FNH Review: What Would Brian Boitano Make
![]() |

When I think of Brian Boitano, I don’t think of tasty libations or creative new recipes. I think of poofy shirts, embellished leotards, and toe loops. So, after catching today’s series premiere, it made sense that What Would Brian Boitano Make didn’t really turn out to be a show about cooking as much as a show about Brian’s personal life and his relationships with his friends.
Considering the format of the show, there’s been a lot of whispering about Brian’s sexuality. However, the Food Network publicists (and/or Brian himself) seem to have an issue with the media talking about it. The editor of the popular gay news website After Elton tried to interview Brian, but was told “the show was strictly about the cooking and was going to keep its focus on that, and not on Brian’s personal life.” Really? That’s a bit ironic, considering Brian not a professional cook, and the show takes place in his San Francisco home and features his friends (including his best friend, to boot).
Regardless of Brian’s sexuality, What Would Brian Boitano Make is definitely the gayest television show ever created. Today’s premiere episode opened with Brian riding a bike with a gigantic rainbow graphic behind him. He took several dance breaks, during which he showcase his “left over from 1992″ dance moves, before he ultimately went on to prepare a menu of hors d’oeuvres made with NUTS, BALLS, and SAUSAGES. Mmm! Subtly!

Overall, What Would Brian Boitano Make gets an official FNH rating of “eh.” It’s unlike anything currently on the Food Network, which is a pro, but it’s campy and not really about food, which is a con (considering it’s on the FOOD NETWORK). Brian is one of those people with a personality you’ll either love… or loathe. We actually found him endearing in a few segments, though we could have done without the cheesy VH1-esque cut scenes and multiple up-close shots of his hairline (yikes – are those hair plugs?)
We have some more photos and a quick highlight video from the episode after the jump! And don’t forget to let us know what you thought of the show in the comments section.

THIS WEEK: Another tailgating weekend! Alex G's onion rings, an awful slow cooker experience, Ina & Jeffrey Garten's lame steak throwdown, Jennifer Hudson's annoying Weight Watchers commercial, Restaurant Impossible's cheap makeovers, and more.

I found his nuttiness kind of refreshing and entertaining. It’s worth 30 minutes out of my week.
I loved the show. I thought it was genuinely funny, and all the food looked delicious and simple enough for me to make. A+
I personally liked the show, but question its place on Food Network. This show is definitely only marginally about food. As an acquaintance of Brian and a gay male, traveling in the same circles as Brian, I can confirm that Brian is quite gay and that is not news in SF gay scene. He also wears a “hair system” that actually looks better in person than on air.
I loved that he used a “slap chop” to chop his veggies in one segment, and asked his “assistant” to chop his nuts in another segment. That was the funniest gayest scene, other than his dancing, exaggerated mannerisms, and his love for rainbows :) Also loved his custom swizzle sticks in the “Martoni’s.”
I watched a couple of minutes live, and ended up TiVo’ing it for later.
He was rather a goofball, which was fun and I thought worked for what little I saw. His menu was a crack up though.
I did see the credits where he cracked up and I thought it came across two million times more human then 90% of the “hosts” FN currently has.
and 10 million times more human then any and all of Guy Ferry’s contrived laughs, but I guess one has to do, what one has to do to sell tacky knife sets…
Honestly, I did not like the show at all. He’s so damn goofy. I just wanna punch him! But I just changed the channel instead.
I see that punch and raise you a punch to his throat so he never utters, “OMG” again.
I loved it. He’s a million times more watchable than Melissa. It looked like he was having fun with the format and it’s nice to see a new Food Network show where there isn’t some made up rolling tally of ingredient costs. Do I expect to learn a lot? Not really but I think I’ll definitely be entertained.
Okay, I admit. I loved it. Sigh. And there I was, ready to spew forth my biting sarcastic comments; and then type up my dark and twisted message on the complete demise of the Food Network as we know it. Sigh. Not today. I loved it. I thought the premise was entertaining and original (did I really just say that about the Food Network?). Brian was clever, endearing, hilarious and oh, so very, very gay (not that there’s anything wrong with it.) I really did enjoy all 30 minutes. So sue me. But hell, it’s so much better than Big Daddy, Sunny, Melissa and/or Sandy, right?
I agree that Brian is far more watchable than Melissa – she’s getting worse, not better – does anyone else think that they’re actually reshooting some of her stuff? – today they said what each ingredient cost to prove it was $10 total for 4 people.
But, I digress… back to Brian. I think he’s adorable. He’s totally not taking this seriously, which is the ONLY way to approach it – he knows he’s not a chef – he’s a celebrity (sort of) who’s having fun with food instead of a cook/chef who’s been turned into a celebrity because FN says so.
I watched this show out of curiosity and ended up liking it to my great surprise. Brian seems to be having fun and the food looked interesting, which is a lot more than I can say for many shows on FN any more.
Since there was nothing else on, I watched it, and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. He’s not a chef, but I’d still rather watch it than Guy Ferry, Aunt Sandy, the Neelys, Rachel Ray, Melissa, or Booby Flay. There really aren’t many people on FN that I do like watching these days. All in all, I thought it was fun, but I don’t think I’d love a marathon of it. It might be just a bit too much.
Being gay is good thing (IMHO) and I love that Food Network has allowed Brian to express himself with little censorship. They, or he, do not have to overtly dwell on his sexuality, as it is quite obvious, and it is fun to see how they are cleverly outing him in a positive and fun way.
I give this show an A+ for being original and fun, although Brian is far from an authority on cuisine or cooking. I also question the tie-in with South Park, but apparently Brian is proud of this association, or else he would have never allowed it to be so prominently featured. He has certainly taken the bit, which is supposed to be insulting in a back-handed way, and made it his own personal anthem for positive change.
Also I agree this show is FAR FAR BETTER than Guy Fieri, Melissa, Aunt Sandy, Sonny, etc… but time will tell – lets see how this show evolves.
way to go Brian!! Thoroughly entertaining! Finally a host who is watchable, seems honest and is comfortable on the screen. Yeah, he’s campy- but isn’t that a refreshing break from the contrived hamminess poured on extra thick by the rest of the bozo-parade that is now Food Network?!
@Wisconsin_Walker
Did you notice how she made it a point that all that chicken was only $5…. uh ok, maybe on sale (which she delved into earlier in the show) and in bulk (another thing she mentioned I believe)
I mean, can they add any more asterisks to the title of her show?
Ten Dollar Meals* with Melissa D’Arabian
*when you buy on sale
*and in bulk
*and your family has the same meat all week?
*and during a full moon
*and did I mention I had this meal in Paris?
This seems to follow an “Ina” format. With her love for the gays we should be seeing her do a cameo soon. I found myself being annoyed yet hooked on this show – much like my love/hate relationship with Rachel Ray. I’ll Tivo it and give it a few more tries before I make my final decision.
I really REALLY enjoyed it. And I thought all the food items were actually very interesting. I could do without the Alton Brownish animated graphics, but all in all, as much as I hate to admit it, the Food Network did right with this one.
I will say that i need to see something more than easy to make appetizers, but I’ll definitely be watching each week.
Yup,count me in with those that liked Brian’s show. Had they gone the serious chef-serious show route we would have oh so much more to complain about. I like that it wasn’t one person talking to the camera like all the others!
So, maybe Noah Starr will guest on Brian’s show in the future, hmmm? Maybe THAT’S where he went! Hahahaha
I liked it, and I look forward to seeing more.
It was a charming show thanks to the silliness–I mean, it’s much more refreshing to see someone who clearly doesn’t take himself too seriously still have a lot of fun with food. It was, incidentally, much better than Melissa’s show which led into it–I’m convinced that it was the first show she taped, hence how awkward she was.
WWBBM isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly a big step in the right direction.
Honestly anything following Melissa on t.v. is good (w/ the exception of Big Daddy)
But he was fun and engaging and wayyy more comfortable on t.v than Melissa and her creepy smiles/eyes and obvious nervous arm motions. That’s a real train wreck. However I have to agree, you’ll either love or hate him.
I only caught the tail end of the show, but yes. I liked what I saw and am not surprised readers here liked it too. Food Network Humor? Oh yes, the show was humorous, and Brian was silly and gay – and I mean gay in the old sense of the word. He was having fun! And it translated well on screen.
The show does seem more entertainment-oriented than food-oriented. I did NOT jump right to my computer to download the recipes. But as far as food goes, the dishes looked tasty, and I think he did an adequate job of explaining and teaching.
Yes. Guy, Melissa, the Neelys, Sandy and certainly Big Daddy can all take a lesson from Brian on how to relax, have a good time, and just freakin’ cook, FCOL!
@Martin, send Brian our regards! lol
I laughed all the way through with Brian. He seemed waayyy comfortable with food and I wanted to be at his party.
Any doubt about his sexuality? LOL Just watch the mini clips of running errands…in…wait for it….a red sequin Elvis-style jumpsuit skating costume — I almost wet my pants!
Go Brian!
His show was hilarious! I’ll be tuning in for the laughs each week.
I wish they had blogs on foodnetwork.com it would be interesting to see comments from from their “core audience.”
He made me want to buy a Slap-Chop. He’s just that good. If he had quoted the infomercial or did a Vince impression I’d have fallen off the couch laughing. You’d never see Tyler Florence or Bobby Flay pull the sticks out of their asses long enough to relax enough to use something as corny as a Slap-Chop.
I liked it a lot, too. Jillian’s right, although it’s in the “Barefoot Contessa” mold, the show is unlike anything else airing right now on FN, thus I fear it is doomed. I don’t know if this is an FN-owned show or if it comes from an outside producer; they’re really not interested in hosts they can’t force into three other shows, sell cookbooks, etc.
Is that–an actual screencap from the episode? Dx
Anyone with any doubt about his sexuality needs only view those hilarious screencaps of him from the episode. Mystery solved!
I am literally shocked to see so many people on FNH liked this show. It is made up of everything you have all purported to hate, complete with a showy hosts who isn’t even a chef. This is the Food Network!!! If the show was on Bravo or E! it would be funny (10 years ago when it was relevant) but now? It’s just tired.
Brian’s schtick is older than his 20 year old Olympic gold medals.
I tend to agree with the commenter above me, Sam-I-Am-Not. This show, while it was admittedly mildly entertaining, has zero place on the Food Network. They’re still trying too hard to be something they’re not. What’s next? Bikini chef cookoffs? 7 chefs living together in a house to see what happens when they stop being polite and start getting real? PUH-LEEZ! I’m tired of this network dumbing things down for the idiots and Tyler Florence fans of the world.
I was all set to come on this site yesterday after watching the show to post that this was a train wreck, but now I’m not so sure. Some of what made me cringe, doesn’t make me cringe quite so much the day after. I’ll have to watch it again before I can decide if this is still bad.
Heaven knows there aren’t enough food competition shows on TV, so how about pitting Brian Boitano, Brian Orser, Sasha Cohen, Peggy Fleming (for the oldsters), Rudy Galindo and a token heterosexual male skater (if they can find one) in “Kitchen Battle of the Ice Stars” format?
Am I the only one who hated it?? Some of it was cute, but I felt like I was gonna have a seizure with all the back and forths…and I thought he was a little too enamored with his own jokes.
I’ll give it another shot…but not really expecting much…
I thought Brian was pretty funny and he is a hell a lot better than Melissa D’e whatever her name is. Because I watched some of her show and was thinking how in the hell did she win Next Food Network.
I saw the show while getting a pedicure and kept on thinking, why the Hell does Brian Boitano have a cooking show? I hated the way he leaned way into the camera to take a bite of the food he made. Eh! I couldn’t really hear the words but there were subtitles on the screen so what I read was enough for me. FN has really gone downhill. I guess the real chefs of the world are more interested in cooking in their own restaurants or at least I hope that’s the case.
@Lana. I will say hello from you and all the FNH fans, the next time I run into him, and I will try to get his reaction to all of this. I am a 28 yo resident physician and he is 45.. Even though we are both gay, live near each other and frequent the same neighborhood establishments, we never have very in depth conversations, mostly because of the age difference and the opposite nature of our respective professions. That being said, we do have some mutual friends in common and see each other from time to time.
Anyway, I still feel I liked his first show very much, but I think I agree with many of you that I want to see more before I form a definitive opinion. I must admit, I do like to laugh, hence I love this FNH website and naturally I like any show that makes me smile. At least Brian and FN has accomplished that.
I just wish Food Network would stop dreading up these people or having competitions to find the next food network personality and just hire some honest to goodness chefs so it can be about the food again. Whatever happened to Gale Gand, David Ruggerio and even the Two Fat Ladies were at least cooks. I am sick of these over the top “personalities” who know nothing about food or cooking. Take a hike Rachael.
thought the brian boitano show was TOTALLY rediculous!!! he is absolutely silly and so not a chef.
@Kitty – Yes. That was an actual screenshot. It was on right at the start of the program. Which is why I changed the channel too quickly to see him actually cook anything.
@Sam-I-Am-Not – I’m with you 100%. This is (WAS) FN. Not whatever the hell kind of channel this program needs.
I pvr’d Aunt(hic)(errrpp)Sandy, then Mommy Dearest, and finally Brian. Then went off to the movies yesterday (Inglorius Bastards ROCKS!!). So didn’t actually get to watch the shows until today.
Once again I tried to watch Aunt Drunky, and could only manage about two minutes (erase). Next up, Mommy Dearest. Four minutes in (you keep your frozen oj in the freezer? really??)…erase. What a horrible show. I can’t even attempt to watch it anymore.
Then, Brian’s new show. I was impressed. Emeril and Julia he’s not, but he was entertaining, goofy, funny, and seemed genuine. It’s a little hokey, but so what! So is Ina and the scenario’s they have her doing just to give her a reason to prepare food (like being on FN isn’t enough). So, I will watch again. But, buh bye forever to Aunt Vodka and Mommy Dearest. I need my sanity.
OT: I’ve now seen two episodes of Parisian Mommy Melissa d’Arabian’s show (the pilot and yesterday’s), and it is still “Thirty Dollar Lunches,” not $10 dinners. The comments about how awkward she is remain spot on; notice how often she had to go to meaningless filler words like “perfect”, “delicious”, and the time-honored Aunt Sandy fave “flavor” instead of actually describing the dishes she was making in any sort of substantive way.
The less said about her preposterous potato cooking technique, the better. If you don’t care about frying potatoes in oil, fry them in oil and make them crispy and lovely. If you want to steam them and/or roast them in the oven, do that. But for the love of god, why would you a) fry potatoes in oil for two minutes; b) deglaze the pan with water, thus eliminating the lovely crispiness that is the reason we fry in the first place; before c) throwing the whole thing in the oven with another 4T of butter?? Those little cubes are going to be the worst of all possible worlds, saturated with oil and then coated in more fat, and still not as tasty (or as healthy!) as a simple french fry.
Plus, did you notice how Mommy of the Year recommends cooking the chicken at 350 and the potatoes at 375? Sure, every Parisian debutante raised by a Mexican nanny has a double oven, but I kind of doubt that anyone in Mommy Melissa’s target demographic has a $100,000 kitchen but just $10 to spend on dinner for four.
I wept over those poor chicken breasts. The skin might be a little bit sticky when the sugar from that sickly-sweet honey-orange sauce carmelizes in the oven, but it isn’t going to be what anyone considers “crisp.” And really, chicken-a-l’orange? When was the last time Melissa went to Paris? 1974?
The salad was idiotic, unless you’re serving it to vegans accustomed to a raw diet. Both red cabbage and fennel are *very* crunchy and mostly unappetizing raw; the proper way to turn those into slaw is to slice the veggies very thin (Mommy of the Year surely has a mandoline stuffed away next to her double oven, no?) and let them quick pickle in the vinegar, and *then* add the mayo and seasonings. What she’s made isn’t a slaw; it’s more like what you’d get if you just threw everything from a half-eaten veggie tray into a bowl and mixed it together.
Finally, the accounting continues to be insane. Three chicken breasts are not dinner for four people, and three chicken breasts do not cost $5 even on sale. Honey is $9 a jar. Two potatoes are not a dollar. Fennel bulbs are typically $2-$3, and red cabbage can run you as much as $7 per head. And so on.
I understand that not everything FN airs is targeted at people who, you know, actually enjoy cooking. For example: I don’t watch or even particularly like Rachel Ray, but I can at least understand the harried-housewife-30-minute-meal show as a concept. But this abomination fails on every level. It doesn’t teach you time-saving shortcuts — both the protein and starch required at least *three* separate cooking techniques. It isn’t going to be particularly tasty; you’re getting sugary one-noted orange sauce, buttered semi-fried, semi-baked potatoes, and mostly-raw vegetables. It certainly isn’t healthy. And (despite the name) it isn’t really all that cheap!
I guess my question is: why would anyone watch Melissa d’Arabian when you could watch Rachel Ray instead?
What would Brian Boitano make?
.
.
.
He’d make a bad heterosexual… Zing!
For those of us who are long time ‘Tano fans, we all know of his love for cooking and the fact that he’d said he wanted to open a restaurant after he retired from skating way back in 1988..before he ever won olympic gold!
Perhaps you may think that my ‘Fantano-ness” circumvents my ability to judge this show, however, I am still going to comment.
I
LOL’ed several times during the broadcast. I never expected Brian to be so funny, so able to laugh at himself and so able to achieve the intimacy on camera while speaking that he has been able to do on ice. DVR is set for every episode!!
@Andrew – I truly loved your rationale and comments about the Melissa D’Arabian $10 Meals Show. In fact, I have already copied it, an emailed it to several friends. Thank you for taking the time to do such a wonderful posting. I thought almost everything you said was “spot on,” except that most supermarket Honey that I am familiar with is less than $9.00 a bottle. Otherwise, perfect!
I am shocked. I thought this was going to be a total waste of time, but alas, it was alright. Finally those FN knucklehead programming people put together a good show. And since it was the first one, I imagine it can only get better.
Before we start nominating that little turd Tuschman for an Emmy, hopefully he can redeem himself by ridding us of some of the other absolute garbage programs he has brought us.
Obviously the production company that produces Boitano’s show don’t drink the same Kool Aid as most of the others who give us such shit programs.
So there.Keep it real and don’t drink Bob T’s crap Kool Aid.
Got it?
i dont get it…there are alot of people posting here how amazing this show is. But if you look at some of the comments made by the same people in the past about the FN lineup they beg for “real” chefs and no more of these “overdone personalities”…
Why the change of heart now? B/c he’s a flamboyant celebrity with no culinary background?
” [...] What Would Brian Boitano Make didn’t really turn out to be a show about cooking as much as a show about Brian’s personal life and his relationships with his friends.”
Sounds to me like Food Network is trying to imitate Travel Channel’s “foodumentaries.” They must be kickin’ themselves, seeing how much more successful Bourdain is without them, and want to recreate the formula with their own TV personality!
The comments about this show are absolutely shocking and pretty much explain why The Food Network is in the sorry shape it is in today.
I can not BELIEVE all the positive comments about this show.
If I ran this web site I would close it down now in shame.
For me, this show is a winner. I loved his quirkiness, his ability to laugh at himself and his recipes looked easy and great tasting. I personally find this show the punch that FN needed amidst the many ho-hum and clone shows. Plus, any show that takes away some more time for Rachel Ray is a no-brainer in my book! I hope it continues. I am TiVo-ing this one!
@Mike.
I would argue because he is real.
He’s not trying to cram x dinner recipes into Y dollars.
He’s not a total fraud like Sandra (hic) Lee. If Brian spoke about cocktail time at the end of the show you know he would make fun of it and himself so that the audience is laughing with him instead of AT him.
He’s not assembling 70% store bought crap with 30% “homemade” in the mother of all cooking food frauds.
He’s likable to most, and even those that do not like him would prob. agree what you see is what you get with him, unlike most other Food Hosts.
It goes on, yeah its not a pure food show, but there is room for that, I mean if there was a FN Food news show, that would not be cooking, but it would still inform; just like he is about food in the abstract yet entertains, and his meals looked better then half the hosts on FN as well. (and he even made fun of the menu with tons of innuendo.)
Time will tell if he can continue, but as to your comments, he will never ONCE claim he is a chef, unlike Sandy (I spent 2 days at the Cordon Blue Canada and left) Lee does.
If asked if he is a Chef he would prob. laugh with us. And say something like “Are you kidding me? Hell no.”
There is an honesty shown so far in his show unlike most of the rest of FN, he almost mocks the very concept of FN _with_ us instead trying to be serious enough to sell knifes and smoked hams.
I think it is for those reasons and more that people here are responding in a positive manner despite his show not being a 100% food making tutorial and despite him not being a chef, but a food lover.
that’s my 2 cents anyway…
Boitano is a retired figure skater making appetizers and being as gay as a picnic basket. Flying around that kitchen, so animated, goofy arms and hands fluttering about.
I hated it, I loved it, I cringed, I told him right at the TV screen that he was ridiculous, and laughed my goddam head off.
It was a lovely change from the brilliant chefs like Paris D’Arabian, Aunt Sandy, The porno Neely’s, Big Ghetto Daddy, Ask Awkward Aida, that Orange haired woman that “Cooks for Real”, 5 Obnoxious ingredients, 30 pots and pans for RR 30 minute meals…
@DesignerJeans – Well said. I agree with your sentiments 100%. Thanks for your “2 cents.”
How can you NOT like a guy that pulls out the slap chopper and a spare human chopper in the same show??!?
@Designer Jeans and Luz … agree with both of you 100%!!
I tuned in expecting to hate it, but found myself really enjoying it. He’s campy, to be sure, but doesn’t make any outrageous claims about his food costing $10 or less.
Commenting on Melissa’s show yesterday … THREE chicken breasts for FOUR people??? Is she kidding??? Not in my house. I know her kids are young so she could get by with that now, if she had to, but just wait until she has teenagers and tries to get them to divide up a chicken breast.
Although I do have to admit the recipe sounded pretty good and one I might actually try someday … but I’ll splurge and allow one whole piece of chicken per person!!
@ Oh Come On … I went to the FN site and watched all the clips .. you were right … the one with Brian shopping wearing the red sequin suit – with his ice skates on no less – was priceless!!! The looks he got from people! Also the clip of him making the “Bake-CONE” with the spikey haired guy is hilarious! He’s obviously having fun with all of this and wants us to have fun along with him. I for one will be watching next week.
Wow. Given all the positive comments here, I guess I should give the show a try. I still have my doubts that I will like it, but the opinions here have swayed me to at least sample an episode or two.
I only saw the slap chop incident, which was quite funny if you ask me.
Why would it even matter if he is gay? I mean, it’s quite obvious enough. If the Food Network can handle Ina Garten’s friends, why can’t they be open about Brian Boitano? If ABC Family can takle it, then why can’t Food Network?
The show is stupid, either way.
He’s kinda cute. I might watch this. Maybe. Love the screencaps with the woman’s hand and caption. That is <3!
I think this show is an elaborate prank on YOU, FNH. How can you make fun of something so ridiculous to begin with?
The best part was the little old spanish grandma he asked to hook him up :3
I was away for three days and am playing catch-up at FNH. I had no internet access but was able to watch FN on Sunday. “Money Saving Meals” is absurd, “Ten Dollar Dinners” is worse. I was surprised that Brian Boitano’s show wasn’t as silly as I expected it to be, and parts of it were somewhat entertaining. I’m finished with the exercise of watching the Sunday FN line-up that has very little to offer viewers with half a brain.
“Why the change of heart now? B/c he’s a flamboyant celebrity with no culinary background?”
I think it’s because he’s not taking it seriously. And he’s new so he hasn’t been broken by the FN yet. I personally want a hybrid of great chef and endearing personality. I’m not into the FlayRay stuff where it’s so far gone the people have become products.
I agree – if he was taking this whole gig and/or himself seriously, it would be horrendous. Instead, it’s a parody of FN – not unlike this website.
…… am I going crazy, or was there, just a few hours ago, a FNH post about Ina and Brian Boitano?
I just got on again to find that the post is gone… how strange.
I deleted the post because one person found it offensive. We’re not looking to offend — we’re looking to have fun.
I felt entertained and laughed, laughed, laughed and laughed. It made my day, especially after Melissa’s crap. I heard that “Jeff” (who was in competition with Meli..gulp) has a show coming up but I can’t find any info on it. Does anyone know?
I will laugh every Sunday with Brian, as long as he is on.
Did not catch BOItano…I guess I’ll have to, but it seems like the likely home for this concept would have been Bravo ;)
@Martin – I did eat a table away from Boitano when Absinthe opened (well not day of but a couple of months after) in ’98. But given where we live, nobody cares what your proclivities are!
Also sounds like Melissa is sinking faster than a poorly made Parisian Souffle. Ouch.
FNH is about making fun of those who take themselves too seriously. Sounds like Brian didn’t. That’s why he gets a break.
Just a not to quell the ugly rumor that Brian Boitano, being gay, enjoys being sodomized with a trout from the walk-in cooler. Do the math, he may be gay but he doesn’t own or work at a restaurant hence no walk-in cooler. Besides, this rumor has been circulating long before Brian B. joined FN so it couldn’t have been him to begin with. The version being told on certain websites is that a certain talentless, over-rated Irish turd who everyone hates because he’s a cocky dick likes to get, well, dicked with la poisson, even going so far as to threaten to fire the poor, innocent Mexican dishwasher if he didn’t help with the heinous act. One thing’s for sure, I won’t be ordering the catch of the day at any of HIS restaurants (then again, I wouldn’t eat at any of HIS restaurants anyway, so moot point I guess).
I agree with all of you who were surprised at how much you loved the show. I did too! And, as someone mentioned, it’s because he does not take it seriously like the freak Sandra Lee does, it’s all about having fun, and I have to say that those cheese balls (ya, I said balls) rolled in nuts (yes, nuts) with sun dried tomatoes and basil looked beautiful. Is it “real cooking”? No, but much of the FN isn’t.
Thank god someone other than Alton has an actual sense of humor on this network!
I think this is my third favorite show on FN, after Good Eats and TNFS. Yay!
What would Brian Boitano make? My guess would be, hot dogs, sausage links, knockwurst……………..
Not that theirs anything wrong with that.
@Jillian, it’s all good. I thought the deleted post funny (in a somewhat sinister and naughty way), but can see how some may have found it offensive. Good on ya.
I really enjoyed it. Anytime FN isn’t showing that jackass Guy, I am happy!
I loved the show. He is cute, his house is adorable, and the hors d’oevres he made look scrumptious! Plus I miss SF, any chance I get to see the Victorians, etc, make me happy.
MEH-lissa can just go far, far away and I’d be ecstatic.
Brian Boitano wins the title as “PANSY OF THE YEAR”!!!!!!!!!!
“MEH-lissa”! LMAO.
Brian Boitano > Melissa D’Arabian
Sandwiched between Melissa’s show and Aaron McCargo’s show one could really tell what a personality that is not deer in the headlight afraid of the camera looked like.
Just another WGAS, WGAF program on the FN. With all the chefs and home cooks and food professionals in this country we get a figure skater to show us what he would make. The guy who mows my lawn in the summer is free in the winter. Let’s see what he would make?
Someone remind me why I want to watch an Olympic Ice Skater/Non-chef on FN? If you want goofy, Adam is quite enough for me.
I don’t care if he is or is not gay but how did he land a triple toe into this gig?
Gaily?
When Brian Boitano was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
And saved the maidens fair.
So what would Brian Boitano do
If he were here today,
I’m sure he’d kick an ass or two,
That’s what Brian Boitano’d do.
Brian BoyToy-no versus Chuck Norris???
I came across Brian’s show by accident while trying to find something worth watching. While I love Brian as a skater, I went into his show prepared to not like it. Why? I don’t know–just couldn’t see him on a cooking show, I guess. Was I ever pleasantly surprised–he is so comfortable in front of the camera, personable and likeable! I’m totally hooked!
Absolutely hilarious! Food Network humor on pophangover.com has me laughing out loud for sure!
Spoiler Alert! What Would Brian Boitano Make 8/30:
Derby Girls
After sharing post-game Bacon Martinis with an all girl roller derby squad, Brian invites the team to his house for a dinner party. All of Brian’s simple and succulent recipes are created with the ladies’ favorite ingredient – Bacon!
That “Beggin’ Strip” commercial is gonna be on my brain on day! Bacon…Bacon…Bacon…
I might be getting triple loopy as I age, but I actually enjoy Brian’s show. He’s comfortable in the kitchen and is genuinely affable and entertaining. The show is well-edited and never becomes boring. Who would have guessed that FN might just have a hit – finally!
Okay, I did watch the show again this week, and I have to say that I like it. I guess what took me by surprise a week ago is that I am a figure skating fan, too, and I am so used to the serious, competitor Brian, that the funny and irreverent Brian caught me off guard. I agree that he seems very comfortable in the kitchen, even MORE comfortable than the host of the show that preceded it. I find it very refreshing that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. FN should pay attention: This is how you properly showcase a non-chef having their own cooking show. Yes, there are shades of the Barefoot Contessa in here (that is, more lifestyle than instruction), but having an entertaining non-professional person who can pull this off and relate to the audience does make it less intimidating to want to try some of these recipes.
Having a bacon themed episode doesn’t hurt, either. :)
Kathy, you’ve expressed the same sentiment as I. After seeing my first episode (derby girls & bacon), I think you’ve summed it up well. Looking forward to seeing the show and trying the recipes.
Hi I’m from France and I wuv What Wood Bwyan Boitano make!!!
Ze is zo Cute, and zo Gay as Paree. Az for zat Melissa bwoad, mon doo ze is zo inept and pwetenzious. An zoze teeth…I zot she had a mouz full of piano keez. Keep up ze good work Bwyan!!! Viva le Boitano!!!
@OliveLoahf – Piano keys…I mean keez!! LMFAO!!
I haven’t had a chance to check the FN site, but “What Would Brian Boitano Make?” is on in primetime (9:00) tonight. I wonder if they’re trying to see if this show would fly with the rest of the nightly lineup?
I happened upon Brian’s show last night. From the other room, my spouse – reminiscent of Dom DeLuise in “Blazing Saddles” – said, “What is that? Sounds like steam escaping!”
This was one of the WORST shows Ive ever seen on Food Network. I cant stand watching him.
Saw Brian’s show today. Excellent goodies. An Italian take on French dishes. Now that we have the Italian food taken care of we can go on to Southern food. Why not get Dolly Parton for it, at least she doesn’t y’all you to death.
“Saw Brian’s show today. Excellent goodies. An Italian take on French dishes…”
I was among those who were skeptical at first, but I’m not ashamed to admit that I find Brian Boitano’s show to be classy and clever. The food looks awesome, and Brian comes across as an exceptional cook and consummate host. I’d love to be invited to one of his parties!
“I was among those who were skeptical at first, but I’m not ashamed to admit that I find Brian Boitano’s show to be classy and clever. ”
Me too. Hell, since FN is no longer about cooking seriously anyways, might as well enjoy some programming on the network!
LOVELOVELOVEEE Brian Boitano! Food Network already has too many fake people (aunt sandy and little miss ray of sunshine) that you can tell don’t have nearly the same passion for cooking that Brian does.
The whole point of the show is to have fun while cooking and not take it too seriously. Now i will be the first to admit that I am infatuated with Ina, but can every person honestly use “good olive oil” or is it ok, like in Boitano’s show, to just use bacon fat?
He makes me want to get in the kitchen and cook right after his show!
Brian fits right in at what is essentially now the Food Entertainment Network.
I rolled my eyes when I first heard the concept but what a fun show! Brian had me laughing the whole time, great ideas for cooking, he knows his stuff. He’s who he is, doesn’t take himself too seriously and not afraid to be goofy. As FTV shows go, this is far better than anything else they have. But, it is a much less plain vanilla show than anything else they have so I can see some people not liking it and some people loving it.
I’m frustrated that the foodnetwork continues to be less and less about food or teaching people to cook, but that’s Bob Tuschman’s problem, not Brian’s. The guy is funny, he knows he’s not a chef and he really isn’t trying to be (ahem… Rachael) he’s just a funny, watchable guy. I don’t love the show, but I like it.
I absolutely LOVE This show. Brian is hilarious, the show is entertaining, the food looks DELICIOUS and even more fun POSSIBLE TO MAKE. Thanks Brian for making good TV out of food.
“..the food looks DELICIOUS..”
I don’t know if Brian Boitano is actually doing his own cooking or if he has a very talented sous-chef, but the food on his shows has been AWESOME! I ventured over to the FN website yesterday and put up with the frickin’ slow load because I wanted to check out Brian’s recipes. The appetizers have been AMAZING – can’t recall ever seeing others on any FN show that looked so good. I’d like to add a few to my repertoire, Bravo, Brian!
I for one don’t understand all this extreme Brian Boitano asskissing I’m seeing on this website. He’s extremely annoying. For every person who likes his personality I guarantee there are 25 that hate it. The show itself is decent, but it’s certainly not “sing his praises from the rooftops” great like so many of you are claiming. What gives? Did he pay his San Francisco friends wads of cash to come here and hype him up for some positive PR?
There’s no asskissing. I am a straight single 27 year old from North Carolina. I hate figure skating, but think Brian is an amazing on air entertainer. You can’t argue that his show is not entertaining and hilarious. That’s why we watch it. Not to mention, he’s not a professional chef, that makes his dishes more relatable to non-gourmets.
I was skeptical until I saw the show. It’s great! I only wish I was Brian Boitano’s friend. The show is funny, refreshing and Boitano has some genuinely unique recipes. I love his cheeky humor. I would have thought it would appeal to FNH…
Brian’s show is very entertaining and he provides some easy recipes that I would enjoying making, and he is fun to watch. Who cares if he is gay or not? Great show!
Loved Brian’s show. He is genuine, witting and refreshing.
PLEASE BRING THE SHOW BACK……don’t care about his sexuality….or anyone else’s for that matter…..
That’s not about being gay?
Meh, say waht you want about his antics and sexual status the show is hillarious and if you argue, I mean common south park influenced the food network and that alone is pretty f’in sweet… oh and thank you whoever it was for calling rachel ray out she pisses me and many other people i know off…
I have seen this show twice – it was all the time I was willing to waste. His show is horrid. I like shows where they make dishes I would actually cook myself. I’m sorry but throwing three scoops of coffee ice cream with some milk in a blender, then after whirring it around a bit, stirring in some busted-up dry donuts & some shaved chocolate does not turn my crank. Pan frying some “tube steak” & throwing it in a bun smeared with butter is crap. My 3 yr old nephew could come up with better dishes than this “guy”.
His show is the ONLY thing on the Food network I enjoy watching everytime . I get sick of the staple annoying personalities on the food network, making the same food with the exact same phony kitchen setups. HIs show is hilarious, homemade, he makes good reachable for a novice food. and did he is HILARIOUS. Please don’t let snooty people take him off the air. Regular people who don’t make “Triffle puff cakes” need more reason to watch the food network and get excited about cooking at home. I am a 27 year old male.
