Some of these are surprisingly clever.

A hot dog eatery located in an old bank building in St. Louis was called First Federal Frank and Crust, which I thought was clever.

First Federal Frank and Crust Co. had awesome pizza. Unquestionably the best pizza I ever had in St. Louis.

Just falafs, EN Thai Sing, Lettuce Eat, Fishcoteque, and Thai The Not are the best one.s

Those crazy Thai people! So creative.

  5. Gayle King
    September 17th, 2009

My favorite was Nin Com Soup. Made me giggle like a 6 year old.

  6. Jennie
    September 17th, 2009

I wish I was this witty! I loved Thai Me Up!

  7. Dank Dillweed
    September 17th, 2009

@Jennie: Don’t sell yourself short (I PRAY you’re not a dwarf or “little person”). If you’re at this site, chances are you’re just as sarcastic, cynical, and demented as the (mostly) rest of us, which in turn, makes oneself “witty”.

Now go on, and make someone spit out their adult beverage, it’s in you.

  8. Leslie

Filled of Dreams is my fave. It’s just unexpected!

    “Filled with Cream”

Can’t decide on a fave among these creative monikers.

While not truly “punny”, there are a few eateries where I’ve been that have names with somewhat dual meanings:

Let Them Eat Cake in Stratford, Ontario is obviously a tribute to Queen Victoria’s famous quote.

Moveable Feast in Ann Arbor, MI is reminscent of the Paris memoirs of Ernest Hemingway.

The Gandy Dancer, also in A2, is housed in a historic train depot. Railroad workers were known as “ganders” that morphed into “gandy dancers” for the movements that they used to lay tracks.

It was Marie Antoinette said ‘Let them eat cake’, not Queen Vic – her famous quote is ‘We are not amused’.

    |
Sandy replied on: July 1st, 2010 at 1:42 am

In the spirit of keeping history as straight as possible. The saying “let them eat cake” was said long before Marie Antoinette’s time, and is often attributed to King Louis XIV’s wife, Marie-Theresa, who lived one hundred years earlier. It is a political reference to a ‘tax’ on bakeries that should have benefited the poor. Check out the straight dope web site for a nice little summary.

SaraCVT replied on: July 1st, 2010 at 2:10 am

Yeah–actually, Marie Antoinette never said “Let them eat cake”. A lot of things that “everybody knows” about her personality actually aren’t true. Betcha didn’t know that she was interested in the poor and tried to make sure that everyone got enough daily bread to eat. Somehow, that never made it into the official histories.

“Let Them Eat Cake in Stratford, Ontario is obviously a tribute to Queen Victoria’s famous quote.”

It was actually Marie Antoinette. Sorry! I think there’s a portrait of Queen Victoria in the restaurant, and that’s what made me think of her.

  15. Dank Dillweed
    September 17th, 2009

@CherryRose, I have to say, my favorite name to date was this “male-friendly” establishment (now defunct) on North Clark St. here in Chicago, aptly named…..

    “The Manhole”

It truly doesn’t get much better than that.

  18. CherryRose
    September 17th, 2009

@CherryRose: “Off with your Head” for that faux pas.

A little harsh, don’t ya think? LOL! I’d rather see some heads rollin’ at FN :))

  19. Dank Dillweed
    September 17th, 2009

Cherry, nothing is too harsh for you Yanks when it comes to Haute Cuisine, you ignorant slobs! LOL

I used to make stops in Kalamazoo and/or Ann Arbor on my way to Taylor/Dearborn a few years ago, good times up there, far less expensive/laid-back than here in Obamaland. And the women folk are real, friendly, people. Sometimes wish I didn’t have a wedding band on…

  20. Brie
    September 17th, 2009

Down the street from me is a place called “Lettuce Feed You”

  21. CherryRose
    September 17th, 2009

@Dank: Haven’t been to the “windy” city for a while, but there is surely some fine dining there. Shopping, too.

  22. Dank Dillweed
    September 17th, 2009

@CherryRose: the only things that makes this the “windy” city now are all the blow-hard yuppies/yuppy wannabees.

Granted, we have a tremendous amount of exquisite restaurants/nightlife/shopping, but it may possibly be out-weighed by the number of jagoffs/gold-digging milf/cougars/posers that invade/inflate everything “a-high-a-flutin”.

I’d rather spend time in a greasy spoon in shitsville, ordering fried-chicken/pizza and a draft than go downtown and deal with Francois, the valet, and all the other ego-maniacs at Charlie Trotters or Frontera trying to impress their mistresses/sugar-daddies.

  23. Albert
    September 17th, 2009

What’s the fishcothque mean I don’t get it lol

  24. Jenny

    @Albert fishcotheque = discotheque — wanna boggie?

@Jenny:This is the best you could do?
You’re welcome to offer a ‘better’ one. T-Bone sent a fun addition. Jillian did a great job IMO.

  26. Matt
    September 18th, 2009

    It could be worse:

    “Mussel Building”

    “Miso Corny”

    “The Soy of Texas”

    “Cumin Resources”

    “Ketchup Rising Star”

    “The Oxtail Incident”

    “A Really Good Porking”

    or “Garlic Me.”

    Let’s quit while we’re ahead. :-)

  32. Katie
    September 18th, 2009

Geez, the places around me should be embarrassed. The best we have is “Twin Peaks,” and their emblem is two snow-capped mountains. Very clever…

  33. UGH
    September 18th, 2009

    They were all great!

Not a people eatery but this was the name of a pet bakery called Bone Apetit. Thought that was clever.

  34. Matt
    September 18th, 2009

@Stella: do what for a living? Eat? Corrupt ingredients in my mind?

(It would be nice to get paid to eat. As long as it wasn’t to eat Food Network food. I’m not sure what the overdose level of MAAAAH-SCAR-POHHH-NAAAY is, or of butter, but Giada and Paula would hit it pretty quick.)

  35. christina
    September 19th, 2009

there is a restaurant in atlanta, georgia called “lettuce souprise you” as you can imagine it’s a soup and salad all you can eat type place. and then in palm beach gardens, florida there is a place called woof-gang puck bakery and its a dog treat shop. i thought those were adorable!

    September 19th, 2009

  40. September 20th, 2009

There is a restaurant in South Florida, Delray Beach, I think, called Thai Coon.
Jacksonville has Wok N Roll, as well as Chinee Takee Outee.

  41. Arch Stanton
    September 21st, 2009

There are definitely some good ones there. I know there’s a Teeny Thai in my parents neighborhood…not so much a play on words as it literally is in a tiny location.

  42. kristy
    September 24th, 2009

@Matt – “Miso Corny” is my favourite so far!

  45. RSMBob
    September 30th, 2009

I don’t think it’s there any more but there used to be a Chinese restaurant in the Chicago suburbs called Ho Le Chow, which brings to mind a very popular phrase used by a well-known much-beloved Chicago sports announcer.

  46. Toria
    September 30th, 2009

Funny as list, I can’t pick a favourite though but to add to the list of the is one here in South coast NSW called “Wok N Roll” <3 it.

Sara replied on: January 4th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

It’s a play on “Discotheque”, the original name for a dance club in the 70’s, which was eventually shortened to just “Disco”–probably because drunk people couldn’t say the long form.

  57. December 8th, 2009
