Did TV Guide Reveal The Winner Of “Next Iron Chef?”
Posted on December 14th 2011 by Jillian Madison

Is this an epic fail on TV Guide’s part or just generic usage of a masculine pronoun? Have I been wrong all this time with my prediction a woman would become the Next Iron Chef? Looks like we’re going to have to tune in Sunday night to find out!

(Thanks for submitting this, Jason! Here’s the original link.)

:O Hope! A tiny flicker of hope, burning bright in one solitary word! O glory!

  2. Kate says:

Amen and hallelujah Christmas comes early for this Iron Silver Fox groupie! I saw this on ONTD last night and whooped so loud I woke the neighbor’s dogs.

  3. Justin says:

It seems that every new season of a “challenge” based series brings about new problems for the Food Network. They should re-look their priorities, and the information they reveal to other sources. Let’s go GEOFFERY!

  4. Kelli says:

    Christmas has come early!

  5. Colleen says:

They both stink. Anne or Alex should have been the winner. I’m not sure I’ll even watch the finale.

    • misty j says:

Elizabeth Faulkner did not lose to that Chef from New York because
she was out cooked. She lost because Iron Chef America is a
show that discriminates against women. One woman judge
out of all those men and the only reason Cat Cora is an Iron
Chef is because she was asked to be one. If she had to compete
in a “man’s world” She would not be one either.

I am no longer watching and I am boycotting and protesting
against Iron Chef America. We never see any of the last 2 Chef
do battle. Garces and Forgione are hardly ever on.

      • dreamer2012 says:

I agree totally with your comments Misty. It stinks! Iron Chef is male dominated and biased and this last show really showed it.

  6. Ball Peen says:

We still don’t know. GS would be the most arrogant, fun to hate Iron Chef. Maybe he will throw a few fits. Great fun to see how he acts when he looses.

  7. Come to think of it, when is the last time you saw GZ as a judge on this season’s Chopped?

    • LAURA says:

Oh shoot, didn’t even think of that. Lord, please don’t let Falkner win. Anne Burrell should’ve won.

    • Kate says:

The seasons of Chopped all run together for me since FN shows like 22 in a row now, and 9 times out 10 if I don’t see GZ at the judge’s desk l in the first pan of the camera, I switch off.

Has Alex G been a judge so far this season? NIC was filmed in early spring so they both would have been out.

  8. First Gypsy says:

If this is true, then I definitely look forward to seeing the look on Zakarian’s face on future Iron Chef episodes, when Jeffrey Steingarten snipes at his dishes!

    • Gypsy says:

Oh, man, I would pay good money (like what I pay for cable in the first place) to see Steingarten go word for word against Zakarian. Steingarten is like my hero. The snarkiest judge EVER!

      • Michele says:

Steingarten hasn’t been on to judge since Iron Chef DooDoo Brown won a couple of seasons ago. I think even he gave up on the ridiculousness of letting that guy call himself an iron chef.

  9. hockeymom2 says:

“His” could also mean Faulker too.

  10. LauraS says:

So much for my hope that Kitchen Stadium burns down and everybody but Alton Brown perishes.

  11. amy says:

    THERE’S HOOOPE.

  12. orchidgal says:

FN just can’t keep a secret, can they? Good thing they are not in charge of National Security or we’d all be screwed.

  13. Sandy's food designer says:

Ha! Tv guide beat FN to the punch! FN always prematurely reveals this kind of stuff

  14. LauraS says:

I’m still curious what the fan poll will mean in the end, the chefs really push for it on twitter (reminds me, I need to get my votes in for Anne yet today). There’s also a redemption thing on Facebook (Anne’s killing in that). Wonder what that’ll be about?

  15. Kahless says:

If this is true it will have made my week. I love the pomp GZ brings about. Anne should have won but this is almost as nice.

  16. COUSIN OLIVER says:

I totally would be happy if he beat Susan in the final. Like most, I would have preferred Anne or Alex to win, but he’s won me over a lil’ bit this season, especially with the Hello Kitty finger bandages.

    • Lauren says:

Same here…I wanted Anne or Alex to win…but I have come to win to like Geoffrey a lot this season…I am definitely rooting for him over that Faulkner chick

  17. Paula Deen says:

How many times is it now that the FN has leaked something early? Those motherphuqing betches.

  18. sprode says:

    Dear hope:

Though I doubt, please let this be true.

    The end,

    PS: I miss Anne.

  19. Rayadragon says:

I’d say it’s pretty much a given that GZ will be the next Iron Chef.

If you watch the end of the last episode, where they’re showing the previews for next weeks finale, pay attention to the last bit where GZ and Falkner are standing in front of the covered portrat and the chairman does the “Next Iron Chef is…” spiel.

In a normal battle, the chairman steps backwards towards the loser, so he can bow to the winner of the battle. (For NIC, this would also make sure that he’s out of the way of any shot the cameramen take of the winner’s reaction). In that little preview segment, the chairman steps backwards towards Falkner, presumably so he can congratulate GZ.

(This worked for last season’s Forgione victory, I don’t remember for the previous ones).

  20. Cheffy says:

“his” can refer to both jeffy boo and faulking faulkner

  21. Toler Flyrence says:

If so, everytime he loses a battle, they should take one of his fireplaces.
I guess I wouldn’t mind watching hime compete. I also thought that if they brought in other IC’s to judge the final battle, they would never let a pastry chef win.
    Crossing my fingers…

    • FNFAN says:

My votes went in this order:

      1. Robert Irvine
      2. Alexandra Guarnaschelli
      3. Elizabeth Falkner
      4. Beau MacMillan
      5. Chuck Hughes
      6. Michael Chiarello
      7. Geoffrey Zakarian
      8. Marcus Samuelsson
      9. Spike Mendelsohn
      10. Anne Burell

  22. Cally says:

I’m okay with this. With Anne and Alex out, I’m in for GZ- I hate Faulkner. So. So. Much.

  23. Pam says:

The Faulkner hate is ridiculous. She is the only chef on the entire season to at least cook interesting food. Everyone else is sooooooooooooo boring. The top chef all stars cast would have blown these “superchefs” away.

    • amy says:

Are you kidding me? Falkner is the most boring chef in the whole show. She’s really awkward too.

    • jj says:

It’s not so much hate (on my part) as much as conviction that she’s really not all that good. I thought she should have been among the first three out, not one of the finalists. Heck, I haven’t been for either Zakarian OR Chiarello but I’d rather either of them be NIC than Faulkner; they just clearly have the ideas and the chops.

  24. nonamesue says:

Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but FN just aired a ‘vote for which Iron Chef contestant deserves a chance at redemption’ spot followed immediantly by Anne Burrell wishing you a happy holiday.

  25. Hunter says:

I’m confused. How is it that TV Guide would know or get to watch early, anyways? I must be outta the loop.

    • Viri says:

Just like they know the plot synapses of other shows that haven’t aired yet — this info is provided to TV Guide, TiVo, etc. They don’t “get to watch early”; the show was taped months ago and plenty of people have known the winner already, they just weren’t legally allowed to reveal it. Same thing happens with every weekly competition show like this.

  26. amy says:

I don’t get the point of voting for which chef deserves redemption. This isn’t American Idol or something, this was all taped months ago. Where are they going with this?

  27. So There says:

Hope Jeffrey wins even though he’s a pompous ass.
Falkner is a “cook” not a chef. She’s way out of her
league here. Anne or Alex really should have won.

  28. random person says:

The English language is masculine. This means nothing. The default is always he.

  29. Jen says:

I wouldn’t be concerned. Most writing styles that major publications follow allow “his” to be the pronoun of choice when the sex of the subject is unknown or not given.

Plus using “they” as the pronoun would have been grammatically incorrect.

Not to be the grammar nerd or anything… :)

    • Yeah, but they went out of their way to change it which is more than suspicious.

      • FoodieOne says:

I totally agree. If their concern was grammar or generic pronoun usage, they wouldn’t have bothered to change it.

At this point, I’d be downright shocked if Faulkner wins. Which makes me happy because she’s one of the most unappealing food personalities I’ve seen in a long time.

But, hey, this is Food Network! They’ll give her another show all her own!!

        • Mark H88 says:

I don’t think the change puts the blame more on it being a reveal.

Considering there have been dozens of news articles about them accidentally revealing the winner, I think that if it were a grammatical error (which i think it might be), they’d still update it .

p.s. What sucks is, even if he does win, it still doesn’t prove whether it was a grammatical error or accidental reveal.

  30. Kim says:

I was rooting for Anne or Alex all the way. Now, I’m pulling for Geoffrey. I know he’s arrogant, and I know this is hypocritical, but I find his arrogance somehow less annyoying than Falkner’s. Plus, I like his rather laconic style. I also think his creativity and skill has been superior throughout. He just seems more Iron Chef-worthy to me. Plus I always amused at how he generally disses the judges’ negative comments.

  31. Tom says:

    THEY CHANGED IT!!!

    Looks like Geoffrey won! Boo.

    • Your Namemillie inez says:

Congratulation!!!!!Geoffrey I knew you would win. I am a big fan. Love all the other Chefs. But I like the sound “Iron Chef Geoffrey Zacarian” You Go! Mr. Z. You deserve it! People are just “hating.”

  32. Vaca says:

I don’t know if I’m imagining things, especially since I didn’t even know about her until this, but it seemed like from that episode where they smacked at Falkner to ‘sell her food’ or whatever her head just seemed to get bigger and bigger. I think it was maybe the idea she had to be and look like an overconfident moron made her act like one, because in the beginning of the competition she seemed with-drawled and not nearly as obnoxious as she has become.

Or…maybe I’m just imagining things, like I said.

  33. Erik says:

Food Network really needs to get their act together, they’ve leaked the winner to pretty much everything. Still, I check this site every day and I wish you wouldn’t post spoilers in the first entry on the first page. Just say they leaked it and provide a link, then if I want to know I can go look, because now the episode is pretty much ruined. They shouldn’t leak it, but you don’t have to ruin it for everybody.

    • I think you’re overreacting a bit. This is not a definite spoiler. It’s pure conjecture.

    • Lime says:

      It’s not ruined.

Now you know who to laugh at while you watch.

    • Erik says:

I’m not angry about it, I was just suggesting. I knew it wasn’t going to be Falkner in my heart, mostly because you can’t make 5 ice creams and hope to win an Iron Chef battle. Just maybe a spoiler alert or something. It seemed innocuous until they changed it, but you of all people know that Food Network absolutely cannot let a show get to the end without accidentally leaking the winner. If there’s a “did they accidentally leak it?” moment, it’s pretty much guaranteed that they did. They leaked this, Aarti, and Jeff Mauro all in the last like 3 years.

  34. CityBoy says:

If it had to come down between these two, I am so hoping that Zakarian wins. I can’t stand him, he’s a pompous ass, but he’s a good chef. He’s got original ideas. He won’t make bagel ice cream.

    • ColK says:

I agree. While I can’t stand him, he can cook and he’s generally looked cool as a cucumber under pressure.

      • I also agree. I met GZ at the NYC Food & Wine festival last year. He was one of the chefs in the “Chopped” event at LandMarc – which included Alex, Chris Santos, Aaron Sanchez, Scott Conant, Marc Murphy, and Amanda Freitag. Geoffrey’s dish, Lamb TarTare, was the best dish by far. I had a good conversation with him, Aaron (whose Mother is from these parts), and Scott. I told Scott that I was going to Scarpetta the next evening and he was so pleased to hear that. It was the best event of the Festival!

  35. Anna says:

While is everyone hating on Faulkner so much? I mean i’m rooting for Zakarian but sheesh people. Alex was so obnoxious!

  36. SixDegrees says:

Ugh. I hate both of the finalists. I don’t watch IC as much as I used to, but I cannot bear the thought of watching Jeffrey’s pompous, swollen, Hampton-Vacations and Seven-Fireplace sized ego. FN is circling the drain.

  37. SixDegrees says:

I wish Alton Brown and Anne Burrell would bail on FN and start their own cooking channel.

  38. Jen says:

Just clicked on the link to tvguide.com, they’ve changed “his” to “their”. I think the bomb was dropped and Zakarian is the winner (to most of our dismay).

  39. Cathy323 says:

Even my 9-year old daughter (who is normally a calm kid, but screamed at the TV when Anne was voted off!) spotted the Faulkner/Joo lovefest. Whenever Judy speaks now, my daughter mocks her. Best thing about the end of this season is no more Juuuuuudy Jooooo!

  40. Goober says:

Geeee Zeeeee!!!! I like the dude’s style. I hear his house in St. Barts has 4 fireplaces, even though the temperature there never goes below 70 degrees.

    Falkner bores me to tears.

  41. Boke1 says:

They all need to lay off using the word “passion.” Passion this, passionate about that, the passion, my passion, I’m so passionate. Get these people a thesaurus so they can mix it up a little.

  42. Lotus says:

Well, it is official. Watching Iron Chef tonight and they showed a commercial for tomorrow nights Iron Chef competition, with YOU GUESSED IT, Zakarian competing. How can they do this EVERY YEAR?

  43. Mystrich says:

    Unfortunately, you were wrong. :|
