VIDEO: Guy Fieri Now Shilling For Aflac
Posted on August 16th 2010 by Jillian Madison

It’s official: the two most obnoxious things on television, Guy Fieri and the Aflac duck, finally paired up and make a commercial together. Although this video plays like an FNH parody or a SNL skit, sadly, it’s completely real.

HAHAHA! A lame, unfunny video with a middle-aged toolbag harassing an injured duck! That makes me want to switch insurance companies immediately!

Not surprisingly, the campaign seems to be bombing already. At the time of this posting, the video had a paltry 1,100 views on YouTube – hardly the “viral” response the company likely expected out of Fieri.  What the hell was Aflac thinking? Fieri is the world’s worst insurance pitchman! He doesn’t  conjure up feelings of “safety” or “protection.” His bracelets alone scream “ignorance” and “haphazardness.”

His spiky hair, however, screams “Lesbian chic circa 1992.”

Good luck with that, Fieri. Let us know how it works out.

At least I know now which insurance company I WON’T choose.

Yikes, this is really bad. And the timing of this commercial doesn’t make sense to me. It features a summertime cookout, yet the summer is nearly over. It would have made more sense to release this commercial at the beginning of summer. On second thought, it would have made more sense to never release this commercial!

    • sopa says:

I was going to comment that it would have made the best sense not to release the commercial in the first place..but reading further down I see we are like minded in the commentary. what a train-wreck.

  3. BOO says:

OMG! And, help me sweet Jesus.

  4. Ray says:

Ah, the CGI AFLAC duck. That’s a new low when you have to share time in a commercial with an annoying, plastic, clearly fake, artificially-manufactured cohort which has overstayed its welcome by a good number of years now.

    Poor duckie.

  5. Jim says:

When I read “His spiky hair, however, screams “Lesbian chic circa 1992.” I thought of Elizabeth Falkner.

  6. cloverleaf says:

Yeah, Quackie…..it’s “winner winner chicken dinner” not “duckie duckie me suckie” :)

  7. It is a funny commercial.

And how it’s working for him; I imagine quite well, I’m sure he got paid handsomely. He’s the one laughing, not us.

    • Actually, I disagree. The commercial is totally bombing, and the public response has been not just poor – but embarrassingly underwhelming. Companies in the future will be 100x less likely to hire him as a result.

We are the ones laughing yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

      • Chris says:

BRAVO Jillian! Way to see the BIG picture. Maybe this little ditty will be the downfall of the Douchebag! (fingers crossed)

      • Ray says:

@Chris : One can only hope. I mean, the Ferry Train has to run out of steam sometime soon, right? Sadly I have the uneasy feeling it won’t be before we see Guy Ferry: The Movie.

As far as this campaign goes, I tend to wonder about the efficacy of having him in a commercial, period. Is he that well known to the populace at large? Maybe the lack of views, as Jillian indicates, answers this question already. Or not.

    • And I gotta add, this post doesn’t even have a whiff of humor to it; more akin to a personal attack.

Seems like quite the grasp at making a story from a non-story.

I like roasts as much as the next doofus, this, again, is just wicked name calling.

    • Minx says:

No it’s not funny. It’s embarrassingly lame. Some FN stars are more tolerable than others, but I think Fieri is the standard for a true awfulness that is ripe for parody. He was made for FNH to skewer, often and with gusto.

    • byrdie says:

I thought it was funny too, Dank. Not because doucheboy was in it but because, as usual, the duck got f..well, you know.

And Dave, I see you’re still your sweet loveable self. ugh.

    • BmoreFoodie says:

Hooray for American small-mindedness, intolerance and envy.

I’m pretty sure Guy isn’t too worried about his financial future, even if the commercial is pretty lame. Anyone with a calculator should be able to figure THAT out…sour grapes, anyone?

  8. Lana says:

The only thing more lame than the commercial are Fieri’s sponsored tweets. Wonder how much he’s getting paid for those, hmmm?

  9. WalterSobchak says:

Dank Dillweed sounds like a screen name Guy “Fetty” would pick doesn’t it???

  10. Teague says:

Very unfunny. (even has a sick sadistic thing going on.)

I did however get a hugh kick out of the irony of the opening like. The chubby middle aged guy with spiked hair sunglasses…(you know what Ferry is all about I don’t need to describe him.) calling someone else out for trying to get attention.

  11. fxtech says:

Hmmm… Lets seee… Tomorrow morning to do list…

1 – get out of bed
    2 – get dressed
    3 – cancel insurance policy

  12. GreenJeans says:

    Sad and unfunny.

  13. Diane says:

WTF?! WHY do people keep hiring this douche?

  14. lone_shark says:

The Aflac Duck meets the Laughed-at Fuck.

  15. Di says:

    How humiliating for the duck.
I know the duck is cartoon-ish, but Guy’s not going to win friends by laughing at some animal’s pain.
    Bad idea.
Now if the duck could have pooped on Guy’s head – that would be funny.

  16. Scruffy says:

Dear baby Jesus in the manger, please, for the love of your dad, if we have to be subjected to that tool on mainstream television, tell him to either lose the shades or wear them like a NORMAL FUCKING PERSON!

  17. Lisa says:

this makes me want to cry.

  18. Spatuler says:

Too bad Evil Kenevil isn’t around to pitch Aflac’s motorcycle insurance division. FAIL.

  19. Camille says:

Just played during Bourdain. Poochie needs to go away.

  20. Camille says:

Just played during Bourdain. Poochie needs to go away.

  21. Minx says:

Ugh, just saw this on FN. Looks and sounds even worse in HD.

  22. Drew says:

aaaaaa. i emailed you about this and hadn’t gone to the website today yet.

  23. Daniel says:

I was just watching some classic good eats, and paused between episodes to check the blog and saw this. Im regretting that decision.

  24. Dot says:

Aflac was stupid for hiring Guy. But I can’t hate the duck. Can’t really hate Aflac, either. I’ve been to the Aflac Cancer Center (and BDS) Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and it’s very nice. One of my friends had to take her son there for a good while, and she said nothing but good things. /cool story bro

Every time I see Guy and his bad facial hair I question what woman married him and had offspring with him. Guh.

  25. Jisha says:

    Oh My God.
There were times when I felt FNH was being a little mean to Guy… but he so totally deserves it for this ad. This ad should never have been made. And the now 2k+ views … FNH definitely contributed so I hope Guy sends you a Thank You card.

    • SaraCVT says:

My husband and I had a conversation about Guy the other day that sort of blew my mind. He thinks that Guy is basically an okay dude and “it’s amazing the amount of venom you guys have out for him”. When I said that one (ONE!) of the things I couldn’t stand about him was the whole trying-to-recapture-his-youth-and-obviously-not-succeeding look he has going, my husband said that it is all because he is at the age of mid-life crisis. Even though he’s been doing this for years, apparently this works for my husband. Ultimately, my husband told me that Guy’s whole persona is “a guy thing and you’re never going to get it, so don’t even try.” He says that Guy appeals to non-foodie guys who wouldn’t watch FN otherwise. Men, is this really true? Is this Guy’s appeal? It may explain something which has mystified me for a long time–who in the heck his audience is. But I still don’t understand how people (like my husband) can enjoy both Guy and Alton Brown. That seems oxymoronic to me.

      • BOO says:

Sara, is your husband a college frat boy? LOL!

      • FoodNetworkSnark says:

        My husband likes him too.

Then again, he hit his head REALLY hard and was hospitalized while he was in the Air Force so I imagine that has something to do with it…..

      • Ferd Berfle says:

My husband is older than Guy and never once felt the mid-life crisis-inspired urge to grow chin pubes and dye them, let alone bleach and spike his hair, wear sunglasses backwards, get stupid tattoos or dress like an imbecile. To each his own!

      • Mark H88 says:

Guy’s “self absorbed love of himself” is what annoys the hell out of me. I saw the special on his Road Show and it angered me even more because he acts like he’s a rock star, which he isn’t. The only reason he gets away with it is because the people that went to see the show, were even lamer than he is, so they played into the whole “he’s a rock star” mentality.

No man should find anything appealing about Guy. I don’t hate him, but I do wish he would knock off the “I’m so awesome and bad-ass” attitude because you know it’s all an act.

The reason he gets away with it, is because the rest of the Food Network is so lame by comparison. Sure, ANYONE can look like a bad-ass in a nursing home!!!! But put Guy into any real bad-ass situation and he’d be lamer than a French Horn player at a Slayer concert.

      • SaraCVT says:

No, he’s not a college frat boy (thank God!) and I had NO idea he even knew who Guy was until this conversation. Weird, huh?

  26. Jen says:

Almost fell over when I saw that ad during Unwrapped last night. What a combo worthy of the mute button imo.

    • Jen says:

And jmo but I think Guy might be a nice guy irl but I think somebody from the network tells him to push the envelope personality wise. It just seems too big of a coincidence to see Rachel Ray, Paula Deen and Guy and the way they act. Rachel used to annoy the hell out of me but she seems a lot more tolerable now that she isn’t on the network as much. She calmed down imo. Paula’s as obnoxious as ever and I’m just tired of seeing Guy all over the network. I get the feeling he’d follow Rachel’s path and become less annoying once he branched away from the network. He’s still on the network in a heavy way so you’re gonna keep seeing the bold DDD personality on everything he does.

      • Northwester says:

I also sense there might be a decent human being under that incredibly lame and annoying “Poochie” persona. Mainly because there are some moments on DD&D when he seems to have some genuine rapport with the diner cooks and appreciation for what they’re doing. At those moments a real person peeks out from under the manufactured image. And if you remember back to his NFNS days, he was relatively restrained. I think you’re right that the geniuses at FN pushed him to become a cartoon, because they think over-the-top sells. Like with RR and Paula Dean. RR also got a lot more obnoxious after they promoted the hell out of her. On the original $40 a Day shows she actually had an appealing personality. So maybe it’s the idiots running FN who are to blame. Not that Guy wasn’t happy to go along with whatever he thought would make him the most money.

  27. ladycrim says:

I saw that ad last night and just shuddered in terror.

  28. Monica says:

Not this douche again. Get off my TV

  29. Nyaaaah says:

You know, I think that’s the first time anyone in the commercial has acknowledged the existence of the duck. I’ve got to at least give the commercial that.

  30. Michael says:

I’d watch but I’m pretty sure that as I lay on my death bed, I’m going to want those 31 seconds so I’ll pass.

  31. melange e'foie says:

Seriously? The brain trust that came up with this ad (and spokes-bloke) should be fired.

  32. sopa says:

Holy shit! This is just all kinds of wrong! I think it is a bit of a stretch for him to “shill” for an insurance company. really now. His talents are cooking and acting like a loveable jack-ass. So why the diversion? As if “in it to win it” isn’t bad enough….

  33. Suzi says:

    I think its funny.

  34. Poofballs says:

Can someone explain why that was so funny to me? Thanks for posting.

  35. Brian says:

Guys its not so much of the humor or the people in the commericial. I think most of you can agree that you have no idea what Aflac does as a company. The first few years of the duck campaign was designed to make the Aflac name a household commmon, and it has worked. 9 out of 10 Americans now know the name “Aflac”. But how many of those same people know what Aflac does as an insurance company. Its the message that is key in this particular ad. Whether you like Guy or not, realize that the company is just trying to get the awareness out that they are a Supplimental Insurance company, something that is becoming more and more important each day in this world. We are forced as consumers to insure almost everything in our lives, Aflac sees the potiential for disaster when an accident or illness happens by paying the policy holder – not the doctors. Lets be honest, if something happens the majority of us would lose the income needed to sustain our bills and life. All Aflac is doing is taking their next step in a awareness of their company.

So stop roasting the douche bags and start looking at the facts behind something first.

  36. I really love your shows Guy. When I saw the Aflac commercial I laughted so hard I couldn’t believe it. Usually I turn the channel until the comercial is off, but I thought your comercial was so funny. GET UP ITS CHICKEN. Now I’m saying that all the time and every time I see the concerial I still crack up. Everyone need a laugh once in a while! You did great!!!

  37. Jonathan Doan says:

Can’t believe they paid him for that. He was TERRIBLE!!

  38. Your Name jane says:

this is the funniest thing i’ve seen on t.v. I drop everything when it comes on to see it.
