Want to know something REALLY embarrassing? In sixth grade, I misspelled the word "HAM". It wasn't that I didn't know how to spell it (as if!); it was that I was so relieved they gave me an easy word that I spoke too fast and mixed the letters up. After I misspelled the word I immediately said "Can I say that again?" They shook their heads sadly and said, "No, I'm sorry." I felt so terrible; I had let everybody down.

But in tenth grade, I won the National Spelling Bee--spelling words very slowly and carefully.

I have 7-year-old twins diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. They were diagnosed at ages 3 and 4, so we've been living with this for a few years and I know a fair bit about it. It is my understanding that the vast majority of children who have this disorder fall into the high intelligence range; in fact, my child who has the ADHD diagnosis has been evaluated by several people as a genius (which sometimes gives me the heebie-jeebies; how do you raise a child who's smarter than you are?) and her sister is highly intelligent as well, although not genius-level. So I don't think stupidity can be explained by his childhood diagnosis. However, I ALSO don't think stupidity is behind his writing. Undoubtedly, he writes really, REALLY poorly--he knows what he wants to say, but hasn't taken the time to learn to spell. He should know by now that this is a weak area for him and use spell-check or a dictionary. I doubt he's dumb; sounds like he's just lazy and impulsive--classic ADD/HD.

I am not Jacob. I’m just someone who enjoys calling out and mocking a particularly vicious, unfunny troll who goes by the name of Alec Smart, or Kyle, or J Strauss, or whatever the hell other alias he can conjure up to conceal his pitiful identity. His unique syntax, punctuation and mean-spirited comments make him easy to identify.

I’m a fan of Jacob’s blog as I am of this blog. This doesn’t mean I fawn over every post – I read what I like, and ignore what doesn’t interest me. Blogging isn’t a zero-sum game. No one loses if someone discovers and visits a new blog. There’s plenty of room for creative people to express themselves, and for interested people to appreciate their work.

As Jillian indicated, bloggers don’t do what they do for the money. Commenters like Alec should respect the tenor of a blog set by its creator, and not interject the unsavory aspects of his personality where it is not appropriate. I’ve got no problem with sarcasm or good-natured ribbing. Alec’s hateful rhetoric and spiteful personal insults too often cross commonly recognized lines of propriety. I will mock him wherever I find him, until he develops a modicum of humility.

@K-Lye - I just want you to know that I caught the humor and sarcasm/irony in your comment. "Everyone" seemingly takes this line of blogs a little too/two/tutu seriously.

@Everyone - GET IT? GOT IT? GOOD!!

Yes, of course we all make typos occasionally. I did it myself today with the word SHOO IN, as Tatiana so graciously pointed out! But to me, a typo isn't the same thing as confusing their/there or too/two. One is a silly mistake made by someone who really knows better. The other is an inherent misunderstanding about words/grammar, made by someone who inherently has no clue.

Admittedly, maybe it's just me being hypersensitive to Tyler's mistake. Secret: I have some history with the words PATIENCE and PATIENTS.

I was a finalist in a spelling bee when I was in 3rd grade. My whole family was there. It was huge. I was proud!

Anyway, I was given the word PATIENCE. And you know what? I had absolutely no clue how to spell it. I was throwing S's and H's in there like it was my job. Ultimately, I couldn't spell the word, and I was eliminated. I ran to the bathroom and cried!

Now, it's over 20 years later, and I still cringe every time I see that damn word. Patience. Patients.

But here's the thing: I was given that word in a THIRD GRADE spelling bee. Tyler Florence is pushing 40, and still can't spell it. Is there an excuse for that? Why is ignorance somehow tolerated and forgivable and overlooked so easily in our society?
