Julie & Julia: Zzzzzzzzzzzz
Posted on August 5th 2009 by Jillian Madison

Our friends over at Someecards just sent us one of their newest images, mocking the upcoming Meryl Streep movie Julie & Julia:

julie-julia

We can relate. None of us here have even the slightest desire to see a movie about some random blogger who spends her days blogging about her love of some other woman’s recipes. Yawn. Not to take anything away from the legend that is Julia Child, but this flick sounds like a laughless SNOOZEFEST of epic proportions.

What’s wrong, Meryl? You didn’t feel like making The River Wild 2?

(Like the card? Send it to a friend at Someecards!)

Lol, while that is funny, i’m planning to see it with my daughter the day it comes out. It looks charming to me…

  2. Klaus says:

If this is ANYTHING like “Mamma Mia,” I will have to see it 10 times. There’s nothing like watching Meryl Streep make a total fool of herself, crying, laughing a very hard forced laugh, making all types of faces and grimaces, snorting and guffawing. Then there’s the horrible dancing and general silliness. “MM” was like a Stage IV accident site that I could not stop watching–it was an atrocity. I expect this to be the same thing, and Meryl, if there is ANY singing, I hope you left that to Amy–she can actually sing.

Buzz Killers! You deserve to eat vegan food for an eternity!

  4. Terry S. says:

Better yet, spend purgatory with Guy Fieri!

  5. Memoria says:

I complete agree with this post. While I love any movie with Meryl Streep in it, I have no desire to see this movie.

  6. Max says:

Meryl is always great in every movie. She can play everything and I think that she did a great job in “Mamma mia!”. I’m curious about her next movie and that’s why I would like to see Julie & Julia.

  7. Tatiana says:

I’ll wait for cable. From the tv ads, it looks like Meryl overplayed the part of Julia more than a bit. I’m with Klaus on this one – as good an actor as Meryl is, she’s been hamming it up more and more as she ages.

  8. Deen says:

I’m dragging my bf to see it tomorrow.

  9. CherryRose says:

When my DH and I take our winter cruise in January, the film will probably be showing on the ship. Relaxing on a comfy chaise, Caribbean breezes blowing across the deck, twinkling stars overhead, sipping a Margarita or a glass of fine wine…I might actually enjoy the flick! :)

  10. Stacey says:

I can’t wait to see it!

  11. Mike says:

Totally looking forward to seeing the movie. The book was hilarious. From the previews, Meryl Streep is channeling Julia Child. Looks like a great performance.

  12. Lily says:

I will see this movie because I love Meryl Streep in anything (except Doubt), think Amy Adams is great, and loved Julia Child.

Julie Powell, on the other hand, I cannot stand. She is just so full of herself. A friend of mine liked her blog and sent her a donation (did you know she asked for donations???). He never got a thank you from her! I put a comment on her blog about this and not only was my comment not posted, but she STILL did not thank him. Ungrateful wench.

  13. Spice Weasel says:

I wish they’d just made a nice biopic about her and left the blogging nonsense out of it. I plan on hitting it on Pay per view and fast forwarding through half of it.

  14. lauren says:

    hi hater

  15. Jun says:

    @LILY. LOL!

  16. DesignerJeans says:

A Movie about Julia Child… good.
A movie about a blogger who used her as a gimmick and shares as much if not more time then her on the screen… bad.

Should have been all JC, all Meryl. If her life wasn’t important enough to the producers to make a whole movie from then the producers are loony and won’t be getting any of my movie bucks.

It has been posted that Julia did not like this blogger and thought of her as a gimmick as well.

    I’m with Julia.

  17. Byrdie says:

I love Julia Child. I watched her on TV when I was a little kid and she motivated me to love cooking. That being said, I wouldn’t go across the street with free tickets to see this film. I prefer to remember her as she was. I don’t need Meryl Streep overacting the part of this lovely woman, and don’t need Hollywood adding untrue bits to enhance the story, and I sure don’t give a rats behind about some silly girl and her need blog-o-rama life.
@SpiceWeasel-I agree with you. Julia’s life story would have been a much better choice (if the Hollywood folk felt such a need to make a movie about her). Don’t need all this other blather nonsense.

  18. vegfoodie says:

A blog mocking the success of another blogger… interesting.
I bet if you came up with the idea, you’d be cashing in, too! I know I would. :P

  19. *Di* says:

Love J. Child and M. Streep. I would think the OTT acting on Streep’s part might be necessary to capture Julia’s REAL personality, which was rather OTT – plus having to come across as being 6’2″ ;)
I guess maybe they put in the back-story with the blogger to make it more “current” and maybe appeal to a wider audience?
I’m only interested in Julia’s story.
As for the Julie person . . . not sure why I should give a rat’s ass about her? Maybe I’ll care after I see the film.

  20. UGH says:

I commented about this in another post about the movie….

Dan Ackroyd turned down the part of Julia. They wouldn’t let him say “Don’t forget to save the liver!”.

I love Julia Child. She and my Mom were born on the same day. How bad could that be??

  21. KathyCalculates says:

AW…are your shoes too tight? Quit being so negative! It’s not about recipes! It’s about expanding your comfort zone. I hope there will be massive sounds of you “backing up” and taking a fresh look at this one.

  22. Jillian Madison says:

    @Kathy,
Actually, my desire to skip this film has nothing to do with my shoes. This isn’t so much a movie about Julia Child as it’s a pandering Hollywood creation, with lame modern day pop culture references throw in to maximize revenue by appealing to as many people as possible.

Also: I do enjoy Meryl Streep, but I agree with everyone who said she’s been HORRIBLY overacting over the last 10 years. I literally find that painful to watch.

Still, we’re curious to hear all of your opinions after you see the movie! Let us know what you thought of it!

  23. Byrdie says:

UGH-You still crack me up with that comment! Dan Ackroyd did such a great job of his characterization of Julia. I read somewhere (a long time ago) that Julia found his portrayals very funny and that she enjoyed watching him. I especially loved when he “cut” his finger while chopping up a chicken! Funny stuff!!

  24. CherryRose says:

The first time that I saw the promo for this film, I wondered if Robin Williams had been considered for the JC role.

  25. Teague says:

I read Powels book (bought it second hand) found it hard to finish. I have heard that she has another book coming out. And it sounds more or less like her first. This time she is discovering things about her self and her marriage working in a butcher shop. Same story different location.

JC lead such as fascinating it’s a same the simply could make a movie about that.

I have also heard that JC did not like the idea and thought it was silly. She did, on the other hand, enjoy the Dan Akcroyd impersonation and even played it for her friends. He even performed it live for her at a birthday celebration.

  26. Byrdie says:

Does anybody know where the clip of Ackroyd as Julia may be? It’s not on You Tube (at least I couldn’t find it). Now that would be entertaining to see!!

  27. Byrdie says:

@Jun!! A million thanks. I laughed till I cried. Ackroyd was OTT funny and captured Julia perfectly. Thanks so very much!

  28. Jun says:

    @BYRDIE. No prob! :)

  29. UGH says:

Very happy to oblige, Byrdie! I LOVE that clip too.
I just tried that link to Hulu but the video won’t work, just the audio. I’ll try again later on.

I think the reason I loved Julia is because she was so down to earth with no pretenses. FN did a pretty good job when they featured her in their ‘Cheftology’ series a couple of years ago.

  30. dan says:

i dont care what anybody says. meryl streep is hot.

  31. Terry S. says:

I saw Julie & Julia this afternoon, I LOVED it!

  32. Barb says:

If the funniest scene they could come up with for the trailer was the lobster kicking the lid off the pan, I have no interest in seeing this. And when I see Julie saying “no fear,” I just want to smack her. You couldn’t pay me to see this movie.

  33. Jerry Grimes says:

You are stuffed full of tripe FN Humor. “Julie and Julia” is probably the best comedy of the year, and any true foodie reveres Julia Child as the goddess of butter and all things yummy and french. Stick a baguette in it, will ya?

  34. Lu says:

Looking forward to seeing it, too! Julia’s a legend and between her and the Frugal Gourmet, they were the inspiration for me learning to cook as a child! I think the “Julie” part will draw in more viewers than a straight biopic would. While I would love a JC biopic, it wouldn’t last long in a theatre.

  35. Luvscrbbl says:

I have NEVER been so BORED in my life. This movie was a total waste.

  36. Katie says:

The only parts of the movie that are funny are the parts with Julia Child. The Julie Powell parts are horrible – no offense Amy Adams (you’re brilliant!). Julie Powell in real life is kind of snarky and hateful. I put the book down three chapters in because I couldn’t stand her whining.
