watching it for years. I can not wait to try the recipe I learned just this morning.

The Neely’s are on FN because when Jamie and Bobby Deen were doing Road Tasting (or whatever that show was called), they went to the Neely’s BBQ place, then the Neely’s were guests on Paula’s Party. And the rest is history.
I wish the Neelys’ show WAS history. The “spice fairy” thing grates on my nerves! Pat constantly calling Gina “Mama” all the time is just plain creepy. I almost always watch FN on the weekends, but during their show I switch to the Weather Channel.

Strange English dude with a greenhorn chef wanting to root thru your fridge and andmake dinner with what they find. Yeah totally believable.Gordon Elliot was pretty crap from Day one. He also had a daytime talk show that lasted I think about 11 episodes.

The Neely’s need a little class. Gina is loud and annoying and definitely not funny. She’s way to old to be throwing her hips at her guests. Whatever… yeah, the sugar baby stuff was a little heavy when the show started but I think they are finding a better balance. Gina is beautiful, Pat’s ‘old man’ laugh is hilarious and its great to see a couple working together and enjoying themselves.

I’m not a racist. I’m an intelligent person with a good sense of humor. There’s a great contrast between entertaining with humor and acting like a buffoon. The Neely’s (especially Gina) are way over the top with the tomfoolery. There’s nothing more adorable than seeing a husband/wife cooking team bantering with one another but she’s downright rude and disrespectful.

I was watching the Neely’s chefography and someone made a statement during the process of hiring the Neely’s for FN said, “you never know what’s going to come out of her mouth”, referring to Gina. Where I’m from that’s not a compliment. It means one lack finesse and intellect. Gina can take a lesson from B. Smith. Now, she’s a classy veteran in the business. I’m from the South as well (well, sort of, Dallas) and married people do NOT act that way unless there is something wrong with their marriage. I have an M.B.A., not a psychology degree, but on the other hand I have been around 40 something years, been married for 15 of those and also (like the Neelys) have 3 kids, so allow me to play armchair quarterback on these two: Gina Neely: Overcompensating personality who finds that the best place to hide is in plain sight…by acting so “large and in charge” she gives off the air of authority who she so desparately desires yet so desparately lacks. Pat Neely: Keen inisght into his wife’s personality flaws allows him to show empathic behavior by building her up and supplying the yin to her yang so that things go smoother. Also, judging by his pussy-whipped attitude towards her, I would guess that he is absolutely getting some “sugah” on the side and Miss Thang is none the wiser since hubby is so seemingly magnificently trained.

On Aug 23 I wrote about the Neelys and their love and goals and haters, and I ponder to myself why people waste their time watching something or someone they don’t care for or like.
Under mines is someone in which is lacking something from where they are from, because where I’m from if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all or if you don’t like it then don’t partake in it. Now the person I can’t recall the name (“hater” but I must admit not as much as others) says their intelligent person with a good sense of humor and partake in watching the Neelys show and the chefography. They must have looked at the show enough to comment about them a few times on this site. I think their show is 30 mins maybe an hour and the chefography was an hour maybe 2 hours long. I don’t know if that’s finesse or just plan ole intellect of that person to watch; but the last time I checked being an advocate to foolish behavior is only adored by the ignorant. So why sit back and adore a show for 30mins much less an hour that you don’t like? That seems like an ignorant thing to do.
To me all the haters adore the show and that’s why they watch it. If I’m not mistaken if you don’t watch the show then the ratings go down and if you do watch the show, (in which most of our haters do) then the ratings go up….I don’t know if the haters know that, but it seems that they adore the show in which one would say your “ignorant”. Why watch something that you don’t like? You set back and put money in their pockets while all you can do is type. Now that’s foolishness.
And PS I don’t even watch the Neelys cause I now better to look at something I don’t care for. I looked at the chefography as a learning experience to find out how they got a show. I like them I just don’t care for the show.

I saw an episode called “Girl Power” today, where Pat and Gina were in the kitchen making Shrimp Creole, Dirty Rice, Stewed Tomatoes and Okra and Hurricanes. Food looked good, but what goes on in the kitchen is distracting.
I wanted to like the show when it came out, it was advertised as a sweet southern family with good and easy recipes with a great dynamic. What I see is clearly forced. I dunno whose recipes the Neely’s use, but Gina is dictating. Watch closely–Pat chops and BBQ’s, while she does–everything else. She talks most the time and has to add her 10 cents into everything Pat contributes. She has annoyed me in the past, but you can’t love everyone, so I let it go until THIS episode.
Pat helped her the whole time in the kitchen. He was the only one that made me laugh at all; he has all the true charisma, hers seems more forced. But what really bothered me was when she sat down with her “sista-friends”, he went in to toast with them–over the food HE helped make, with the drink HE made in his hand–and Gina pushed his glass away with her fork and said the toast was just for the sista girls. I can only imagine how it would have been received if he did that same thing to her with his brotha friends.
I really like him and want to watch the show because it seems he really tries, but she makes it really difficult to watch. I don’t see them at home but–I can only imagine what it’s like when the cameras are off, and I feel badly for him. :(

Yea, the antics sometimes d go a little far but its a good show. Yes, her voice can be annoying but she appears happy. Sometimes Pat appears to be a little boozed up but he is very respectful to his wife. The sexual references do need to stop not necessary. I look forward to seeing what they produce. WOW, I have never heard such negative comments about a couple that is so family oriented. To hear some of you talk Gina might as well have on nothing but a thong and a stripper’s pole as a prop. If you are that turned off by their sexual innuendos or insinuations you must not watch TV except for the 700 Club. You hear more sex on the prime time cartoons than the Neelys. The repeated comments about lack of class floor me. Are you saying that they have to act the way you want them to? As far as I know they haven’t been arrested, indicted or convicted of any crimes except being themselves.
I really love Pat and Gina they are my favorite on the net work beside Big Daddy I really love seeing them sharing there love for food and each other. I love that we are seeing real love on tv.I watch daily and Im happy to watch this loving couple on tv.
It is really surprising to see just how many people who dont have the same chances in life that others do can show there ugly side and hate on those that are given a chance in life to do what they like to do. I was also told if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all.I watch the show to get ideas on how to fix food in different ways. The Neelys seem to work well on the show and if Gina seems to go overboard a little bit then so be it. If the network didn’t like it there wouldn’t be a show. And if you watch like I do there seems to be alot of repeats. So how about lets see some more new stuff. And for the haters Lets see you get on tv and make a go of it.

Pat & Gina seem like nice people but that show is terrible. I can only last about five minutes with Gina’s grating voice and Pat and his Y’all after EVERY sentence. I acknowledge that you and your mom enjoy the show–how wonderful for y’all–but there are a shitload of us who can’t stand them, myself included.
I watch FN because I am interested in COOKING. If I want to watch a moronic married couple getting it on, I’ll purchase a membership at my local swinger’s club.

I was online searching for a recipe that was done on the FN channel by The Neely’s and stumbled onto this site. I couldn’t believe that in 2010, so many people could be so negative, ignorant, and racist. Violence and abuse in families bring races together in a negative way, but cooking shows like the Neely’s, Paula Deen, Giada, Rachel Ray, Sandra Lee, etc should help us celebrate and embrace our differences
If you look for negativity, it can be found on each show mentioned above. The great thing about tv is, you can always change the channel. Some complained about the lovey dovey, sooooo, they are happy.Do you wish it was you. Paula kisses on Michael, Rachel and Giada smooch their hubbies too. Many of you same womem complaining are sitting watching lifetime saying men are dogs or unhappy in your relationship. Those who complain about Gina looks are probably the same ones who always talking about being a beautiful women no matter your outward appearance, it’s all about your heart or you have low self esteem. Let’s be real people, races and cultures are different. Not just black or white, but northern vs southern. You may not understand or like the Neelys show, so don’t watch and leave your comments about the recipes. Because I thought this site used the word humor. There’s nothing funny about some of these comments. I know my comments are all over the place, but I was upset over several of the comments. I love FN, I’m African-American, and love the variety the channel provides. If a show comes on I’m not interested in I turn, on a bad day I don’t like watching Rachel Ray cheery show, but 2 hrs later I’m watching her again. Let’s tolerate one another, change the station, and smile … lol
I think Pat and Gina will continue to grow on their show.They are hard working individuals who have paid their dues. It’s wonderful to see an African American couple express affection, when we have been displayed with so much negativity and disgrace. Check out the media concerning African Americans (past and present). They are successful in business, give back to their community and appear to have produced intelligent and beautiful daughters. They perform their task on the show with ease and work great as a team to provide delicious meals. Their positive attributes overcome the negative. Pat and Gina congratulations. The best for you is yet to come.
I just love their show “Down home with the Neely’s” and their whole attitude towards each other. They are loving people you can tell and it’s not just on camera. Yes you can fake it but realness outshines fake any day. And we ALL have some old pics that others may deem as “not so hot” so don’t talk about folks because it’s just downright silly. Anywho, I won’t waste no more time on that…. I don’t think they should drop Gina because she’s the one that keeps me watching, regardless of their good looks, you have to be able to connect with the audience and they are doing just that! So look at their ratings then post! Go Neely’s and if the bro’s want to get their own show too then so be it!
I watch the Neeley’s show because they are African American. I really cannot stand Gina. Her voice is very aggravating, and she talks too much. She is bossy and she makes Pat act like a wimp. I adore him, but he need to stop looking at her with those eyes begging, please like me. I don’t believe that Pat’s family likes Gina any more than most other people. I have never seen so much negativity about one person, since Sarah Palin.
Why watch a show just because they’re African American? It’s a T.V. show…change the channel, watch something else.

Awww! These guys are awesome. Great chemistry. Gina’s just a firey gal and they seem to get on great together and really care about each other. Their recipes are always good, too. My husband and I love to entertain and usually do a Neely’s dish and something of Ina’s for friends. Always well-received.

There’s just a bit too much “yuck yuck” in their delivery…bordering on shucking and jiving. I find it a tad annoying. They are definitely NOT chefs, but neither is Paula Deen, Sunny Anderson or Rachel Ray.

I do like (and have used) some of the Neelys’ recipes, but like some other commenters, I often find them to be a bit annoying on their show. He says “y’all” way too much (for me). We know who he’s talking to!! Maybe it’s just a personal thing, but will someone please tell Pat that the word is ‘paprika’, not ‘pepperrika’? And while you’re at it, please tell Gina that the ingredient is ‘poultry seasoning’, not ‘poetry seasoning’. (Sometiimes, I swear, I don’t know what the h*ll they’re talking about!!)
I really do like some of their recipes, and I’ll continue to use them. I’m just glad they’re available online…

i think im about to cry. YALL are so cruel. being married is a joy, pat and gina is showing america how cooking in a family household is suppose to be. it should be playful, energetic, and sexy and thats what they bring to the show. sometimes i think the show should be rated pg-13 but thats how married couples should be, i mean thats how my husband and i are. cooking should be something you love to do. so why not do it with the one you love.
For those of you complaining about the way they talk, Y’ALL must be some damn Yankee pricks cuz that’s the way almost everyone talks south of the Mason Dixon Line!!! If you have a problem with how they act or cook then don’t watch!! I really don’t understand what is “wrong” with this picture. I really enjoy most of this site and I think it is funny, but sometimes the humor or comments come off as really mean-spirited.
I don’t have a problem with regional dialects – Emeril and Paula Deen, both have dialects and I’m sure Paula says ‘y’all’ just as much as Gina… That said, the problem I have with Gina is that she is extremely loud, crude, and classless. She seems to be an embarrassment to her husband, Pat. I’m sure that when they were younger, her antics were “cute”, but now that they are older and in a professional setting – her behavior is tacky and “ghetto”.

Yes Pat and Gina are a little goofy but thats what i love about the show and them for that matter! They are being themselves unscripted and just going for it and it works for them! I love the show!! My problem is that they are showing their love for one another on national TV and black people are actually upset about this? Black love is a beautiful thing . I guess if she had her ex-husband coming on the show and she disappear for a few minutes and came back sweating and cussing Pat out and drinking wine coolers it would be ok huh? Or if Pat was calling her a bitch or a hoe would that make it better? How about he wear a bandana and drink a 40! Come on people we should be supporting them. They are the only black couple on the food network and all we can do is tear them down. We should celebrate our black people who have some sense and self respect and love for family.

I still watch their show sometimes.. and I do think they are SO weird, but as someone below me commented, it works for them! They seem happy! I love Pat and Gina, I love the way they show affection to each other, their cooking. They are genuine people, I love their corny humor the way they carry on with each other and their family. They and Paula Dean are so genuine. I feel like the t.v auidence is part of the family. I hope they go on forever. If you don’t like them don’t watch them, let us enjoy them.
