Giada Obsesses Over Basil, But Not Apostrophes

PHOTO’S? Oh dear. Why do so many people think you have to add an apostrophe before the S to pluralize a noun? It’s okay, Giada. Mistake happen. At least you have nice boob’s to fall back on.

I just cooked some delicious muffin’s! I’m going to bring them to all my friend’s stuck in their cubicle’s tomorrow!

    Nice Boob’s indeed!!!

Far be it from me to defend a Food Network personality (apart from Alton Brown, Mario Batali or Morimoto), but she may be correct. Photo is a contraction of photograph, but is widely accepted to be a valid and complete word. If she’s using the apostrophe to shorten “photograph”, then she is justified. Wow, I feel dirty. At least I wasn’t defending Mr. Ferry.

JohnMC, it’s ok. Take a shower, scrub well, have a nice nap and you’ll feel better soon. ;)

Can someone explain the use of so many …’s instead of a semicolon or period? hmmm?

Since her first statement is a subordinate clause, a comma would have been the correct punctuation. The last statement could have stood alone as a sentence. The ….s express that she is expressing her thoughts in a less formal manner.

The correct form of the plural for “photo” would be “photoes”, following the rule that words that end with a vowel are made plural by adding -es. It looks funny, though, and by just adding the “s” would have been better so people wouldn’t think that she was using an ’s as a possessive.

I agree with John that the apostrophe could of been used to replace missing letters. At least she spelled “craziness” right; many people forget to drop the “y” and add the “i” before adding the suffix.

it’s “could HAVE been used”, not “could OF been used”.

Not like it’s the biggest deal in the world, but Giada was totally incorrect in her usage of the apostrophe.

It is only appropriate to write PHOTO’S if you are making the word possessive and are following it with another noun (example: I just erased my photo’s edges.)

People are over-thinking her use of the language. Somehow I very much doubt she’s that deep.

Secondly some flunky more than likely wrote the thing. Giada doesn’t get her hands ‘dirty’. Day to day dealings with the common folks is not our pampered princes style.

Funny — Giada fell into the Grocer’s Apostrophe trap (Orange’s $1.00) but spelled and used it’s correctly (not its). So on balance a zero!

As an editor I can tell you it’s incorrect. It’s also a very common mistake, and I’m willing to cut her some slack. BTW, Grammar Police – the phrase is “could have,” not “could of” – also a common mistake.

Her boobs’ affinity for her is based on of her boob’s pulchritude, not her grammar skills.

The first part is a fragment; she just needed to add a subject to make it a correct sentence. I think not-too-smart or just lazy people rely on ellipses so they don’t have to worry about proper punctuation.
“Photoes” is absolutely not a word, grammar police. Check the OED. “Could of” is also painfully wrong, so your name makes me chuckle.

I love the fact that she has 17,000+ followers, and is following ZERO people- what a self-centered biotch! Doesn’t she know she should at least add a few in there to make it LOOK like she cares about other people’s lives?!
