Alton Brown Donates $100 To FNH; Offers To Match Pledges Of Other Food Network Hosts
![]() |
One of the questions I get asked most is, “Do Food Network hosts read this website? Do they love it or hate it?”
The answer: most of them haven’t acknowledged our existence. Paula Deen’s people sent me an autographed cookbook with a pair of pink bedazzled eyeglasses, Andrew Zimmern’s people sent me a t-shirt, and Tyler Florence threatened to sue me if I ever “harassed” him again (Tyler, you can have my 1995 Toyota Celica and my college loans; they’re all yours, dude!)
And then there’s Alton Brown. Last week, he wrote me one of the best e-mails I’ve ever received in my life: a simple note to say how much he enjoys reading this website, that it makes him laugh often, and oh yeah: that he made a $100 donation to show his gratitude for doing what we do.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Just when you thought the man couldn’t possibly get any cooler, he challenged his fellow Food Network chefs to a financial throwdown and offered to match all of their pledges to this website. Oh, it’s on now!
I sent out Twitter messages to Rachael Ray, the Deens, Alex Guarnaschelli, Bobby Flay, Ted Allen, Charm City Cakes, Guy Fieri, Adam Gertler, Giada, The Neelys, and Aaron McCargo to alert them about the challenge. We’ll keep you updated if any Food Network personalities actually do step up, admit they like the site, and decide to make a donation… though I’m not expecting to hear from Tyler Florence any time soon.
All jokes aside, a huge thanks goes out to Alton Brown for doing what he does, for doing it so well, and for being able to laugh at himself along the way. Cheers, Alton!
UPDATE: If any of the hosts actually DO contribute to Alton’s throwdown, a portion of the money collected will be donated to FeedingAmerica.org. For every $1 donated, Feeding America helps provide 7 meals to men, women and children facing hunger in our country.

That is soooo awesome! He is probably the most loved FN personality on FNH! Thanks Alton, I promise not to say how skinny and anorexic you look ANYMORE!
Umm, he DOES look skinny and anorixic! LOL, but in a healthy way. Somebody pls explain to me how that can be ….
:-D
Well, runners that clock high mileages often look rangy, but fit. That’s how he looks to me.
That is…… AWESOME. Just when I thought I couldn’t admire the guy any more.
Ben, you are ridiculously handsome. I would very much like to hurt your feelings.
Squirrel, funniest comment ever!
;^O
Ben, we’re still waiting on a bigger icon! (raising eyebrows up and down)
AB – just wanted to say that you rock… and love your shows.
I just hope all other Food Network chefs are as gracious and fun loving as Alton.
Alas I think not. I am so pissed off he is not on every night like he used to be. FN sucks so bad. If anyone in charge ever looked at this sight they might get a freaking clue about what is liked and what is shit. I know, dream on.
He’s on every night still…11pm Eastern/10pm central.
He needs to be on at 8:00, dammit. 8:00. A respectable primetime hour, not 11:00. Yes I have a DVR. He still needs to be on at 8:00.
I love this. Alton was one of the last people on FN I actually respected from a culinary perspective, and now I respect him as a person.
Amazing! It helps knowing that someone like Alton is grounded and has a sense of humor. Kudos to him.
Phenomenal. One would hope that a guy who has no problem using everyday objects to create props for his show would have a sense of humor, but it’s nice to see it confirmed. This is why his is the best show on the network.
This is AMAZING. I knew there was more than 624 reasons why I love AB!
This is totally and truly epic!
LOVE me some Alton Brown. He is, far and away, the best FN host there is.
Very cool. AB definately has a great sense of humor, as is evident in most every GE episode. Couple this with the fact he gives us little material to poke fun at…..no wonder he enjoys this site ridiculing his assocaites.
Agreed! I also think his geeky scientific approach has brought a lot of men into the kitchen who maybe might not otherwise have been interested. I know he’s inspired my brother-in-law to cook more.
Thanks, Alton. I referred to you as “His Geekitude” in the forums, and I mean it in the nicest way possible. :^)
That is so freaking cool of him! Love that guy.
Huge thumbs up, AB. You rock. Keep doing what you do – it’s all kinds of awesome.
HUGE brownie points, Alton. Thousands. Millions, even.
“Brown”ie points? heehee
*rimshot* :-D
I knew AB was awesome! This is just one more reason to love him!
I can’t wait to see if any of the others take him up… I’m rooting for Brian Boitano! He seems cool.
I’d be impressed if Ina did – but I think she’s very private…
That is really cool – always seemed like a good guy
AB is cool! and I think there are a handful of others that are just as cool. I know most won’t agree, but I have a feeling Bobby Flay can handle the jokes and even gets a few chuckles from them. Hope I’m right.
I would tend to agree with you on Flay. Sure he’s a little arrogant, but he has reason to be, and he’s a New Yorker. That’s how many of them roll. He seems to have a good sense of humor as well.
I met him he’s actually quite a nice guy believe it or not lol. I think he would see the humor in this site totally.
In fact, Alton once dished about his fellow FN stars regarding one of those happy-fun-FN-family specials they do at holiday time. He said Bobby Flay was THE nicest guy ever. I wonder why he comes across so arrogant on screen?
I think Bobby Flay would have to have a fairly good sense of humor considering how often he loses Throwdown.
JMO but I think he loses some of them on purpose, to keep the show going. He’s an Iron Chef after all. They have to think on the fly and really make their dishes pop. If he always won, what kind of show would it be? His losing = ratings and publicity for the contestants. He can probably outcook all of them lol. He is a nice guy btw, despite the comments to the contrary.
Ok my last sentence was redundant but you get my point. Captain Morgan ftw!
This is why we all love AB
Oh, I second that emotion! AB rocks, from his props to his quirky eyeglasses. AB is the an Original, and his programs represent like no others.
Thanks for being real, AB!
Reading that just made my day! That is awesome. You rock, Alton!! :-)
AWESOME! Pretty cool guy AND he has a sense of humor! Nice to be a fan of someone who doesn’t end up being an a$$.
I love Alton and Zimmern.
And what is wrong with Tyler Florence?? He has one of the most boring shows on FN. He should be thankful for any attention he gets. Lighten up Florence!
If I could sum up what was wrong with Tyler Florence in one sentence I’d be a miracle worker.
Oh, I can! He is cute, but not as smart as he thinks he is, and not as good of a chef either. Okay, two commas, but still I don’t think it’s a run-on.
WOW! Alton Brown IS the Master!
WE LOVE YOU ALTON! You are even more awesome than I originally thought. Keep on keepin’ on, and you look great!
ALTON IS AWESOME!
Thank you AB, yours are the only shows I regularly watch on FN. Now please get your next book published, I own and have read all of your previous books and I need a new fix. They are shelved with Julia Child, Jacques Pepin and James Beard.
Now I’m just afraid that Good Eats/Feasting on *insert travel surface here* will get canceled. We all know how Bob “Jong-il” Tuschmann feels about people disagreeing with him on anything.
I think he’s safe. He has such a huge fan base & is so versatile on that network, I don’t think they’d want to lose him!
Bob “Jong-il” OMG how funny is that! I could not agree more. Alton could you please tell us some of your personal stories while you diagram that protein helix? You know that’s what our viewers really want to hear. Get the fucking net.
+1 for Bob Jong-Il!
And Alton rocks!
Very cool!! It’s good to know that FN personalities can appreciate the humor on this site. We still love FN and watch but it’s fun to laugh too! It would be amazing to see if other FN peeps follow Alton’s lead. Have a new respect for Alton Brown.
Knew there was I reason why I liked Alton best…if you cannot laugh at yourself, what good are you???
Amen to that KSH. You posted my sentiments exactly. I admire a man who can get the joke like everyone else, even if it’s about him.
Hat’s off to you, Mr. Brown. You rock!!
What everybody else said and then some. “Good Eats” and “Iron Chef America” are the only FN shows I Tivo and watch regularly. Sense a connection, maybe? And I already have “Good Eats: The Early Years” and have put “Good Eats: The Middle Years” on my Wishlist at Amazon.com. Yes, I’m an Alton freak. Good to see my sense of character isn’t out of whack.
We love Alton! Great show, great guy.
He seems like such a cool guy. So glad to hear this. =)
In a sea of stupefaction on TFN, Alton Brown is the beacon of light; our lone hope. Cheers to AB! We all knew there was a good reason to adore you…
This news just completely changed my opinion of Alton Brown. I thought he was a pompous jerk. I was wrong.
Hats off, Alton. You now have one new fan.
Just another example of why he’s the best FN personality.
Being a geek, AB’s bringing science and geekery into cooking just made me love him. This is just reinforces my kitchen-crush. *hugs* and kudos to AB!
Congrats to FNH! That Alton sure is a nice guy!
Just another reason Alton is the best host FN has!
And this is why he is my favorite of all the chefs/hosts on FN.
Okay so how are the other Food Network hosts supposed to find out about this challenge?
I’ve got $50 of my own that says not one of them donates one cent!
I think Jillian has sent them Tweets with the link
I did send a few Tweets out to some of them, but honestly, there’s no way to get in touch with the hosts. Plus I highly doubt Rachael Ray and Paula Deen are running their own twitter accounts.
I’m really not expecting any of the other hosts to donate anything. It was simply Alton’s offer that mattered most to me here!
Kinda O/T, but I’m starting to suspect only about half of Guy’s tweets are really his. Don’t know for a fact, just suspect. Celebrities who don’t tweet for themselves don’t bother me so much, unless it’s all done on the sly, like. Would rather it just be open. JMO
My money is on Ben and I say that no one will pony up any $$.
I think your, and Ben’s, money is safe.
You know, I think Boitano might. He definitely has a sense of humor and doesn’t take himself too seriously.
I officially nominate Alton Brown for a “Friends of FNH” Award. What a class act!
Zimmern has been pretty cool too. (Ok, not with $$, but he’s back linked, RT’d, etc.) But AB has stepped it up! :-D
Go Alton – throwin’ it down for real!! I’m sorry I made those comments about you being too snarky (and skinny). You have now been re-appointed to favorite status.
WAY TO GO AB!!!!!! You totally effing ROCK! (PS your swedish meatball recipe is FAR AND AWAY better than my grandmother’s)
And I second the “Friends of FNH” Award
Remember his roast in a flowerpot? I actually did that! On Christmas! Turned out to be the best roast I ever made, so now I do it every year.
I somehow missed that one (I didn’t have a tv on and off for almost 8 years).
*grumbles* Now I have to go to FN to find the recipe…
It was on the “Good Eats” show “Family Roast”. I know because I’ve got it saved. I don’t have that terrific a memory that I remember it from Christmas to Christmas.
Actually, knowing how hard FN’s site is to navigate, I wondered if you COULD find the recipe. And I did. So I copied the link. Here it is: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/dry-aged-standing-rib-roast-with-sage-jus-recipe/index.html
I finally found the recipe and printed it…
*rolls eyes* The FN site is SOOOOO user friendly.
Oooo, has anyone tried the tandoor oven? My friends just tell me to go to the Indian restaurant, but where’s the fun in that?
I just saw the new episode on porterhouse steaks. Using the charcoal chimney starter as a high powered broiler? Alton is a home cooking savant! I’ll be trying that one out this weekend…
Didn’t those steaks look yummy when he was done, too? Better than any $120 ones *I* ever saw…
I second the kitchen geek. Alton changed my world. Instead of blindly following recipes, despairing over substitute ingredients or mis-measuring, I can actually cook now. I know how to use ingredients, I know how to fix my mistakes, and I know how to be creative with my dishes now. I used to hate cooking, and now I really, really enjoy it. Alton got me hooked on FN, if for nothing else than to wait for him to appear. Kitchen-crush indeed. (He IS pretty sexy, though I liked him better with a little more meat on his bones.)
AB – you make a difference in this world, and this donation is just one more way. Thanks for being you!!
I totally agree with you. Alton shook up my cooking world. He was an inspiration to me in starting up my own cooking gadget business. So nice to hear he is just as cool off camera as on.
Wow!! That is amazing. Alton you are a class act!
I poked some fun at AB back in this site’s “drinking game” post but I’ll also admit to being a huge fan and think Good Eats is the best show -with the best and smartest and most funny host – on the network.
Alton Brown is absolutely a class act. What a way to show his sense of humor and realize that satire is just that, satire. It’s always a great thing to be able to laugh at oneself. Though I’m sure he more than gets a kick out of laughing at the other chefs on FN. Shame on Tyler Florence for being such a stick in the mud. My opinion of him has lowered considerably.
Kudos to AB, you’re the one show worth watching because even if I’m not interested in the ingredients, I like the info. Who knew, besides you, that the obelisk in St Mark’s Sq was transported in a bed of lentils? Love your show, hope you read this.
Once again, Alton shows what a total class act he is, compared to so many of the other FN hosts who take themselves WAY too seriously….LOVE THIS !!!
Alton is one of the few people on the food network who actually know about food, so it’s great to see he actually knows it’s all in good fun too. Some of these people take themselves too seriously. Alton is the man!
Agree with all about Alton, darn nice guy and has a sense of humor.
Would love to know how FNH ‘harassed’ TyFlo, commented on his spelling? Tyler is the Ultimate Himbo (female bimbo).
Alton you are awesome!
Have been “just a lurker” on this site for months, but have to step up and congrat AB on having the cojones to call sarcasm and a joke just that and roll with it. I love to get my geek on. Love ya, AB!
. . .and just for that, I’m making a “Tribute to AB” dinner tonight. Maybe some Burger of the Gods and Mac and Cheese. . .
Always have credited AB with being the best of the best of all FN personalities, exec’s and staff I’ve met. (quite a few) Such a sense of humor, humility, confidence without arrogance. Admirable!
Alton rules!!
FNH is truly grateful to everyone who helps pay the web site maintenance around here, Alton included. Jill has some new features in the works, as well as our upcoming podcast this summer. Hopefully the community will just keep growing (being a bit selfish here, but I love reading the hilarious comments from you all.)
Let the food network financial throwdown begin!
This is just TOO COOL! Thanks for supporting the site, Alton!
Very cool thing for Alton to do.
First they buy Cooking Channel Humor, then one of their best hosts (who am I kidding, THE best) donates to FNH.
Just another example to show that you have truly made it.
To Jillian & Alton: you both rock.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I knew I liked Alton for a reason! This is great Jillian!
Um… I just had a HORRIFYING thought. What happens if Guy is the next host to donate???? Does this mean we will be forced to be at least sort of nice about him?
I would politely thank him… and then resume the usually mockery!
My husband wondered that, because, in his words, “they really reef on him over there.” It would take a large man to swallow what we’ve said about him (in most cases, I think his image has borne us out). I have to admit, my opinion of him would change–a LITTLE, anyway. But would he?
If he didn’t even help out Michael Irvine, then I highly doubt he’d donate anything.
Nope. A simple thank-you is all that is required. :)
Maybe Anthony Bourdain will donate using his Chase Sapphire card?
I just burst out laughing when I read your comment. Which is totally awesome, except I’m at work (and obviously not doing much work).
Ditto….I laughed out loud, too!
First off, verrrry cool of AB…kudos for keepin’ it real.
Second, what’s up with that pic? It looks like “Thing” is holding up the phone to his ear…either that or he has leprosy and is rotting from the arm first!
That could be…I just love that he even HAS “Thing” on his show–it’s a wonderful reference and so funny!
I commend Alton for doing this after foodnetwork went out of their way to buy cookingchannelhumor.com, it’s clear the folks at FN are threatened by you girls here, even though some of their own on air personalities like Paula and Alton are fans of the site.
Although I don’t care much for Alton’s cooking, I find it too complex for my simple 5 ingredient fix mind, I have to respect that he is totally down to earth and has a great sense of humor. In a world where so many celebrities are full of themselves and the ass-kissing garbage on the internet, to find one as humble as Alton (and even Pauler) it’s a real treat for us watching in the background.
Cheers Alton! Maybe one day I will be able to master one of your complicated recipes.
Uh, that is really uh, quite awesome uh Jillian! Uh… thank you!
I really hate what the foodnetwork has become, a bunch of people standing around in parking lots while Guy Fieri screams in their faces and squirts mustard at the camera screen. Alton is one of the few real chefs and food gods left on the channel, so to hear he is as funny off camera as he is on (I do love good eats to this day) is really encouraging. Maybe Alton is a lot like us, maybe he too hates what has become of the foodnetwork, or at the very least thinks a little ribbing never did any harm. Kudos Mr. Brown
I have noticed that, why is Guy constantly squirting things at us? Mustard, ketchup, slamma-jamma-big-alabama chicken taco sauce — he needs a new angle.
Go AB! I’m still not weighing every damn ingredient when I bake though!
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ina donated. I have a feeling she’s hiding a wicked sense of humor underneath that shent.
She seems like she has a good sense of humor… but also seems like the kind who would make an anonymous donation if she gave anything.
4 words.
Alton Brown for President!
That would be so amazing…
They wouldn’t need a White House chef, that’s for sure…
That is just wonderful! :D On behalf of my boyfriend and I we love you Alton!
Love the site changes and love AB! Very cool, that fellow. :)
all i have to say is that this is crazy awesome!
AB is awesome! It’ll be interesting to see if any of the other FN stars take up the challenge!
I sort of doubt they will, actually. That requires a level of coolness I don’t think they possess.
Alton, you kick ass!
Can you feel the Alton love? This has got to be the best $100 the man ever spent!
I wish Alton Brown was my Dad.
Alton is such a rebel! Loving this.
A class move by Mr. Brown!
Alton is the reason I love to cook, I owe him more than he could ever know. Good Eats was the show that got me into cooking because once I realized cooking was science, I found out I could do it!! Thanks AB, you blinded me with science!
My 7-year-old daughter wants to be a chef when she grows up, and her hero is Alton Brown. She is watching “Good Eats” as I type this, “Apple of My Pie”, I believe (one of her all-time favorites). Watching “Good Eats” is one of her rewards. When she was five, FIVE mind you, she got a baking set for Christmas that said on the tag, “From Santa Claus with help from Alton Brown,” and she was THRILLED. How many 5-year-olds know who he is? My other daughter picks out Tinkerbell books; she picks out cookbooks at the bookstore. That girl has a jones on for cooking, and guess who gave it to her?
My daughter is the same way. She can’t get enough of Alton and has since become a real food science geek. She knows more than Ted Allen!
Oooh–just upped the ante! Donating to a satire site that regularly makes fun of you is one thing, but how classless do you have to be to refuse to give to a charity that feeds the hungry?
actually, Alton rarely gets made fun of on this site because he knows his stuff!
I love the added fact not only did he donate, but Alton called out his fellow FN personalities! After listening to his little radio rant I feel like he wants to separate himself from the Sandra Lee and Guy Fieri’s who have taken over the spotlight. I don’t blame him.
Good luck getting the other hosts to donate to your hosting fees, Alton might just be the last real human not in love with himself over at the FN.
Jillian, you must promise to let us know if you receive any $$ from other FN peeps. Trying not to hold..my..breath. But it would be so cool if another decided to join Alton and support humor!!
I don’t often miss Alton’s show “Good Eats” – even the reruns. He is a real class act! Usually I even watch him on Iron Chef except I don’t watch the beginning or the end. AB is WAAAAY too good to play second fiddle to that phony “Chairman.” If I miss the first and last 5 minutes of Iron Chef, I can get a dose of AB without the silk shirts, flips, sound effects with the looks, goofy questions and the chairman’s screaming. “And that’s o.k. by me.”
I swear I’m going to miss the Chairman’s self-induced heart attack one of these days during my bout of giggling! I can’t help it–there’s just something about his bug eyes and deadly serious pun-laced questions that make me burst out laughing…
Sorry, Sara. He doesn’t affect me that way at all. He needs to go back where he came from. Nothing about discrimination at all – just can’t stand the jerk.
Sorry Sandy can’t notice right now because she is having another mole removed from her chest.
(notice-> donate) typo
Of course Alton likes your site. He is one of the few people from FN that really doesn’t get made fun of on here! He has a fantastic show that actually teaches people about food! He’s very knowledgeable and doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. You go Alton..we all love you! Just can’t say that about anyone else over at Food Network!
I would also just like to tell fatty, I mean Tyler Florence to chill out a little! What a pompous ass he is!
Kross – Be nice… we love humor, but not mean kids!
Alton Brown’s show is the only program I watch on the FNC.
Very cool of him for the donation!
That’s so cool. I keep asking for Alton’s cookbooks for various holidays (birthday, christmas, arbor day, etc) but no one think I actually want to cook.
Most definitely my favorite food network host, aside from Giada’s kickin’ rack.
Um…”thinks?” Good lord.
mog… see my message to Kross… we are all trying to play nicely in the sandbox that Jillian has provided…
I’ll have to remember this when I correct myself.
GO Skalton GO! Woohoo!
Ditto some of the others… Alton Brown and Good Eats had a huge impact on my love for cooking. I’ve been in love with him for years!
Thanks, Alton!! You’re rad!
Alton’s surrounded by bubble-headed, fake, lame non-cooks. Touschman’s vision is easy-cooking for idiots. Alton is the last of ‘the best’. Maybe he needs a way out of whatever contract they’re holding to.
Here, here!!
Alton is truly a cool guy and has a warped sense of humor. It’s great that he donated to the site. As to the other hosts I predict they might donate items to be auctioned off: Guy might donate a sweaty armband with spots from Hodad’s owner’s own greasy sweat; Aunt Sandy a leftover single silk purple-pink carnation from a 2006 tablescape disaster. The Neelys will probably just donate sexually infused innuendos…
Alton, You da man!
AWESOME!
What a great gesture.
Being able to laugh at yourself makes a guy REALLY attractive to women
(well, this woman….)
Me too!
Love Alton for this glad to see he can take a joke, but I know one person who can’t.
Poor little Lisa at the All About Alton Blog is all weepy that Alton love FNH more than her he “broke her heart”. She is also mad that FNH “riped on her just for being his fan”, going back to a comment that he remembered to lock his doors after seeing her. This from the post about the New York Times and the gag inducing Rock Star Chef piece. Now she doesn’t even know if she can keep her blog going.
Poor Lisa. She should get a life that doesn’t include Alton. Many people have told her so in her Comments section, but she just doesn’t seem to hear it. She may have a degree in journalism, but journalists don’t get “devastasted” by their subjects. She’s way too involved.
Yeah, I saw that too. As far as I’m concerned, Lisa can write whatever she wants to in her blog. She can recite Mary Had a Little Lamb or the lyrics to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath if she wants. It’s her blog, ya know? Who are we to say what she can and can’t write. And if she had to deal with some disappointment (real or imagined) by writing about it, good on ‘er.
But I’ll admit her reaction surprised me. AB has snarked plenty in his days, and his support of this site seems pretty much in line with his character, particularly by stabbing a Skaltony finger at his colleagues. Guess I sorta thought Lisa would have seen it that way too. Maybe she will. :-)
I agree she is way to involved. I have a feeling that she is going to end up going the way of the Rachael Ray Sux livejournal group admin. Basing her whole life around or at least her free time around a personality that barely knows she is even on the planet will always leave her empty.
FNH got $100 because they do something, Lisa on the other hand just reports on things that you can find all over the internet, and spews love for Alton, two things that are not that special.
I TOTALLY agree John
After all, we all spew love for Alton and never received anything for it! :)-
It’s obvious to me that the two posters above are part of the unfortunate majority who believe that just because someone speaks from the heart, they are a lesser person.
I guess some schoolyard bullies never grow up, and that is very sad.
I’ll occasionally watch Alton’s shows, and learn at lot.
While it is cool that he did this, I can’t understand what place a post has mocking someone who disagrees with that decision.
Isn’t that kind of OT of the post?
Pointing out someone’s obviously severe issues is not “schoolyard bullying,” it’s common sense. The woman needs help. Specifically, the kind of help that involves an intervention and psychological therapy.
Unless you know the person yourself, what qualifies you to make that kind of assumption?
You are entitled to your opinion, and I was expressing mine.
BTW, I also feel that people who enjoy tearing other people down for no good reason are truly the ones who need ‘help, and interventions’
I was not tearing her down in the slightest. Point out to me where I was insulting this woman. There is nothing weak about getting therapy. Having been a recipient of several kinds of therapy for many different mental illnesses, I believe it would genuinely help her with her obsession. Her blog is a bit creepy and shows some flickers of sickness that there exists help for.
When you put yourself and your personal feelings on the internet, that means it is open for mockery, criticism, praise, or whatever else. If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
It’s so funny that you consider her blog creepy, when in reality, this blog, one that rips apart celebrities and is openly cruel and vicious is the creepiest blog of them all.
Then why are you reading this blog, Jordan dear?
I am sure it was not prescribed reading by your mental health specialist…..
Actually, my mental health specialist told me today that this site is run by, and read by, idle people who possess half a brain.
And you say WE’RE insulting…
@Jordan
Let’s be nice, shall we??
To John-I may be new to this discussion, but can you please tell me where else I could find footage of Alton at the James Beard Awards besides Lisa’s blog. Thank you.
Wow, thanks Alton!!
We should all erupt in a chorus of ‘you rock, alton!’ just like in the good eats commercial.
ready…?
“YOU ROCK, ALTON!”
YOU ROCK, ALTON!
YOU ROCK, ALTON!
[add me to the chorus!!]
YOU ROCK, ALTON!!!!
This is so cool. Really. I really wonder is Sandra has ever seen this site… I would love to see the look on her face. I would imagine her head would pop off.
Tyler really threatened to sue?! OMG how pretentious! Not cool, have to be able to laugh at yourself.
M
On what grounds, exactly? So far as I know, being offended is not actionable, even if you’re Tyler Florence!
Brilliant! So nice to see these Food Network personalities can a) take a joke, and b) take a minute to support the online food community. What up AB! Props.
That is freaking awesome!
Outstanding Mr. Brown, absolutely outstanding!
I’m pretty sure he only gave FNH money because he hates Aunt Sandy as much as we do.
He he he. And perhaps he’s sick of people repeating food myths that he has disproved, like if you wash your mushrooms they’ll soak up a bunch of water and be ruined! That DRIVES ME CRAZY.
Oh–and you have to sear meat to seal in the juices! Don’t forget that one–dunno where it started, but it’s got legs!
Now every time I see her, I think of him saying, “Semi-sane, semi-out of her freakin’ mind!”
Alton, you rock!!! You’ve always been my favorite person on Food Network and this makes me like you even more. Thanks for your awesome sense of humor — on TV and here!
nice Jill,
he is the only class act on FN…excellent story telling, and cinematography as well.
cant wait to see if anyone else donates
It’s easy for him to not hate the site since he’s easily the most popular FN host they have. Even non-food fiends love the guy. He gets his share of being made fun of, but it’s nothing like the idiots get.
Of course, he’s responsible for that for having great content and not making Kwanzaa cakes.
If Alton Brown made a Kwanzaa cake, I would probably die. (and NOT out of happiness)
Alton is the only FN show that I can actually watch all the way through these days. We were at Bed, Bath and Beyond a while back looking at pasta maker attachments for the Kitchen Aid and some other stuff, and I heard myself say (about something, though I can’t remember what now) “No way man, it’s a total uni-tasker!”
My husband always pulls the “will this be a unitasker” question on me…
That’s funny, my boyfriend always pops the “will this be a unitasker” question with me too.
Alton Brown is awesome. That’s pretty cool that he did that! I love his show and always try to catch it! My boyfriend hates that I watch food network all the time but he never complains when Good Eats is on or pretty much anything Alton Brown is on.
This just proves how smart Alton really is. If the other hosts can’t acknowledge that what they do ranges from campy to utterly ridiculous (juicy cupcakes?), their loss.
Alton is my god :-)
He’s blinded us with food science.
Thread over. Best reply ever.
Alton Brown’s ‘Good Eats” is about the only FN show I’ll watch with any seriousness. He keeps it interesting. Good to see he can take a joke as well. Classy!
Hey, Alton. You’re awesome!
You know, it’s nice to see that someone can read this site, laugh at themselves, and still wants to see it keep going. Alton rocks, and, for the rest of the Foodnetwork gang, lighten up (you too Tyler), and enjoy the site. We all do things that make people laugh, annoy them, or whatever, and y’all ain’t no different. I watch Foodnetwork all the time, and even when FNH gets one of my favorites, the Barefoot Contessa, I have to admit, IT’S TRUE – she loves using “good” everything, the same gay guys keep showing up, and her smocks looks, well, smockish. It’s all in good fun. So Alton, thanks for being such a good sport, and FHN, keep it up. Love it!
Just when I thought Alton Brown couldn’t get any cooler (in his own geeky sort of way) he goes and proves he has a great sense of humor. Alton Brown you are a class act.
As for TyFlo, he seriously threatened to sue you for harassment? Whoa Tyler, a website poking rather gentle fun at you isn’t harassment.
Good Eats is the ONLY actual food show on FN. The ONLY one. I remember watching Sarah Moulton talking about an ingredient and trying to explain why it was necessary to teh recipe. She just said “oh, just put it in because I said so”, or something along those lines. I remember thinking “Alton would tell us WHY we need that ingredient!” In order to learn, I must know the “why”.
AB, you’re a mensch! Class, brains, daring, and sense of humor!
Jillian, according to the Tyler Florence archives you haven’t made a posting about him since August of last year. Did the asshat’s threat really intimidate you that much? Just curious.
Kudos and thanks to Mr. Brown–a true class act!
He is a totally stand up guy and a true man!
Tyler Florence threatened to sue you ? What a fuckin goof downer.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the hot wind this fat fuck blows. He doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
Alton is so rad. That is amazing.
Alton is the only guy whose receipes I’ve ever actually had WORK (that would be the turkey recipe and a couple of others).
Glad to know the guy can take a joke or three. He’s awesome.
I did his method of brining (for the turkey). Definately awesome – turkey came out perfect.
Wow! Alton Brown rocks! Good on ya man
Alton is one of two FN chefs I enjoy…..I actually learn something from his show. Thanks, Alton, for being authentic, real, and all together wonderful!
Rock on Alton!!!
I KNEW there was a reason he was my favorite FN chef….
Alton rocks!
Thank you Alton. I love Good Eats and have gotten some really tasty recipes from it. His Swiss Steak is awesome. Alton and Good Eats rock.
Just watched his radio interview thing for the first time. Alton, you don’t look too skinny anymore, you look just right. What an amazing guy!
No doubt my favourite FN personality! Go Alton! :D
I want to drizzle this man with butter and give him love squeezins!
Paula! Is that you?!?!
This comment FTW!
Have any of the other FN hosts donated yet?
I have it on pretty good authority that Claire Robinson reads this website… Good authority being she’s the one who told me to start visiting Food Network Humor. The impression I got is she loves it ; )
:O
I really hope that when Alton does retire (because if he ever gets cancelled may hell swallow up the ones who do it) he writes a tell all book about the Food Network and its Chefs.
And even if it isnt Alton, I want someone to do it. If at least I can just know what was going on to make Food Network higher the lowest of the low.
OMG that would be amazing!!
I don’t think he would. I think he’s too much of a gentleman.
Alton, props.
Jillian, does his pledge float like ducks and small rocks?
Oh man! A tell all book by Alton himself! That is a book I’d even pay full hardcover price for, instead of getting it at a library, or waiting for the paperback like I usually do.
Just so all of you know, there’s a new Good Eats Episode Tonight-at 8:30 EST. It’s called “Porterhouse Rules”–a play on the John Updike Title, I’m sure.
Love the way he references stuff like that. I’ve been watching his show for years, and the first time he referenced Shakespeare, he’d gained a fan for life! Tune in if you can!
Once again, AB has not led me wrong. Followed his instructions for dry aging 2+ lb Porterhouses for Father’s Day. Never want to have plain steaks again although now I have to plan 4 days in advance – but so worth it.
Ooops, John Irving wrote that, not Updike.
I Heart Alton!
Alton proves how awesome he is, again! Thanks!
alton was already my favourite fn host, so i guess now he’s my most favourite…est?

the all-about-alton blog reference.
she definitely seems hurt that altons finds your site more interesting than hers – and that you got a response from him where she failed. but i also think this may speak to all-about-alton not knowing AB. maybe AB doesn’t want to idol worship, and wants to get joked at and made fun of. he seems to have a good sense of humor (particularly to us nerdy types).
or maybe he just thinks JillMad is more attractive than Lisa….
Alton Brown is my food hero. If it wasn’t for him, I never would have started cooking. Even though he is married and old enough to be my dad, I most definitely have a crush on him.
Just had to comment on this one. alton is everyone’s fav. Your site makes me laugh outloud every time i visit. I hope to be half as good as this site when ” I grow up with my site”. I am a beginner blogger. even though I have been unemployed for quite some time, your site is so cool I am making a donation, a small one. You are appreciated by me.
Alton Brown is a god to me. Every single one of his recipes is fantastic, he’s entertaining and intelligent. Now that I’ve read this, I am madly in love with him. What a cool person he is!
Oh man, I really could not love this guy any more than I already do. Smart, funny, handsome, AND a sense of humor? Don Draper better watch his back.
Alton Brown is the Chuck Norris of Food…
