This Lionel Richie Cake Has Made My Life Complete

Here’s Mary Alice’s description of what has quickly become my favorite cake of all time:

Two words for you: Lionel. Ritchie. This cake, made by Katherine, may frighten or concern the untrained viewer. If you have no idea what this is, and yet are strangely intrigued by it, let me clue you in. Check out this video from Mr. Ritchie that will explain everything. I can’t for the life of me explain why this cake was ordered (FOR A WEDDING!) but I am so glad it was.

I don’t watch Ace Of Cakes, so I have no idea who Katherine is… but I want to have her babies. If this heap of fondant-y goodness wasn’t featured on Ace Of Cakes, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. In fact, an entire episode should have been dedicated to it.

Here’s the full video for your viewing enjoyment. I’ve already played it 11 times. That is all.

(Why aren’t you following Charm City Cakes on Twitter? Because you didn’t know they were there? Neither did we!)

That cake is awesome! I’m a child of the 80s too and that Lionel bust is a freakin’ pop culture icon.

Charm City Cakes is on twitter? I had no idea. Thanks for sharing. They currently have 2750 followers. I wonder how many new followers they’ll get as a result of this article. Well, now it’s 2751 because of me :)

  2. Deb says:

OMG! I want this cake! I don’t even care that it’s made with enough fondant to choke a pack mule. Bring it on.

  3. Shay says:

He’s a creep in this video. Total stalker! How come no one has stopped him from following around the young blind girl?!

  4. oh_come_on says:

Can we see this cake dancing on the ceiling?

  5. Syd says:

They got it right, down to the mullet and the sacks between his bottom lip and chin.

  6. Phil says:

On one of those VH-1 “I love the 80′s”, Lionel Richie admitted that he hated the clay bust that they made for the video and thought it was a ridiculously stupid idea for a music video. But as a cake.. it’s glorious!

  7. Jill (not Jillian) says:

I actually think the cake looks even less like LR than the bust from the video. I love both though!

  8. RJTaurus says:

L.R. was lost on me, I thought Fred Astaire did the walking on the ceiling thing far better and 30 years earlier!

I like The charm city crew, but I think they are not the best cake decorators out there.

  9. We’re having our 25th high school reunion tomorrow and I made mp3 CDs for everyone attending (274 songs) and I’m also DJing it. If anyone asks me why “Hello” is not on the CDs or on my play list, I will call down the hellfire and kill them.

As Chris Rock once said, “Lionel Ritchie is the black Barry Manilow.”

  10. Martin says:

Can anyone please tell what exactly Chef Duff Goldman does on his Ace of Cakes show? I have never seen him make a cake – he is usually just goofing around, or maybe helping Geoff. He seems to have zero culinary talent and I find him, and his show, quite annoying. Also another thing that bugs me is that his so called “cakes” are usually mostly Styrofoam, cardboard and wood covered in fondant. The final creations seem to be mostly inedible! What is the point of this awful show?? Is it simply a carpentry and fondant sculpting show??

  11. Martin says:

I cant decide which is creepier looking, Chef Duff or that awful looking cake sculpture!

  12. RJTaurus says:

Sometimes you see him working, and he has skill, but he is big time into the “persona” thing. I think “Cake Boss” makes better cakes.Buddy the “boss” can really decorate, I loved the show when he did the blind folded decorating stunt.

  13. Martin says:

I agree — Cake Boss is so much better, less pretentious and much more interesting than Ace of Cakes. Also the cakes in that show seem mostly to be made out of cake!!! Not wood, not Styrofoam — real cake! It seems like it takes place in a real bakery. You actually see them baking cake!

  14. Trini says:

    Corniest. Video. Ever.

  15. When I was a kid, my father worked for Pillsbury, and my mother made cakes a couple of times each week.
For my birthday she made cakes in the shape of a boat, a truck, or a car, and I loved it.
I can appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that went into making the Lionel Richie cake.
    Not to mention the work.
    But it looks kinda creepy.
Maybe a cake in the shape of a microphone or sheet music would be more appetizing.

  16. Tara Reid says:

You either get this cake, or you don’t. Sadly, most of you people clearly don’t. Thanks for posting this Jillian, all of us 20 and 30 somethings get it. :)

  17. Dan says:

Agree with Tara Reid here! That is more than just a cake. It is an homage to an era. It’s supposed to look creepy. Haven’t you ever seen the video?????

  18. Kittykitty says:

Ah, the video. I remember it well. I don’t know about a wedding (What exactly would this be celebrating about marriage?) but for an 80s high school reunion, this cake would totally ROCK!

  19. I agree with Tara Reid (THE Tara Reid?!) — either you get this cake, or you don’t. I GET IT! Yes, the video is lame. Yes, the cake is ugly. But it’s supposed to be! The clay bust was one of the most memorable, ridiculous images in video music history. But it also speaks to an entire generation of 20-30 somethings who grew up laughing about it with their friends.

I bow to the Lionel cake! Even though Katherine’s version looks more like Alex Trebek than Lionel Richie!

  20. Adam says:

How weird is it that I came across this post this morning, then later in the day, found out that I know a guy who was at the wedding where this cake was unveiled. I’m still in shock.

  21. Adam, watch out. Things happen in 3′s. That means Lionel Richie might be showing up at your door with balloons later tonight.

  22. Alexis says:

I’d just like to add Charm City Cakes now has 2963 followers. That means you sent them 200+ overnight. Can you promote my Twitter account pleaaasee? :)

Adam, that is so weird! (Twilight Zone music playing)

  23. StephieBee says:

    omg, what a stalker

  24. froglegs says:

    Cha Cha Cha Chiiiiaaaa!

  25. WeddingGuest says:

I was lucky enough to be at the wedding and I am a 30 something, barely. I got it. If you didn’t get it, then the groom was more than happy enough to explain it to you with the help of PowerPoint!

  26. Yep, it's Me says:

I blame you, Jillian, for the fact that this song has been in my head for days now. I’ll be sending you my psychiatrist bills :)

  27. Jay Bell says:

Wasn’t there a “Facts of Life” episode where one of the girls made something similar for their celebrity obsession, only to have the star’s security destroy it in case it was a bomb?
