Food Network’s Ad Sales “Delemma”
![]() |
Apparently, the Food Network has an entire website dedicated to nothing but selling advertising. I was browsing it earlier today, and noticed two things that really disturbed me:
1) They refer to Sandra Lee as “your best friend in food.” Um, no. That woman isn’t my “best friend in food” – or in anything else for that matter.
2) Someone misspelled DILEMMA! Right on the main page! Unfortunately, they wrote “DELEMMA” instead. Ouch.
Sure, typos happen… but on a professional page that’s supposed to impress people and paint your network in the best possible light? Come on, Food Network. Who’s over there writing for your website? Tyler Florence?

THIS WEEK: Another tailgating weekend! Alex G's onion rings, an awful slow cooker experience, Ina & Jeffrey Garten's lame steak throwdown, Jennifer Hudson's annoying Weight Watchers commercial, Restaurant Impossible's cheap makeovers, and more.

OMG. That’s…… embarrassing.
Why am I not surprised? They are all running around like chickens with their head cut off over there. One word comes to mind: inept.
Sandra Lee isn’t my best friend in food. She’s my arch enemy in food!
Yikes. I’m admittedly not the best speller in the world, but even I can spell dilemma.
I wonder how many people stared at that and approved it? 5? 10? No one caught that mistake? Really?
Food Network should hire you.
…and why is the word brand capitalized underneath that horrendous misspelling? Unnecessary Capitalization really Annoys me Too!
It wouldn’t be so bad if the word was in small print and mixed in with a lot of other words. Instead, it’s GIGANTIC, and right out in the open. How the hell could they have missed that?

Seriously, they’re making it too easy for you guys here.
Cheapskates. Probably, TFN is cutting costs by having a bunch of interns (read: free labor) doing all the scut work, apparently with no one checking on their work. Ditto for those nasty food shots.
I never even noticed ‘dilemma’. I was too distracted by the ‘best friend(fiend is more like it) in food’ And the ‘Food-centric environment’ statement.
Question: Where on the food network website is this page? I just spent 10 minutes trying to find it so I could laugh at it, but I can’t seem to find the page. I know that the site is terrible, but what the hell?
It’s funny, but I really like seeing the originals on these typos before they correct them. :)
Just a sign of the times. I see misspellings and grammar errors everywhere I look. People try to rely on software spell checkers and grammar checkers to do the checking for them. It doesn’t always work.
There is a mattress store near me that is a “Clearence” center. No kidding…CLEARENCE!! And it’s on a banner that’s a good 2′ high by 8-10′ wide.
As someone said, no one checks this stuff any more.
It’s spelled the way that Sandra Lee pronounces it!
The spelling issue is, of course, a HUGE concern. Also of particular concern to me is the question itself. Who was asking this question??? Why do they even care??? How about they just cook something yummy in the kitchen for their family or whoever? Sorry, that’s a very pie-in-the-sky remark, but I truly believe it and it really bothers me that TVFN has devolved into ‘culinary POVs,’ ‘food-centric environments,’ and ‘branding.’ Just cook some damn food. And preferably food that has never been canned, powdered, and/or processed. Thanks, your friend, Katie.
In what world.
In what galaxy.
In what Universe.
Can that monstrosity of a non-chef be the best friend of anything? Short of the Processed Food Division Of BioGen industries.
Or any and all Liquor Lobbyists.
Crap on a cracker.
Just when I think FN is done insulting the brain their viewers, they go one more level down.
Yes, DELEMMA is bad, but, seriously… SEASONGS? Maybe that’s why Rachael’s dish looks so horrid. It contains SEASONGS!
Hmmmmm, what’s worse the poor spelling on their website or the food chef who can’t speak properly? (*cough* Aaron McCargo)
What the hell is ‘food centric’?? I don’t even pretend to know what that’s supposed to mean. Maybe the FN people should stop trying to sound intelligent with fancy phrases and stick to spelling things properly. I think they DO have a dilemma and it’s called Bob Doucheman, I mean Tuschman. Really running a tight ship, aren’t ya Bob!
And it is an arguably incorrect use of the word. A dilemma is when you have to choose between equally unfavorable or disagreeable alternatives.
The third definition is “any serious problem,” which I suspect has been added because so many people have started using it that way instead of its original meaning.
See also “ironic.” Almost always used incorrectly.
If Sandra Lee is your BFF, you need to get out of the food business, ASAP.
I was taught to spell it, “dilemna.” I looked it up and the correct spelling is dilemma, but it seems a lot of people have been taught to spell it with an “n” for some unknown reason.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who notices these things! Is this the result of lowering the bar in our schools?
Well there’s the Food Network for you – semi-literates, who have to show hard-corn porn movies to boost their on-line hit numbers.
@Smee: It’s separate from the main Food Network site, http://www.foodnetworkadsales.com/ . Free registration is required.
I was taught to spell it that way too, Princess Crazypants. I had no idea until now that I’ve been spelling it wrong, too!
Yeah, this website isn’t managed by the same people who do their main website. It’s nice to know someone out there has the time on their hands to find crap like this, though.
Yes, being literate just takes soooo much time out of the day.
it’s worth nothing that if you go to the ad site, the login/signup page has a screen shot that shows Alton Brown as “your best friend in food.”
They appear to be trying to say the network is your best friend, not the person in the picture. Good design could have made that clearer. That would require the kind of taste that would keep Guy Fieri off your network, though.
@ Melissa – Thanks!! I hope they didn’t correct it already. :P

go to food tv’s website in the UK and check out guy fieri’s new program, “diners, driven-ins, and dives!”
even the brits cant speel
Aunt Sandy probably wrote it all by herself.
