Unsanitary money saving tip alert!
Have you seen the infomercial for the Smart Mop? At the 30 second mark, pitchman Anthony Sullivan suggests that “in these tough times” it’s a great idea to wring out your spilled soda into a glass and drink it. Yum! How refreshing!
Conveniently, they made no mention of the ketchup, sand, dirt, dog excrement, or whatever you previously mopped up also ending up in your zesty new glass of cola. And what about the bacteria on your floor and on the dirty mop head! Ew! Sure, you’ll save yourself 8 cents in soda, but you’ll potentially be out $24,750 in hospital bills. What a bargain!
Thanks, Anthony, but we’ll just pour some new soda.
(If you can’t see the embedded video, you can find it here on YouTube. Thanks for the tip, Addina!)

I’d noticed that – and great to see I’m not the only one utterly DISGUSTED by that suggestion in the ad!
He likes his food served from the floor, check out this photo.

They need to put a disclaimer that tells people NOT to do this. You know there are some emptyheads out there who will go “WHOA! 8 cents!! Holy crap! If I do that for say 20 years, I can save myself a whole $5! WOW!” Exclamations included. Then the company will get sued and it will lead to a McDonald’s type warning “Caution: Do not eat food/drink cleaned by mop. It may be hazardous to your health.”
Anyone see Idiocracy (movie)? I feel we’re headed in that direction…
a ShamWow on a stick… how original.
Wow… he definitely needs a disclaimer, so some yahoo doesn’t sue him for getting severely ill.
I wasn’t sure if this was real when I first saw it. Either way, it made me dry heave.
I wonder how many retarded, learning impaired people actually followed this guy’s advice ? Consumerism gone totally bad. Wake up.
How the !@#$% does Melissa have 53% fan favorite??? People, you need to get over to the FN site and vote!
The times aren’t THAT tough, Sully.
*rolls over in grave*
He said, “got wood.” Hee hee
Yuck, ready to drink soda from the floor.
@Billy Mays. Ha!
I saw that and it surely made me want to slit my wrists. Disgusting.
Sounds like one of Aunt Sandy’s money saving tips.
You guys leave Sully and Billy Mays alone! Besides, that mop is way older tham sham wow :p.
So if one set of crapola is 20 bucks, but wait there’s more, and he includes, free, a second set of identical crapola (also valued at twenty dollars), how is that a 50 dollar value?
@PrincessCrazyPants – I wondered if anybody else had caught that wood comment too!
LOL @ Teague!!!
Oh my. I thought it would be a very dry, but dumb joke that pokes fun at the crappy economy to make us feel better for 0.05 seconds. No indication it was even a joke. I don’t know, maybe that Sullivan guy is a whole new level of dry humor. I’m too OCD to actually drink floor-soda.
I thought I knew Aussie humor. I grew up on “Young Einstein” after all.
*looks him up* Oh, he’s from the UK. Why has he Aussified his accent? Who do all non-USA pitchmen seem to exaggerate their accents to be annoying Australian caricatures?
That Magic Bullet guy makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spork.
“If you’ve got wood, you’ll love it even more!”
I love this commercial. Tony Sullivan is God!
pretty sure that “tough times” claim is part of the ad’s gimmick to get people to talk about it and repost it everywhere…bet it helps sell a zillion of these, FNH should ask for commission
I bet Jamika’s bitter she didn’t think of that for the Tyler Florence challenge.
Why is it all the TV pitchmen sport UK accents ? UK accents annoy the hell out of me. They do this is on purpose. The dude who pitches the Magic Bullet is the # 1 night-time annoyance.
We lack Pitchmen in this world after the passing of Billy Mays. So I don’t care what things Anthony says, he’s entertaining. And I’d actually buy one of those.
Have you watched a commercial for Kaboom lately? It’s just not the same.
@Scott: The funny thing is, they still use the video of Billy Mays, they just edited out any face shots.
Anybody else notice that he put a dirty mophead in the washer with some clothes?
My favorite part was when the other mops and brooms popped up in the background… I was half expecting “Don’t you want me baby” or “Baby come back” from the Swiffer commercials.
Sillies, you take a brand new mop, sop up your drink, wring it out, then throw it away! This guy’s selling mops, after all, not sodas.
I thought this was a glitch or a joke … but after seeing the same commercial with the same disgusting line several times, I realized they were actually serious. Talk about icky! YACK!
