Bob Tuschman Insults The Next Food Network Star Contestants
Posted on May 18th 2009 by Jillian Madison

Bob Tuschman, vice president of programming at the Food Network, is clearly a busy man. But luckily for us, he found the time to blatantly insult and/or throw bitchy backhanded compliments at the Next Food Network Star contestants via his official Food Network blog.

(Hey, wait a minute! That’s kind of what we do here! I hope Lisa Krueger does her job and prevents him from talking to the talent!)

In a 2-part series he called “Handicapping the Final Five,” Bob shared his notes from the final auditions and gave us his thoughts on each contestant. Here are some of his more colorful remarks:

Bob Says: “She reminds me of Margaret Cho.” Why?! Because she’s Asian?! I bet poor Debbie is tired of being compared to Margaret Cho based on race alone. Margaret is funny, but she’s also loud, raunchy and explicit. Debbie is not.
Bob Says: “Scattered, tough, bitchy, too over the top.” Then why did you pick him? Those are four of the most undesirable traits for TV personalities to possess (I’m looking at you, Guy Fieri).
Bob Says: “Not TV-ready, odd duck.” Coincidentally, those are the exact words I’d use to characterize Noah Starr. Did Bob Tuschman get his interview tapes mixed up?
Bob Says: “Newscaster voice (not a compliment, I mean flat, nasal, fake).” Ouch. But here’s the irony: has Bob ever listened to his own voice? He also said she was the best cook, but it’s not like that will matter on this network.
Bob Says: “Her eyes pop (not a compliment) on camera.” Then she and Gina Neely should get along just fine.

You can read more on Bob’s Blog.

  1. Teague says:

So…basically he thinks they’re as lame as we will eventually conclude ourselves once the show has started.

  2. Heather says:

If these are the 10 best contestants, I’d hate to see the rest of the bunch that didn’t make it.

I’m really disturbed by Bob’s comment that debbie reminds him of Margaret Cho. Does anyone else find that borderline racist??? He never would have said Jamika reminded him of Sunny Anderson. Or Michael reminded him of Elton John.

  3. dan says:

LOL @ Bob Tuschman’s voice. My girlfriend calls him the nasal whiner every time he opens his mouth on Next Food Network Star.

  4. Byrdie says:

It’s MONDAY, for goodness sake. Why is Bob trying to confuse me this early in the week?? If he thinks they are all morons, what is the point of another lame-o-rama cooking drama?? I have to go lie down now.

  5. jenna says:

Katie does not have a shot. She is way too preachy and does strictly healthy stuff. No one wants to watch people whipping fake egg whites. Just look at Ellie Krieger’s awful time slot and awful ratings.

  6. Alex says:

I agree, Byrdie. I just read his assessment of these 10 assclowns and it sounds like he hates them all. So why were they chosen? Why have bad things to say about the contestants before the show even airs? That’s OUR job :)

FNH, good call about Bob Tuschman just doing what we are all doing here. What double standards they have over at the Food Network.

  7. Ex NFNS Contestant says:

…it’s 100x worse that Tuschman is publicly demeaning contestants that he chose himself. Why tear down your own contestants based on things they can’t control, like the sound of their voice or their buggy eyes? If you took issue with someone’s physical features or traits, Bob, you never should have chosen them to go on the show to begin with.

  8. Lauren says:

FAKE VOICE ????? Has he taken anytime to listen to Paula Deen ???????????????????????????????????

  9. Lana says:

    My Opinion:

“Contestants” is a misnomer. They aren’t really competing in a contest – they’re participants in a TV show – a show that is choreographed from soup to nuts with one goal in mind: maximize drama = maximize viewership = maximize ratings.

Choosing controversial participants is key, and choosing participants who the audience will dismiss as ‘unworthy’ is also key. We all want the (ahem) “right person” to (ahem) “win.”

Bob’s pointing out the potential ‘unworthiness’ now, so we won’t be surprised later. And we’ll all feel so smart cuz we learned of it from Bob’s Blog first. Brilliant! Bob ain’t so dumb, y’all. *smiles*

  10. Lily says:

Tuschman is probably the biggest asswipe working in television today. He has almost singlehandedly fucked this network up to point where a comeback is going to be very very difficult.

He is a two faced dishonest weasel. Good qualities uh ?

  11. Kittykitty says:

Of all the comments, I find it interesting he has next to nothing to say about their ability to actually COOK.

  12. Judith says:

It is my understanding that tusch means bottom as in I’m going to spank your bottom, now if I’m correct doesn’t that make him Bob Bottomman ?

  13. Dani says:

It may be very immature of me, but I laughed so much at Bob’s comment about Eddie Gilbert when it said he was “Cocky” and “a little hard.” I wonder if he’ll have a shot at being the big weiner– er, winner.

  14. MamaR says:

I simply don’t understand this man. If there are so many problems with the contestants, why even have them participate? Three of the guys I am already confusing because they look so much alike. The young gal already annoys me with her being so “Perky” and it is obvious that the “gay” contestant will be on the outs..(too bad, I think he is the only one so far that has any personality!)

  15. Automne says:

You didn’t finish Bob’s comments on Michael, “Scattered, tough, bitchy, too over the top, but oh my God this drama queen in drag is going to make our ratings explode!”

  16. Lily says:

I think Tuschman prefers to be on top when he is doing Brian Boitano.

  17. Kitty says:

I sort of want Michael to win simply for the opportunity to see him bitch-slap Gina Neely over a Christmas ham. FoodNetwork should sell that episode on Pay-er-View.

  18. Kitty says:

    *Pay-per-view; I fail at getting they keys on this laptop replaced. ;____;

  19. Teague says:

    Kitty-I’d pay for that!

  20. Lily White Arse says:

Me no like Bob Tuschman. He ebo man, and scarcastic too! They should hire some jerk-off, know-it-all, Simon Cowell wannabe to run the TFN. Any ideas, uh ?

  21. Donald says:

Gordon Ramsey . He’d get rid of Paula Deen and her family .

  22. Jake says:

Man I wish my site was as good as this one. Maybe if I develop my sense of humor I can attract more visitors.

I need the Google ad money because dayjob only pays 32K at the art gallery.

I am envious of anyone who shows originality.

  23. Jillian Madison says:

@Jake, if you need to make extra money, your chances of doing that with google ads are slim to none. We get pennies from Google Ads. The money we earn there doesn’t even cover the monthly hosting fees to maintain the site! Good luck!

  24. Spenny says:

To be fair, you are really taking these comments out of context. Bob’s blog posts state both pros and cons, and they are written for all of the finalists. In particular, regarding Debbie, his entire text reads:

Debbie Lee, 39, a restaurant consultant from West Hollywood, Calif.
Good: Warm, bright, hearty laugh, fun Ina-voice
    Bad: Culinary mis-statements, marketing speak
Food: Excellent! Curry pork with red wine, prosciutto cream sauce
Quick Take: She reminds me of Margaret Cho – funny, gutsy, warm. But she delivered some culinary information that was just wrong. Can she convince me she has the depth of culinary knowledge and technique to survive at the top of the food world?

  25. Liz says:

Really what is the hangup they have about Debbie being Korean? How many times have we heard that Rachel Ray is Italian and a soda jerk and grew up in the Mountains..but still imo is a bad cook at best. I think the show needs somebody like Debbie but obviously they want Jamika who has cooked nothing memorable or outstanding.

  26. Bob Is Gay says:

Bob Tuschman reminds me of a gay man who just came back to the office after receiving a very bad crack-n-sack wax during lunch.
