BREAKING STORY: Is Cablevision Dropping HGTV and Food Network?
Posted on December 31st 2009 by Jillian Madison

losefoodnet

Cablevision / Optimum Online customers have been seeing a menacing message scrolling across the bottom of their television screens, saying that they may be losing Food Network and HGTV at midnight tonight. They provided a phone number, and suggested we all call it immediately to prevent this from happening.

I called the phone number, which put me in touch with someone at HGTV/Food Network instead of someone at Cablevision, as I had hoped. The representative told me Cablevision’s contract with HGTV and Food Network is expiring tonight at midnight. Basically, HGTV and Food Network are demanding more money, and Cablevision doesn’t want to pay it. If they can’t come to some sort of agreement, HGTV and Food Network may go black until a resolution is met.

The guy I talked to at the Scripps hotline spent 5 minutes trying to convince me that their channels were “worth more” than Cablevision wanted to pay. “So and so network gets $XXX and we just want what we’re worth!” he balked. I asked him where he was getting all the numbers he was rattling off to me, but he had no answer. He instead chose to talk in circles about how awful it would be to miss out on an opportunity to win HGTV’s Dream Home (the horror!)

  1. BOO! says:

What I heard today, if you are a COMCAST customer, you may lose FOX channel!!! Of course football games will be on that channel Friday!

    Midnight is the deadline!

  2. BOO! says:

Google godlikeproductions- Time Warner Cable may drop Fox TV

The write up includes Foodnetwork and HGTV

  3. J. says:

Thank you so much for this article/post, Jillian! My daughter was watching Food Network earlier and ran upstairs shrieking that Cablevision was dropping Food Network and wanted to know what was up. I re-tweeted your post on Twitter and we’re going to call Cablevision. Again, thank you for letting fellow Food Network — and HGTV — fans what’s up!

  4. DesignerJeans says:

But where will I watch Drive Ins, Diners and Douchebags then?

  5. FatSean says:

They’re considering dropping these channels and keeping the High School sports channel? What kind of loser cares about highschool sports? That’s for the also-rans in the middle of nowhere with no culture. Meh.

  6. chad says:

You mean like Comcast vs. Viacom; Fox vs. Time-Warner; whatever other big media company vs. whatever other big media company?

    Whatev.

  7. Drew says:

its time warner too. this happens every year. last year it was viacom (MTV networks) and now its scribbs and News Corp (Fox) those bastards arn’t raising my rates

  8. Dave says:

First of all why are they telling people to call a number that is run by Scripps? Isn’t that pointless? Shouldn’t people be calling Cablevision?

Second, I called the hotline just to fuck with whoever answered. I too asked specific questions, but didn’t get any real answers. I asked exactly how much of a rate increase they were looking for. Wouldn’t ya know it, they were “not at liberty” to tell me.

These greedy pricks are getting too big for their britches.

  9. Eyeris says:

Cablevision rips me off every month. I don’t want to hear one word about them not having any more money to pay their networks. They charge me almost $200 a month for internet and for cable, including Showtime. That is pathetic!!! And I’m the fool for paying it!!!

  10. Sam says:

If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

  11. Lana says:

Whatevs. As far as I’m concerned, FN is only good (such as it is) for another 5 months anyway. In May, it’s supposedly going all competition / reality, an that interests me 0%
But for the next five months, sorry for you folks who may (or may not) be dropped

  12. Oveta says:

All the cooking shows will be moved to FLN which will become Cooking – you will lose that one, too.

I have Time Warner and Ive had it with them. After losing NBA and MTV networks last year for several weeks, I was ready to bail as soon as i heard about the Fox stuff a few weeks ago. So, this week I signed up for U-verse – installation in less than a week, better DVR services, save $20/month, more channels, $350 dollars back on a prepaid Visa Card, $62 cash back from coupon cactus, and $10 off my bill for 6 months for doing automatic payments. My family and I have been customers of Time Warner since cable first existed in Austin (@1980 or so). Fuck Time Warner.

    • Katie says:

Oveta, I am praying for the day our area becomes prewired or whatever for Uverse and/or FIOS. We’re apparently in the boonies of DFW in those companies’ eyes, even though we’re actually in a rather booming suburb. I wonder if, on some level at least, AT&T and Verizon are in bed with TWC and satellite providers.

  13. Ryan says:

This really sucks. Like all of these channels and cable companies aren’t making millions and millions every year, they need to hold out on each other for more profits? And we’re the ones who get to suffer. Great. Where will i get my Good Eats fix now?

  14. Drew says:

nothing happened with me and TWC. i guess its cause it is much bigger than cablevision and has control over very high populated areas of the country, like LA. gues scribbs didn’t want to risk it with us

  15. Lana says:

    Woah. Trippy. http://www.youtube.com/user/ILoveFoodNetwork2009#p/u
    Especially http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaRXwBnov-s

This video of Guy Fieri was taped in November. So obviously this has been a long time coming down the chute. And as expected, FN’s PR team is way ahead on the spin game.

  16. Ryan says:

Cablevision is running a “We’re sorry” type commercial on the food channel. Saying that Scripps pulled the channels because Scripps wanted a different proposal because they (Scripps) is having financial difficulties. “It has become clear Scripps has dramatically changed how they distribute their programming. We hope that Scripps will reconcsider these offers and return Food Network to our television, and we appreciate your patience. “

  17. tony says:

THis is really getting out of control Cablevison has 10 million advertisements on and how many subsribwers and they still dont have enough to keep stations from being pulled IT IS TIME WE THE PEOPLE TAKE A STAND OR OUR RATES WILL BE DOUBLED AND HAVE LESS ENTERTAINMENT

  18. Bijoux says:

Cablevision is notorious for committing highway robbery of its subscribers and offering a fraction of what other Subscription services provide. Satelite TV offers many channels that Cablevision will not because it is all about money, not the desires of the folks who pay outrageous monthly fees. I’ve been trying to get BBC America and some other channels added for almost four years now. Fat chance. But the entire 200s are filled with foreign language channels – so Cablevision can make big bucks on these obscure channels. I don’t mind them offering them at an additional cost to people who do not want to learn English but what about the rest of us who foot most of the bill?

Cablevision infuriated many some years ago when they bought MSG – and then took MSG programming off the air because of fees. So for all of us who spent money on season tickets to the Rangers or the Knicks (owned by Cablevision’s Dolans) – supporting MSG – we were rewarded by not being able to watch on TV or see away games. It took several seasons before MSG came back – as a premium channel. Cablevision and the Dolans are a bunch of self serving piggies with little regard for the people who support them.

As for Scripps and the Food Network/HGTV, their timing is impeccable. With no warning and just in time for their much hyped new season starting in January they are hurting their viewers and using us to fight their battles. I do think Cablevision is cheap with programming and expensive with their subscribers – thus boosting their own bottom line. And I do agree that the Scripps channels have grown by leaps and bounds in popularity – so they do deserve to be paid more than pennies. However, it seems like this was timed badly and handled worse with the loyal viewers as the biggest losers. I think Scripps should air the new shows on their website during these miserable non-negotiations like some of the networks do with their shows.

I’ve made my complaints to Cablevision but I really think any conversation with them goes on deaf ears. And they had the audacity to tell me that there will be no refunds or adjustments to accounts. Less service for the same money. Very nice. Oh and I hear that Cablevision will be deregulated soon so I guess that means that they can step on us some more without any interference. They do what they please and laugh all the way to the bank. Maybe it’s time for us all to get a DISH!

  19. Cloves says:

Most of the tv I watch is HGTV and the food network. If this doesn’t get resolved I am dropping cablevision and jumping to fios. As horrible as a company that verizon is.

  20. Ralph says:

Make no mistake about it: Cablevision are the greedy, money-grubbing scumbags here. Scripps has to pay their talent, their producers, their production costs. Cablevision takes the bulk of your money and gives you the minimal customer service and service quality they possibly can. Put another way: Food Network has competition, Cablevision is a monopoly. You do the math. I am waiting for the day I can switch to FIOS. If you can, you’d be

  21. NoMoreRachaelRayHooray says:

I am so happy that Food Network is going away. This means I will never have to hear the hatefully shrill and grating voice of the most over-exposed non-cook in the media today – Rachael Ray. I would have paid more just to make her go away, so I wouldn’t accidentally be exposed to the hateful bleatings she pours out, should I be channel surfing and come across the Food Network.

Then there’s Sandra Lee and her ilk – will never be missed. Iron Chef? Feh! Netted out, Food Network has some of the most awful programming in the entire Cablevision lineup, and is steadily moving toward and all-reality/phony competition format that you would have to be lobotomized to even think of watching for more than sixty seconds.

This is the best news that I’ve had in a long time. As for HGTV, I guess the metrosexuals will have to go elsewhere for their daily dose of gay-oriented drivel. That’s two channels I will never miss, and if they replaced them with a 1950′s test pattern, it would be an improvement. This was an excellent business decision for Cablevision, and as much as I dislike their management, I can’t fault them on this one.

    • Katie says:

Wow. Hateful. On so many levels.

What happened to the “dislike” option for comments?

      • disliked comment says:

Guess it’s gone. Bad luck for you. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Guess you just can’t stand anyone not agreeing with you. Your life must be pretty frustrating, isn’t it? God forbid anyone express an opinion you don’t like. What do you do in response? Anyway, glad I made your day.

      • Katie says:

Um, what? I’m not quite sure what you’re intimating. I’m all on board for pointing out the numerous inadequacies of most, if not all, of the FN hosts. Just not in such a mean-spirited manner. I also don’t think it’s necessary to use homophobic slurs to express opinions, either. But I guess that’s just me.

        Happy New Year!

      • Ferd Berfle says:

        What homophobic slurs, Katie?

    • frank says:

Amazing that people actually pay to watch what they supposedly hate so much…..enough even to create a user name for the one they hate so…
I think you need to turn OFF the tv and go for a walk and clear your head!

    • Lisa says:

Have you ever heard of the “delete” function on the programming for your reception?!?!?!? If you had any brains you would have figured out that you can delete channels that you receive – It’s a choice we all have! Something like ‘go to menu – channel set-up – delete channel’…

  22. Dan says:

Both the cable providers and programers treat customers like we have an endless supply of money. (Very much like the government). They just keep raising rates and expect us to pay. Sorry, but the well is dry, there is no more. Goodbye Cablevision. Goodbye Food Network.

  23. IronChefPissed says:

Since I am not getting those two Networks do you think CABLEVISION will adjust my bill down? Dont hold your breath!!! They should pay the damn fee and cut networks that are pointless. I dont need 30 stations in Spanish, I dont need Bollywood, keep the 10 stations that show cartoons and use all that money to pay for things that people want to watch!

  24. camille says:

This is ridiculus!!! Happy @#$%%ing New Year cable! You raise our rates every chance you get then take channels away? WTF! Between loosing my phone service ever other day and this maybe it’s time to switch to Vios!!! I want my HGTV

  25. Art says:

How much $ are we really talking about?

  26. ghostwriter232 says:

FIOS is finally coming to Bedford NY. How great is that. We now have a choice. GOOD BYE cabble vision good bye’

  27. n says:

These are the 2 cahnnels I watch the most, am so dissappointed an may look for another way to view them on anoter cable cmpany

  28. Fed Up Consumer says:

Take a look at Cablevision’s website and your account details. If you are paying for the Family Cable package, click on the link that states exactly what is included in that package and you will see that HGTV and the Food Network channels are still there. Email Cablevision and demand a price deduction based on false advertising or breach of contract or whatever the correct term is.

    • sc says:

Yours was the best post FED UP! I’ve e-mailed 2 complaints to that horrible monoply of a cable company and I will be crediting my bill myself; I refuse to pay the whole bill especially that they just raise the rates AGAIN!! EVERYONE should not pay they’re full bill and follow FED UP advise

  29. Isabelle says:

Get rid of game show channel, soap opera channel, bollywood, mindless reality shows, high school sports, etc. and bring back my Food Network and HGTV. What am I paying the big bucks for here?

  30. maggie says:

Switch to VERIZON FiOS there should be no reason a cable TV company should be able to control your life’s entertainment when your paying for it.
cable has already raised their rates and now we get even less, if its optimum its crap
you might even help 225 laid off verizon workers return to work. lets once and for all send a message to cable you cant control our viewing content

  31. mirna sanchez says:

ok cable people get the channels that people are watching thats it what they paying for or give us our money back i only watch those 2 channels why are you taking so long to fix the problem

  32. Bob says:

Why would I want to watch the “worst cooks”or even “chopped” whining wannabes?
If I want to watch competition I will watch “rasslin”‘ of football, not the cooking channel.
Keep the good and REAL cooks broadcast on the air that is what the cooking channel is about and get rid of the cooking games program. That is what the cooking channel is, or should be and was, all about!
    Gosh, how I miss Julia!!!
