Cookalong With Gordon Ramsay: Episode 1

STARRING GORDON RAMSAY:
THE HUMAN SCRUNCHIE

(For anyone interested, I recapped this unfortunate trainwreck of a show over at Serious Eats. I like Gordon, but HATED this show. I found it disjointed, frantic, and impossible to follow. What did you all think? Did you cook along? Did you like the format? Did your blood pressure rise as much as mine did?)

THIS WEEK: Another tailgating weekend! Alex G's onion rings, an awful slow cooker experience, Ina & Jeffrey Garten's lame steak throwdown, Jennifer Hudson's annoying Weight Watchers commercial, Restaurant Impossible's cheap makeovers, and more.

I too like G.R. and was looking forward to this new show. OMG, this has to be one of the all time worst television shows I have ever seen! The format was beyond lame and when there was suppose to be an element of surprise during the show, it was so obvious the gag had been scripted. just awful! I can’t imagine Fox will run to many more episodes…
Agreed, it was brutal, but it was nice to have Gordon portrayed more like himself than the bastardized American version.
I missed it! However, it’s sounds like your write-up was the best thing that came out of it! Good Job Jillian!
I watched a tiny bit of the show and was thoroughly annoyed by it. I would have had a panic attack if I watched the entire thing. G.R. ran around to everyone like a chicken with his head cut off. I read your re-cap so that was quite enough.
What channel does it run on
It was on the FOX Network last night at 8:00pm CST.
I forgot to add the link to an article about the show from the Chicago Sun-Times to my earlier post.

I haaaated it from the minute his over botoxed face came on screen and and even more when he announced that he would not be cussing! What the fuck?
Then I was pissed that he had homewrecking rat faced LeAnn Rimes as a guest. Seriously? Of all the celebs he could choose from?
And it only went downhill from there.
That has to be a joke…there’s no way they’d be able to assess whether or not fires were caused by people trying to flambe THAT quickly; the show just aired last night!
Oops…that reply ended up in the wrong comment box…see comment immediately below.

These people are DONKEYS!!!
Jillian- Love Aunt Toddies Diary! You forgot to add ” And Where Did I Put My Keys ? “
I was so hoping the woman in the picture was Rachel Ray…
Haha I thought the same thing! I haven’t seen the show, so I was hoping it was a celebrity cook collaboration.
i bursted out laughing when the marine wife was waving the fire in front of her kids
First post. Love the blog, Jillian!
I’ve watched and enjoyed most of Gordon’s shows, so, quite reasonably, I thought I’d enjoy this one as well. When the show opened to a huge set with a cheering studio audience, I knew I had been mistaken.
Okay, first of all… What the hell happened to his face? Pale, shiny, strangely gaunt. And his voice.
But what ruined it completely for me was when he dragged the “celebrities” out. I abandoned ship at about the 5 minute mark and instead watched a recorded episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. A little too “Emeril Live” for me.
I hate this asshole, and this show did nothing to change my opinion. I posted the following review on Nigella Lawson’s food forum: “The show was a forced and frenetic mess. Gordon, despite his wearing an untucked, open collar, plaid shirt with sleeves rolled up instead of his chef’s jacket, smiling constantly with eyebrows arched up to demonstrate that he wasn’t at all mad, really, still intimidated the three in studio celebrities. Alyson Hannigan, Lee Ann Rimes and Cedric the Entertainer each behaved as if they were put in close quarters with a basket full of cobras while cooking next to Gordon. To his credit, he did not explode. On the other hand, he wasn’t quite able to manage the five ring circus going on around him with aplomb. The food was cooked and the show hurdled over the finish line at the end of the hour, but it wasn’t pretty. Seriously, if Gordon does want to soften his image, and use celebrities to do so, he’d be better off doing so away from a studio audience, working one on one with a guest either in the celebrity’s home or in Gordon’s studio kitchen, keep the chit chat to a minimum, focus on the cooking, and eliminate the shtick. If you missed this show, well, you didn’t miss anything.” Things are more genteel at this forum, so I left out the comment about Gordon’s face bearing the grim, insincere rictus of a shark, and that he seemed to be doing a bad imitation of Jamie Oliver. I hate Gordo, I hate HELL’S KITCHEN, and I hate every single one of the big-mouthed, trash talking, egomaniacal chumps who think having tattoos, a bad haircut and a worse attitude equals a personality they choose as contestants. God, give me IRON CHEF any day of the week!
Jon – Have you ever seen Ramsey in his British shows?
Yes, I’ve seen Gordo go all warm and fuzzy and inspirational. Big whoop. None of it makes up for the bullshit of HELL’S KITCHEN. The only episode of that show I want to see is the one in which the contestants rise up, act as one, pin him to a butcher block and drive a stick blender through his black heart. I don’t mind edgy TV. I love Tony Bourdain (most of the time, except when he does shtick). But Gordo? He can shove his head into the fry-o-lator at a Carl’s Jr. for all I care.
With you all the way on your comments, Jon.
From what I’ve read recently, it seems Gordon should spend more time trying to run his business enterprises and less on TV shows.
Agreed. And give my regards to Frank and Fanny Farkle.
No love for Sparkle Farkle?
DAMN!
I wish Ramsay was my human scrunchie!
…and human dildo! LOL
To Ferd Berfle: Frankly, I favor Flicker Farkle.
I taped this show, thinking it would be good late night entertainment for me. WRONG !! This was the worst of the worst. After three minutes of it, I couldn’t find the remote fast enough to shut the darn thing off, rewind and try to erase it from my mind forever.
Ramsay needs to stay away from people – he is toxic and totally lacks talent as an entertainer.
This show is an unqualified train wreck. Ramsay didn’t figure out people aren’t going to cook alongside him when he tested the concept on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
While I appreciate Ramsay has skills, he’s simply over-reaching with this show. It’s frantic, awkward, clumsy, and seems more like a video game…. And you can’t help but think there is a finished version of the featured dish at hand for the people that fail it.
Gordon used American cooks as one of his experiments in animal husbandry like he does to show his kids what food is really about at his home, on the BBCA show. They all went baaa, oink and moo— and he took them to the slaughter with this show. Terrible crappy show.
I’m a huge Gordon Ramsay fan and have watched all of the British Cookalongs (thanks youtube!) and was really, really disappointed in this show. I wish they’d left the focus on Gordon cooking instead of doing painfully forced sketches. They overloaded it with unnecessary celebrities. Also, I was kinda bummed to see that he was recycling recipes from the British show — come on!! Anyway, I’m a Gordon fan and I hope he and/or his manager gave the network hell for this and that they revamp it to make it less excruciating. I think the concept is great, but the execution was terrible.
By the way, if you haven’t looked up Gordon Ramsay spoofs on youtube, you’re missing out! :)
