Paula Deen Has Type 2 Diabetes
![]() |

Last week, rumors started recirculating that Paula Deen had Type 2 diabetes, and that she was going to be teaming up with a drug company to promote their diabetes drug.
I didn’t post the gossip here on FNH. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I actually said to myself: “There is no way Paula Deen would do this. Surely even she must have her limits. Some morals. Some basic decency.”
I WAS WRONG.
In a Today Show interview thismorning, Paula Deen announced she’s had diabetes for years. She said she’s also teaming up with Novo Nordisk to promote their drug.
Paula Deen’s got her name on everything from cookware and hams to eyeglasses and mattresses, but this is ridiculous. To get rich promoting fried butter balls and Krispy Kreme donut burgers – and to continue doing so knowing you have diabetes – and then to get even richer promoting a diabetes drug – is a new low, even for the Deens.
Paula’s spent the morning giving quotes about the benefits of exercising, and posting “lighter” recipes on her Twitter page. Seriously? If Paula Deen thinks she can build an empire on fat people – and then simply snap a finger and try positioning herself as an authority on “lighter food”, girlfriend has another thing coming. She should use some of her money to buy herself a clue.
My phone and email inbox have been blowing up all morning with media outlets searching for quotes. I haven’t said anything to anyone.
For those of you looking for a quote, here’s one you can print:

In the future, when you ask me why I’m so cynical and jaded about the Food Network and celebrities in general, the answer is: “it’s shit like this.”

Have to agree with you Jill. What is she going to endorse next? Maybe Michael can get a Viagra deal, too,
Thanks for that image/thought that will never leave my mind. Going to bang my head against the wall hoping for brain injury.
Had the TODAY show on getting ready for work this AM … my dad has diabetes, so I was interested and I thought she was going to promote health, awareness, donate a portion of her earnings to some worthy insulin related cause … but NOOOO, much to my dismay, she said she waited to come out with her disease until she had the right message ?!
shameless self promotion the new American value ?!
Yep, the message that a company will pay her big bucks to say they’re the best.
gonna backfire when she has to go in for dialysis though.
Capitalism at its finest.
Unfreakingbelivable!
My biggest issue is twofold:
1) These current rounds of interviews have said that she has always preached eating these types of foods in “moderation”. I don’t know if I ever heard her use the word moderation…ever.
2) She’s blaming her diabetes on a whole host of factors including genetics, race and age. Despite the extensive literature linking obesity to diabetes, she basically claimed that her diet didn’t have anything to do with it.
I was thinking the same thing, I don’t remember ever hearing the word moderation come out of her mouth. All I saw was butter and fat going in.
Yep. She’s never said “moderation”. She laughs and give her cheesy grin every time she plops three sticks of butter in a skillet…and then adds a fourth.
This shameless shit is exactly why I can’t stand her or most of these “stars”.
Where’s Ellie Krieger? She’s about the only decent one left. (I do like Anne and Alex though)
When the rumors hit this weekend, I saw the Deen Defenders on another web site saying “you’re not supposed to eat that food every day, you nitwits.”
Really? When did Paula say that? When did she fix anything else? She’s obviously promoting herself as someone who knows how to cook, and this is all she cooks and eats anywhere she’s seen in public. Ray-Ray at least makes a regular, ongoing effort to show “lighter” fare, even if she’s pretending ½ cup of “EVOO” is “good” because it’s monounsaturated fat. Ray-Ray talks about whole grains, eating more vegetables, going meat-free. Paula is the only FN show host I know whose regular cooking setup includes not one but two deep fryers.
If Pauler said “moderation,” where? Did she say it more than once in the 500 hours of FN shows she’s taped so far?
She is correct, there ARE a whole host of factors that contribute to diabetes. Obesity is just one of them. I don’t why Pauler has diabetes…it could be her weight, or a combination of things. I don’t know if she qualifies as obese. Not defending her, just saying diabetes can have multiple causes.
Paula actually said those things? By God, the old girl’s delusional. Young people get diabetes as much as older folks. Diabetes doesn’t discriminate. Even a small minority of men get breast cancer. So if Ms Deen thinks that she’s qualified to be an “expert” on the subject, then Kanye West knows more about technology than Steve Jobs and that water must dry and fire is wet.
I haven’t seen that much backpedaling since I watched the Tour De France on rewind.
Leave it to Paula to cash in on a disease.
lol, i know. i was thinking with as much backpedaling as she’s doing, it’ll do wonders for helping her lose some of that weight.
she is just completely ridiculous. i know her followers drank her kool-aid (which somehow has twice the sugar as regular kool-aid and also manages to have butter in it) long ago, but i at least hope the media latches on to her hypocrisy.
I don’t know if I’ve ever heard her use the word “moderation” specifically, but she has said on several episodes, “I don’t eat like this every day.”
Maybe that was her way of telling her audience not to gorge themselves on the high fat/ high calorie stuff she makes on every show?
I think I’ve heard her say (but very infrequently) that “eating like this once in awhile is fine but not all the time.”
I do suspect that she probably got diabetes in large measure from a poor diet, though.
Why stop there? Why not go full outlandish and do commercials that endorse her doctor and his/her medical office that have been treating her for her diabetes? “Hi y’all…I’m Paula Deen, and I’m here to tell you about Doctor Butternuts and his wonderful staff of minions…”. Something along those lines.
Butter flavored insulin comin soon y’all!
Instead of promoting fitness and healthy eating, a proven way to control/ reverse Type II diabetes, she’s promoting a drug. For money. A way to cash in while still doing a cooking show that screams Type II diabetes. “Y’all can eat this donut bacon burger and wash it down with Victoza and melted butter!” Get ‘em sick, keep ‘em sick, then give ‘em a prescription. Eat a friggin’ salad and get your fat ass out for a run! Problem solved, you’re welcome.
You NAILED it. Seriously. This why the whole thing is so fucked up. This bitch has been yammering for years about eating shit with butter, sugar, cream, oils and instead of using her having diabetes to instruct people to avoid her mistakes…just take a fucking pill! It’s all about finding opportunities to cash in. Fuck her.
Her only motivation is to make as much money as she can before she croaks, from various diabetes related issues such as blindness and amputation ,maybe she`ll fry her amputated feet in buttet ( ya`ll )
I distinctly remember hearing her talk smack about vegetarians several times. It came back to bite her in the ass, didn’t it?
That’s it, exactly. There was no point in her revealing her diabetes diagnosis until she’d cemented the proper endorsement deal. If she’d come out about it before, all she would have had to promote would be the diet and exercise info we all know, and there ain’t no money to be made there, y’all!
Reprehensible. She always figures out a way to cash in, no matter what.
my sentiments excatly Jillian. If she truly wanted to “help” she could have learned more about it in the beginning and come out a lot sooner and as folks have said here I never heard her say moderation at all (on the rare occasions I watched) She just waited for the right endorsement deal – it’s all about the Benjamins for her. If it wasn’t she could take the money from this endorsement and contribute it to the American Diabetes Association for research and education…….and it’s not even her making her meals “more healthy” it’s her son doing the show….as you said BS!
This post needs a .gif of her stuffing her face at the Krispy Kreme factory.
Well at least she’s consistent. No one should be surprised that she’s whored herself out with this latest venture. Isn’t that her MO?
I do think that Paula may have missed the memo that she and her ridiculous personality jumped the shark sometime in 2008.
Food Network would do itself some good if they stopped airing her shows.
yes! And replace them all with “Bama Glama!”
not
I wish we were closer, Jill, so I could knuckle-bump you. *Respect*
A perfect example of why I’ve considered her to be a noxious blight on the landscape for years.
she’s such a fraud
When is the apology from the Deen camp going out to Tony Bourdain? I don’t want to miss it…
It’ll never happen, sorry to say. That’s the new PR strategy now: Admmiting one was wrong by not admitting anything at all. I am curious at what Mr. Bourdain has to say.
On the serious side, my mother, who passed away on Saturday, had Type2 Diabetes as well as Congestive Heart Failure and Kidney disease and Dementia as a result from a stroke. The fact that PAWWLA is using this revelation three years later to promote some drug has more than disgusted me. It makes me realize that she is extremely naive and just plain arrogant.
I have tried for the last year of my mother’s life to feed her good foods with taste without endangering her health, but it was hard and my mom would prefer anything with salt, sugar and yes butter.
I think Ms Deen needs a reality check and meet with some real Diabetics so she can hear from them what it’s like and maybe she can really make a difference.
But until then, I will just consider the old bat a culinary quack of a hypocrite
Jimbo- I’m really sorry for your loss. It’s truly awesome that you helped your mom enjoy food while still keeping them healthier. Best wishes to you and your family.
FYI — Bourdian’s reaction LMFAO
NoReservations Anthony Bourdain

It ain’t gonna happen. That’s the new PR strategy: admitting one was wrong by not admitting it at all. Works for politicians. Though, I would love to hear Mr. Bourdain’s personal take on this news.
On the serious side, my mother, who passed away on Saturday had diabetes as well as congestive heart failure, kidney disease and dementia resulting from a stroke a year before. It was hard trying to feed more healthy foods that still tasted good. But Mom still wanted fried foods, and anything with extra sugar, salt and even butter.
The fact that PAWWLA is using this 3 year old revelation to promote a drug, is self-serving and arrogant. She is making a mockery of proper healthy living.
The day she loses enough weight and actually makes healthy alternatives like Graham Kerr doid, I’ll respect her, but until then, she is a hypocritical culinary quack
I apologize for posting twice, but I wasn’t sure if the actual post was there.
Sorry.
No worries… I am so sorry for your loss…
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Sending a hug your way.
So very sorry for your loss, Jimbo. Diabetes is a horrible disease, some can control it , but it takes extreme discipline and luck. If left unchecked, it can causes other diseases, and complications such as multiple amputations /loss of limbs. My own Dad and many family members have battled this, some have lost.
Truly outrageous she hid this for years, promoting her hillbilly diet until the right marketing opportunity presented itself.
I fully expect an announcement of another cross promotion with a smoker’s patch. I can see them blinding chompers of hers in that add right now…
I thought it was common knowledge that she has diabetes. If I remember correctly, I thought she mentioned it some years ago. I’m always aghast at how many sweets she eats because I remember her saying before that she has diabetes.
I heard this a couple years ago also & was shocked at the foods she still cooked and snarfed down like a starving pig. I haven’t watched her in ages, but it didn’t surprise me that she is now the Smithfield Ham of NN & as Jill said, this is a new low, even for her.
Paula Deen’s diabeetus = karma
How else does one explain the new show “Not My Mama’s Meals” with Bobby Deen?
Perfect timing … in conjunction with her new drug deal.
Paula is truly queen of “working both sides of the street.”
The woman is disgusting – always has been.
It’s bad enough that she danced around the subject and avoided accepting responsibility for her diet, but shame on the drug company for teaming up with her to promote their drug. Paula Deen is not a role model for healthy living, or eating in moderation. She should be the poster child for what can happen if every recipe you make starts with “Melt a stick of butter.”
Not only did she outright LIE her way through the whole interview, she even tried to plug little Bobby’s new show! Thankfully, Roker cut her off real quick on that shameless plug. What a pig!
I hope there’s a clip of Roker doing the deed somewhere soon. Let me know.
Mega dittos to the request for a clip! BTW, when Al Roker was first diagnosed with diabetes, he not only announced it on the air live on “Today”, he also made obvious and visual efforts to lose weight and has kept off what looks to be about 90 pounds of weight he’s no longer carrying around him. He did the responsible thing. Paul-er the Faker couldn’t even tell you what “responsible” means if you handed her the Webster dictionary and a sticky tab placed on the actual page it’s on.
She’s a bottom feeder in my book. Disgusting.
And all for the mighty dollar.
Remember Paula, KARMA and you can’t take it
with y’all.
She won’t stop at anything will she? To make a buck, even promoting her illness to make money. She must have had a pact with the Devil! What’s next super sized Paula Deen’s Hospital Beds and Coffins?! Can’t be much far off….What a horrible human being, I’m ashamed I liked her at one point….truly embarrassing.
In the dictionary under the word “gluttony” should be a picture of Paula Deen. That woman is disgusting.
She claims she didn’t go public with her diabetes sooner because she wanted to wait until she had the correct info and resources to help others with diabetes. BS! She didn’t go public sooner b/c she knows her schtick and claim to fame is all about unhealthy food, and that would’ve been hypocritical to keep airing her shows and selling her cookbooks with those fat- and sugar-laden recipes (and thus, lose $$$). She alone brings the FN down to a whole new low.
What medication is she on? I want to go to my doctor and ask for it by name!
I think it’s Victosa. Novo Nordisk Mfg’s it, I’m Type II and that the medicine I’m on . I hope it does’nt go up in price since she’s advertising for them. This stuff cost nearly $700.00 for a 30 day supply if you don’t have insurance
Paula…has diabetes? That’s crazy talk, never would’ve thought that!
Now she can start making reduced-sugar recipes…and substitute….BUTTAAAAH!
TRAILER PARK TRASH at work here. Period. Use anything and everything to make $$$$. Her shows should be pulled off the air. ASAP. Shame on her.
What a skank! And to all the Evians out there that hope she will donate her endorsement money to research: you must live in Lah-Lah-Land! Ain’t gonna happen. She won’t spare a dime & Nova has no interest in finding a cure! End of story!
Next, we’ll learn she has cancer & lung dysfunction from years of smoking cig’s.
And we’ll all be shocked & amazed.
And people will still smoke cig’s, and people will still make her recipes and eat it all up, relishing every buttery bite.
I don’t credit FN stars with making a hoot of a difference in people’s habits, eating, smoking or otherwise.
Type 2 Diabetes AND a lifelong smoker…wtg, Paula. You are the epitome of health.
“Fat Bitch who got Rich pushing unhealthy food gets richer pushing medications you need because you ate all that unhealthy food. Only in America.” BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
Your honor, please have mercy on me for killing my parents. I’m an orphan!
Okay, there’s only one this wrong with this…
Paula Deen doesn’t HAVE diabetes.
Paula Deen IS type 2 diabetes. She is the living embodiment of type 2 diabetes.
i like how paula said her cooking was for entertainment. really? you mean we’re not supposed to actually eat what she cooks?
“When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you’ve been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you’ve got Type II Diabetes… It’s in bad taste if nothing else.” -Anthony Bourdian
Bourdain was right. All the PAAWLA fans who are still kissing her buttery ass prefer nnot to know so they can live in their personal bubbles. The truth hurts so that them all over.
Anthony Bourdain can be a pompous twat, but what he said about Paula is 100% spot on.
I also liked this quote of his:
“Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later.”
AB RULES
“Has another think coming,” not “another thing coming.” The phrase is, “if you think that, you have another think coming.”
Just in the interest of communications. I hesitate to think about exactly what “another thing coming” might actually mean.
That the subject is expecting something to happen, referred to as a thing. Instead of that thing, another thing is going to happen, hence, another thing coming. I don’t know about the rest of you, but to me, “Have a think” just doesn’t sound right at all.
Wow. You don’t get out much, do ya
I can’t believe I’m actually commenting on this but: both expressions are correct. The original saying was “think” but over time evolved to “thing”. I’m in the the “thing” camp only because the expression always sounded more to me like ‘if you’re expecting something to happen, then wait until you see what’s actually coming” (therefore the subject is an actual object or thing, not a thought) whereas people in the “think” camp hear it as “if that’s what you are thinking then you’re going to be thinking something else soon” making the thought the subject.

Paula Deen, the new voice of Diabetes!
What a load. Drew Carey is far and away a better role model!
Bet you never thought you’d say either of those things, huh?
PAAWWLA Deen is going to be on ABC’s The Chew tomorrow. You know, the show that replace that soap opera starring Susan Lucci.
If you stomach and lose 1 hr that you can never get back, I’d like to see how she handles the day after the stink she’s caused.
“The Chew” sucks ass, not sure how it can get worse… Except that I have diabetes and I cause diabetes. Vomit.
I’m sure she will get a standing o and they will make a big fuss over her. I can see her playing the martyr. Blech !
Better programming idea: Lock Paul-er and Daphne Oz the food-hating killjoy in a soundproof, windowless room for an hour and see who comes out alive. I would actually root for Daphne here.
Phony ass bitch.
Paula Deen is a gastro-intestinal terrorist. She’s probably felled more people than Osama bin Laden and Carlos the Jackal between them.
I watched many of her shows and enjoyed them but not once did it ever say I HAD TO MAKE THE FOOD SHE WAS SHOWING!
Common sense states using donuts for buns on hamburgers is not normal nor healthy–
Paula has a SHOW on the food newtork-she showed a glimpse of her lifestyle on that show-she knows how she got diabetes, you don’t need to remind her.
I know the Deen family–once lived in the same neighborhood and watched what they went thru in life-if given the chance you would be happy to smile and make money then struggle to try to make ends meet–IMHO
Life is what you make it-pointing fingers and bitchin will get you nowhere
Good luck to her and doing what she likes to do in life-I wish all of you the same.
I can’t stand Pauler for so many reasons, but really, who is at fault here; Paula or the stupid people who blindly follow her? Or Food Network for showing her. Or NBC for having her on the today show. The list goes on. Paula’s found a niche in ignorance. Is that such a surprise after all of these years? The world is full of things that are bad for you – make your own choice to avoid them or use them in moderation. Paula isn’t holding a gun to these people’s heads and making them eat butter. Don’t take away my butter or make me eat apple slices when I want my yearly serving of french fries!
At least Roker called her out on this and made an effort to stop her from promoting one of her stupid son’s programs.
PAAWLA, I’m still waiting for that apology to Bourdain.
It’s all fun and gooey butter cake until the flying insulin resistant monkeys attack.
So, how long until she has Wilford Brimley as a guest on her show?
So let me get this straight, if you have diabetes you have to bend over and take it and only do diabetic friendly stuff?
It’s been all about the money for Paula for years. Long gone is the everyday Paula. You know she will come out with a diabetic cookbook. It’s really pathetic to see her sink this low. Wow.
time to boycott the paula deen money machine…BOBBY COME OUT OF THE CLOSET ALL READY
Yes, Bobby. You are not fooling anyone.
Are you fuckin kidding me? Paula Deen…type 2 Diabetes……. HOW????
I am not surprised that she is diabetic. No one can eat the stuff she cooks and not be.
I love this post. I laughed really hard for about 5 minutes straight. Thank you I really needed that.
It’s a sad state of affairs when a person, someone who’s out there in the public eye constantly, hides information about a personal condition for the sake of monetary gain. Nevermind the fact she has already been able to afford the medications for the condition for 3 years. But why, WHY I ask, for those three years would you not only mention it publicly but also start a three year crusade of healthful foods? Greed, that’s why. Life and DEATH by the almighty dollar is the creedo of today’s societal elite. Paula Deen, you disgust me with your actions.
On a side note, it’s hilarious to see how so many actually DEFEND her on the Yahoo articles i’ve read today. Unbelievable.
Novo Nordisk mfg’s Victosa a medication I use for my type II diabetes. This stuff cost almost $700.00 for a 30 day supply if you don’t have insurance. Hopefully the price won’t go up since they hired this HAG a their spokesmodel.
My late mother took Novolog Flexpen for over the last year of her life. It has a scale that allows you to arrange how much insulin to take based on the blood sugar.
I do not know this product, but Novo is making a huge mistake by having the queen of high chlolesterol as it’s spokesperson. Mary Tyler Moore and Halle Berry would never do it the way she did and they both have Diabetes. At least they do it to teach and help people to control their blood sugar. Paula Deen, knowing her, will never learn until it’s too late.
Victosa is an injectable medication. My Dr. says it’s a synthetic insulin and it works well for me,but I’m afraid Paula will try to portray it as a cure all drug. There is no type II medication that will work properly unless you control your DIET.
Phonies and opportunists piss me off to the max. FN is full of them.
I remember when Barbra Walters confronted her on ‘The View’ about the food she cooks she brushed it aside. And all of her half witted followers called Walters a bitch for ‘attacking’ Paula.
Not really, Joy Behar made a comment about her food and unhealthy it was.
Yes really.
So Paula Deen reveals her diabetes diagnosis right around the same time her son Bobby debuts his own show featuring healthful versions of her recipes. There’s just no way this is a coincidence. Her management team had to be preparing for this ‘reveal’ for a long time. Something tells me either someone was threatening to leak the information or the information was slowly spreading on it’s own anyway (hence the rumors).
It’s disgusting what she’s become. I mean, she used to be genuine on camera. Now it’s endorsements, endorsements, endorsements. She doesn’t really care about the disease or the cause, just her reputation. I hope the public backlash forces her off the air.
I would call Paula a shameless whore, but that would be an insult to whores. At least whores are upfront about doing it for the money. Paula is cashing in under the guise of caring about the heaith and well-being of other people.
I’m taking donations in order to fly to Georgia and punch Paula in the uterus.
P. D. probably doesnt even have a uterus anymore. How about a punch to her fat face?!?!?!
And to think that I used to like her… But now she is Kardashian territory. WHAT. A. WHORE.
It did all play out rather neatly, didn’t it?
Rumor breaks in spring.
In the fall, the endorsement was announced.
Her son’s show debuts a couple of months later.
Announcement.
Here’s a thought. If the rumor hadn’t gotten some traction and some people started nosing around, would she have ever gone public with it? She had already had it for a couple of years when the rumor came out.
To me, it reeks of someone who wants to eat her stick of butter and have it too.
Of she would not have gone public with it.Even Paula knows, deep down, that announcing she has DM while cooking the crap she makes would be uber-uncool. But, like most slimebags, she found a way around it – she sold her soul to make money. Now, there will be thousands of diabetics who think that they can eat the crap she makes and still be “healthy”. What a load.
Also, she hasn’t lost any weight in the last 3 years, has shee. You’d think that she would, if she wanted to be healthier.
So true. And teaming up with the drug companies is like teaming up with the devil. Would I expect her to understand or care what it’s like to have these toxins thrust into every crack in society or have to worry about getting them due to the overlord’s money and patents? Of course not.
BASTARDS.
This isn’t really news. I figured she already had to have diabetes or was going to develop it since she cooks such unhealthy dishes all the time.
Did you all see the headline about chef Anthony Bourdain and Paula Deen:
‘Anthony Bourdain calls out Paula Deen (again) in not-so-subtle tweet’
Totally Team Bourdain.
I am no fan of Paula(or Bourdain) but he is a hyporcrite. His french food is very high in fat and BUTTER(Paula anyone). The only reason the french aren’t fat is because they excercise more than us and they drink wine. No excuse or double standard when it comes to american or french cuisine. If you’re american be proud of it.
I don’t like Paula, but it’s pretty damn rich for Bourdain, former chain smoker who still pickles his liver and gets rip-roaring drunk on every show to chide anyone about their health. Aging hipsters with no self-awareness bother me more than old ladies who slap their name on everything.
Maybe, but at least you didn’t see Bourdain get a paid endorsement from a nicotine patch company when he quit smoking.
He’s no poster child for good health for sure, but he’s not out to make money on people’s diseases, either.
EXACTLY
Not only that but Bourdain has never denied his vices. He’s made jokes about not knowing if he could survive Saudia Arabia’s strict alcohol restrictions on his show, etc.
I find it rich that you’re slamming a man for quitting smoking. Most people are commended for that sort of thing…especially as he did it for his daughter’s sake.
Compare that to Paula’s actions.
Wilford Brimley: Actor. Spokesman. Protoss.
MY MUSTACHE FOR AIUR
It’s entirely too loud in here!
Quiet down!
There’s no accountability anymore!
I have diabeetus!
As someone who lives with type 2 diabetes, I admit I dont always eat healthy. There are times I give into my craving for a cookie or slice of pie or cheesecake.
But yes Moderation IS a key. If I eat something sweet today tomorrow I watch more carefully. I also eat 1 cookie not the package. thats moderation.
I would be ashamed to have any association with Paula Deen. While she may be a good “Chef” she is a horrible role model. What really saddens me are the cult followers who think she is the next coming or something.
She lied plain and simple. Why did she wait 3 years? It doesn’t take THAT much time to gather information.
and yes of course her sons new show and deal with the drug company are all just a co insidence.
her marketing team are genius. I hope this blows up in her face. I wont be watching her or her spawn anytime soon.
I just looked at the website for her son’s show. Really, is doughnut bread pudding any healthier because you use whole wheat doughnuts and one less egg yolk???? lol
I actually just read the “stats” in one of his recipes and the calories and fat were still ridiculous. It was slightly less than Paula’s original. One stat of some cake was 99 grams of sugar in her recipe (yep for one serving…do you know how much that is????), and it went down to 76 grams of sugar in his…again, do you know how much that is???? And still way over 600 calories for a piece of cake, yes that was the “lighter” version. His show is very misleading and I just hope he gets called out to because I honestly thought these were lighter versions meaning lifestyle lighter.
By, God,
We would have thought that Paula’s Moronic Son #1 would have provided a moral point of view as far as good health was concerned. Apparently, his is still a moron.
He is no expert on health and even Dr. Oz might be disgusted by this whole shit.
I don’t know when the show is on, but I will watch it once to see if Moron Son #1 is really stupid or decieving this country. But my answer would be both.
Or he’s just lucky to be able to ride on mommy’s hypocritical coat-tails.
But that’s just it, why SHOULD she be a role model? What grown woman or man would look at a chef on TFN and say “That’s who I want to be my role model.” As far as kids go, I doubt many of them are watching Paula Deen, and if parents are looking for Paula to be their kids’ role models, then they should stop it and start with themselves.
I live with Type 2 as well. There are MANY things I could be doing better but my a1c readings are managable, so I’m doing something right, and doing it without insulin. Paula Deen’s actions disgust me completely, because she held this back for three years while pitching foods I would go nowhere near. Sure, I like the sweet stuff as much as anyone, but my key is reading nutritional labels to see how much I can have without sending my glucose shooting over 200. The stuff Pauler has on her show I honestly wouldn’t even WANT to eat because I’ve been eating different for the past two years myself..that’s how bad her food is. And now the drug endorsement? How much more cra$$ can you get?
Jillian, thank you for being as angry as I am! I have been seething all day about Paula Deen’s crass bid to make a second fortune off people living with diabetes.
I am equally angry at NBC News for letting Al Roker, who produces shows for the Food Network, interview Paula Deen, one of theFood Network’s biggest stars. I disagree with someone who said he was tough on her. He asked one question about her style of cooking and didn’t pursue the topic.
The Today show also opted not to have its medical expert, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, contribute any expertise on the issue of diabetes and diet OR how Paula Deen’s doughnut burgers might contribute to poor health.
They have had Dr. Nancy talk about the Kardashians in the past, for christ sakes, but they give her the day off when this is the topic?
I get you, but seriously? Who in their right mind would look at a donut burger and NOT know it “might contribute to poor health.” You seriously think people need a medical expert to tell people that!?!
She’s a fame whore. That’s all. I really don’t see why there is uproar over this.
I am not as angry at her as I am at the company that wants her to endorse their medicine. She has been the godmother of all that is decadent and unhealthy for the past years. How can anyone take her seriously when she pops up on our screen talking about a drug for treating diabetes?
To Paula’s handlers (yes, we know you’re reading these comments) – please pass this along to Paula.
Bless your heart. I hope the rewards of selling your soul to the devil are worth it.
Wasn’t she on Dr. Oz a little while ago and when he questioned her about the state of her health, she said she didn’t have any major health problems?
It’s not unusual for a “new” diabetic to carry on in a state of denile. Only when you take responsibility for your decisions and actions and “own it’ are you truely aware.
While on today’s “The Chew” she says stress is a cause, and called it out well before a wrecked diet and lack of exercise. She plain just doesn’t get it. Diabetes, and it’s host of body damaging effects, are what will kill her. It plain doesn’t matter that she doesn’t believe it.
I think she believes it, she just didn’t admit it because it would ruin ratings.
How long are you considered a “new” diabetic? She’s had it for 3 years. Seems like a long time to me.
I believe one is considered a “new diabetic for 5 years.I was diagnosed in 2010,type 2 ,non insulin dependant or medication dependant. I wrote to the food network about a year ago mentioning the fact that if she is diabetic she is not doing herself or her fans a favor. I also can’t stand the fact that she has her dogs in the kitchen with her, feeding them and then sticking her fingers in the food. Does she feed the fillm crew with that tainted food? Does she think it’s cute when she has food hanging and smeared on her mouth?
The one thing noticed or maybe I missed it. What will she be promoting next. I’m guessing, life insurance or the funeral insurance. She may as well take her promoting right to the grave. Has anyone told her that she can’t take the money with her?
Wow….just wow.
I read yesterday that Food Network claims they didn’t know about Paula’s disease until last week. How could they not have known? So that begs the question: is Food Network lying so they can backtrack, or did Paula screw the FN by keeping them out of the loop? Should be interesting to see how FN handles this PR disaster. Not that I’ll know – I stopped watching the FN a year ago.
Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
I bet someone blackmailed her into tell this. Since she kept it to herself for so long.
At the start of her career, I was a big fan of her because of her work ethic, her comforting motherly demeanor, and her (let’s face it) fucking delicious food, but her greediness and shamelessness has finally turned me away. Endorsing the evil Smithfield was bad enough, but profiting off the very disease that her gluttony caused is just disgusting.
She should be ashamed of herself. Money really is the root of all evil.
Me too! I really enjoyed her show early on – her personality was not obnoxious back then. If you compare and contrast an older show with now it hardly seems like the same person. Success turned her into a big money-grubbing phony.
I caught some of her son’s healthy cooking show over the weekend, and of course she was on it. He made something with light cream cheese and Paula claimed she’d never tasted light cream cheese before. Any knucklehead who likes cream cheese and has tried to eat in moderation knows about the light version, so she was either lying then or was lying about the claim of moderation. Then I read that one of her endorsement deals is with Phil. cream cheese – they actually make it, how could she not have tried it? I know it’s a ridiculous point but it’s just so galling how her phoniness is so blatant and relentless. I’d even give her a break if she could just cut the crap and be real for a minute. Not even diabetes can get her to do that. It makes me sad what she has become.
How funny was it when Bobby told her she that she could either eat his “healthier” version of pimento cheese and Gooey-Butter-Cake —— or get a treadmill? You could hear a pin drop, and I’ll bet that was the start of ol’ Pauler’s goose being cooked. Pauler’s spawn was outting her!
I agree. I don’t know if she was always the cackling, goofy, phony sounding, son promoting horndog she is now and back then they made her tone it down or if money and fame made her adopt that persona but either way she’s unwatchable these days. What she should be endorsing are fake blue contact lenses, plastic surgery, false eyelashes, enormous gray wigs and ridiculous looking day-glo white dentures. She’d at least show a little integrity that way.
I also used to like her way back when…before she went all “Hollywood” and got the wigs, fake tan, plastic surgery and blindingly white veneers. She was very sweet and comforting to watch. Now I can’t stand her show.
She’s been overexposed for a very long time and I quit watching her when that stupid Paula’s Party came on. It doesn’t surprise me that she’s got diabetes and that she hid it only to spring it on us when she could make a (probably) lucrative deal with a drug company. She’s a big smoker, too… wonder when she gets lung cancer if she’ll endorse a chemotherapy drug.
Paula Deen is expanding her promotional field. Next month Good Housekeeping will feature her on the cover ass up promoting the latest break through in hemroid salve. The cover will show her applying it with one of her Spatulas and a Y’all Smile
piss my pants funny!
I believe the word is spatulur
Drug companies are bad, mmkay?
I like the drugs that keep my MS at bay, that’s for sure.
It’s an evil conspiracy, y’all.
/goes to chug down some Robitussin.
Seriously… remember when zyrtek was only available by prescription for $100 (my share after insurance) for a 30 day supply? As soon as the patent ran out, it became available OTC and for the price of $25 for 30 days with no insurance. Bad, bad drug companies. Bad, bad Paula Deen.
I hope you guys don’t take this the wrong way, but I have always felt like Paula Deen was trailer trash. It doesn’t matter what size your paycheck is or your ZIP code. Trash is trash. I respect that she managed to keep off the welfare rolls by attaining wealth and fame, but to call her a “role model” is (and has always been) absurd.
She gave a tearful tribute on The Chew today, spewing nonsense about why she never before mentioned that she had diabetes. As for the money she’ll receive from the pharmaceutical company, she AND her boys are ALL being compensated! Out of the goodness of their hearts, they are donating a PORTION of their proceeds to the American Diabetes Association. Okay. Whatever.
I saw her on The Chew too. Her response at the criticism was horrible. She said of course she’s getting comepnsated because she has to work. She has to work???? She’s 65 years old and a millionaire, give me a break. How pathetic that she mentioned a portion is going to charity. I would hope she gives a lot to charity, gven what she earns.
I flipped on the Chew today. Saw Pawler and her both spawn touting his new show . It was bad enough last week when Spawn was on alone and they called her.
after 5 words, I changed the channel. Later saw on the news how she was donating to ADA uh huh because now she is trying to do damage control big time. Cant seem to get away from her
oh the news also made a big thing about the Chew people getting Pawler a diabetic friendly cake for her birthday
Happy Bday classless greedy trailer trash. Oh wait she lives in a mansion is there such thing as mansion trash? YES!
You can take the girl out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer park out of the girl.
Type II Diabetes is easily controlled with diet and most of all, weight loss.
Paula suffers from a much more serious condition: GREED.
Thank you for your refreshing burst of honesty. It seems that the “greed” gene is hereditary and her sons inherited it too.
They are so annoying. You’re in your freaking 30s, you’re not 20 year old frat boys.
Actually they are both in their 40′s, even worse.
This has probably already been said, but what really struck me about the Today interview (with the exception of the painfully obvious) was the line “I didn’t want to come out with it until I had the proper information…blah blah…”. So it took you three f*ckin’ YEARS to get “the proper information”?!! Really?? Wow…SUCH bullshit! I agree with everyone here who said she waited until the right endorsement deal came along. Woman’s evil!
Agreed. bigtime.
Can’t help but wonder what Paula’s new dishes will be now that she’s been outed with Diabetes? Will a “repentant” Paula do Southern style Diabetic diet Show? Oh I forgot, Bobbie is going to do that.
More chilis!
the woman is complete and total hypocrite!!!, and a fu****g liar !!! ,i truly hope this backlashes on her and she slithers off the food network soon!! , but as that useless channel is also on the way out ( ratings ) they will go down together!!
Wow, any miniscule vestage of a shred of compassion I might still harbor for Pauler just flew right out the window.
Shameful, Paula…SHAMEFUL.
The woman was doing one helluva bout of spin doctoring on today’s episode of THE CHEW. (By the way, is it me, or is THE CHEW just a Food Network infomercial aired daily on a major network..?)
I seem to recall Paula Deen being interviewed on TV (by Barbara Walters, maybe..?) and she announced that she and her family had a warning they called out in case they found (ahem) “something” left on the floor by her apparently-none-too-housebroken dogs:
“TURD ALERT! TURD ALERT!”
…you can’t say that the woman didn’t warn us in advance…
I just came across a site that reflects the feelings as reflected in FNH. This is a good read and it also has a statement for those on Team Paula who live in
blindly in bubbles instead of the real world.
Team Paula, with apologies to Laurence Fishburne, this is the desert of the real.
what is the site? I’d like to check it out
what a cun*. I understand “working”, but man this white trash is really effin greedy, and just shows you..she just doesn’t get it
I’ll voice the opinion that others have. The public isn’t stupid, they know when someone is not genuine. Yes I think this was planned for a long time. Her son’s show? OMG So planned it’s not funny. Paula is a joke right now in my eyes. If she came out 3 months after she was diagnosed instead of 3 years and told her fans, listen this is what I have but I’m going to keep sharing my same recipes but also share new recipes with you that will be more within my new life style, I hope you stay with me while we make these transitions, blah, blah…..she could have won everyone over. But no. She kept it all a secret until she could secure a financial gain and then acts like she’s advised everyone to do everything in moderation all along. That is such a lie it’s not funny. I’m tired of famous people’s BS to make themselves look good.
Thats what I think 100%. She wouldnt have to necessarily change her style of cooking or her show. Just have some blurb at the beginning about how all things in moderation or special occasion blah blah. What I hate is the opportunistic feel of this. If the lady truly needed the money then maybe I would have some sypathy about her waiting until she had an endorsement deal but theres nobody in that family going hungry.
Here’s some more articles that make the point we’re making.

Is is safe to say that we have lost Symon and Batali to the sellout crowds?
Here’s one from The Guardian, a news site, I recommend http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2012/jan/18/paula-deens-most-egregious-recipes?newsfeed=true
Jilliam is psychic! from herMarch 2010 post:
“Behold Paula Deen’s Cheesy Ham and Banana Casserole, a heavy contender for one of the worst recipes on the planet. It’s a nasty combination of ham, bananas, bacon, cheese, and potato chips sandwiched between soggy, eggy slices of white bread. And rumor has it that if you can actually swallow one bite down, you’ll instantly get Type II Diabetes.”
Blame it on the ham and banana casserole.
What in the world is the big deal about paula having diabetes? Why so up in arms?????? Did any sane person look at her recipes/food and think “Wow, that sounds healthy!” She never made any claims her food was good for anyone. FYI, any person with the right genetics (or wrong I suppose) can develop Type II diabetes. It is in fact a myth that you get it because you are overweight or eat a lot of sugar. Both increase your risk, but unless you have the genetic factor that predisposes you for Type II, you’ll never develop it. Who really cares that she’s promoting some diabetic management system. If you’re diabetic you’ve got to use something and it’s all pretty much the same price and does the same thing. So what if someone buys a brand because paula deen said I use it. Who cares if she makes money? Jealous much? As for Bourdain, I have nothing for contempt for him and his desperate famewhore attempts to stay relevant. I am not a Paula Deen fan, would never eat her food but I say who the fuck cares enough to get upset over this?
BINGO to every word.
AMEN!
It’s because her “help” for others with type 2 diabetes comes not in ways to make life style changes, healthy diet, etc., but in CONTROLLING the disease with a very expensive prescription drug. WTF??? I’m all for capitalism but for Christ’s sake, call a spade a spade. The only person she’s helping is Paula Deen.
you can’t just take a diabetes management drug. you have to take a prescription and a doctor won’t just give to anyone who has diabetes. He has to go by criterea. BTW, some diabetics have to take something called insulin or they’ll die.
Finally.. someone with sense. I don’t think she led anyone to believe that her recipes were healthy in any way. I think any person can see that they aren’t.
Anyway, her having diabetes is her personal life. why is she obligated to share this with the world? i don’t understand the outrage. She already has more money than these jealous people ever will. So who really gives a crap.
Ahhhwea, I am so in agreement with almost everything you said. Most diabetics are predisposed to the disease. Yes, choices they make in life don’t help (such as obesity for sure), but eating a ton of fat and sugar does not “turn you into” a diabetic. I am a nurse and I am diabetic, so I have some knowledge. I am not claiming to be a physician, just giving insight into what knowlege base I have. FN chefs are cooks that are there for entertainment, and for some teaching. Paula did not claim to be a registered dietician, and she has never claimed her food was healthy. She has never said “you must eat like this every meal”. I live in the midwest…heck, butter, cream cheese, cheese, red meat…all staples in this area. What I never understand about many posters here is how much they HATE FN and the hosts. And how much TIME they spend watching the shows and posting. I hate Orange County Choppers. When my husband has it on, you know what? I don’t watch it. I don’t go online and spew hatred. Why get all involved and spend so much of your life in hating someone and wishing ill will. I am not a Paula fan, but I can tell you, one of my co-workers son’s is very ill, 10 years old. I wrote to Paula. She sent him a HUGE box of goodies, and she also agreed for alone time with him in Washington DC last year. Spent half an hour with him and loaded him down with more goodies. Guy Fieri also spent a lot of time with the little guy and his family and told them the best pizza place (they asked) and paid for their dinner.
Before I climb off the soapbox, Anthony Bourdain has a history of drug abuse, alcoholism, adultery. He has eaten warthog or some such animal’s anus. A beating cobra heart. He thinks nothing of abusing and causing extreme pain to animals. I would find someone much better to admire and to quote.
mainecoon1995 you said:
“What I never understand about many posters here is how much they HATE FN and the hosts. And how much TIME they spend watching the shows and posting”
I don’t hate any of them myself.
Some show hosts or chefs on Food Network I find annoying or pretentious, but I don’t hate any of them.
I do like this site and find it fun most of the time, but I also get puzzled by a lot of hatred or contempt towards some of the chefs/ cooks/ hosts on FN.
I’m not in agreement with Paula Deen’s actions over this diabetes situation or how she’s handled it, but I am not enraged over it.
At this stage, there is so much animosity against her over this, I think her career might be permanently damaged if she continues on with a plan to sponsor this drug company. She really should reconsider and get out of the sponsorship if she can – and issue a public apology.
I never once considered her a dietary role model. Her show was fun to watch, but I never once considered trying any of her recipes on a daily basis.
From what I’ve read about Anthony Bourdain, I agree with your assessment of him. I’ve caught his show a few times, and he sometimes seems okay, but often, he’s pretentious.
My pasting in a headline mentioning him above in another post should not be construed as my endorsement of him or his views. I just found it interesting he was getting involved in this controversy.
Yes, it’s a humor site, but what the FN celebrities do can sometimes be annoying or downright destructive to good quality cooking. These celebrities are hardly cooks or chefs and more like entertainers who invent these dishes when they run out of ideas.
So you can see why we at FNH have a right to also be as honest as we can be. And we can also thank Bourdain for being honest about FN as well as the allure of the celebrity chef. Remember, he no longer does drugs and cigarettes. He has a child now. He have responsibilty for his health. The same can’t be said for Paula Deen and her cavalier attitude.
Is Anthony Bourdain shilling for some rehab center? I don’t think so.
Exactly. He may not be everyone’s favorite TV host, but at least he’s not a hypocrite.
I agree with MAINECOON1995 in regards to Anthony Bourdain. He’s an arrogant and callous old man who tries to appear so hip, young and “cool” on his food show.
What’s more disturbing is that Mr. Bourdain seems to actually enjoy seeing animals suffer which means that he’s a sadistic individual who most likely doesn’t care about anyone but himself. He’s definitely not someone that one should look up to or admire. Who cares what this man thinks about the stars from the Food Network.
Paula Deen should have come out earlier about her diabetes. Despite that I admire her much more than the sadistic and callous Mr. Bourdain.
So PD has diebeetees. So what. It’s not just a fat person disease. So what her food is unhealthy. No one forces anyone to eat it. Ask 100 people and I bet 0 would say Paula is known for healthy cooking. How much of the food shows, even “fancy ones” show healthy cooking? 1% maybe. Every time I see a chef they’re talking about the wonders of bacon (high salt, lots of fat), pork, pork belly (salt salt fat fat). Beef, veal, lamb, duck, organ meats, lTuna, butter, foi gras, cavier, heavy cream, cheese, white rice, and the list goes on. all featured on about 1999999999999 cooking shows. If I ate a meal prepared by a professional chef every day I would weigh at least 9000 pounds.
No one forces anyone to eat anything.
I think you’re talking with the most sense. Anyway, I distinctly remember her mentioning her diabetes several years ago, so this is actually not a shock to me. In fact, everytime I see her eating sweets, I always say to myself. ‘Doesn’t she have diabetes?’
I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. Who looks to Paula Deen as a role model, anyway? Besides, she’s always talking moderation. She never claimed to eat like that every day.
^^^^This.
I agree.
I am confused as to why everyone thinks Paula is a hypocrite? Perhaps I don’t understand the meaning of the word because I fail to see hypocrisy at work here. First of all, as a nurse, I can tell you I have worked with patients whose are normal weight and thin who have Type II diabetes and I have worked with morbidly obese patients who don’t have it. What most people seem to be getting confused about is what causes diabetes. You can’t get diabetes from eating fatty foods or sugary foods. You get it because in your dna sequence you have that faulty gene that somehow gets triggered causing physiological events that lead to diabetes (either type I or type II). Just because her food is outrageously unhealthy doesn’t mean she got diabetes from it. Certainly an unhealthy diet can increase your odds of “flipping the switch” and developing the disease, but the unfortunate fact is if you have the genetic make up to develop it, odds are you’re going to eventually manifest it clinically. I am not an endocrinologist or md nor am I a diabetes expert. What I do know is that we all make choices in life what we eat (except for poor people whose choices are very limited) and we can’t blame paula deen, the school system, mcdonalds, fast food, processed food or anyone but ourselves if we make bad choices and are overweight and suffer the consequences. I have no problem with her endorsing Novo disk. I see no reason to get upset with her. If she developed breast cancer and went to cancer tx cts of america and gave testimonials would everyone hate her for that?
I agree. And so what if she didn’t say anything about her diabetes right off the bat? So what if a pharmaceutical co. asked her to represent them?Who are we to say she should have immediately divulged that info upon finding it out? People are quick to throw stones these days, when most everyone lives in a glass house.
To me, she’s worse than a hypocrite. She’s putting a friendly, motherly face disease and early death. She a huckster, and a bamboozler, and FN should cancel her shows.
She is peddling foods that keep blood sugar and unsulin elevated so that people will have to take drugs to lower them. Of course she is selling the drugs too.
I visited her Diabetes in a New Light website and her so-called light recipe is for seven cheese lasagna. No diabetic should be eating lasagna noodles, much less smothered in seven types of cheese. There is nothing light, or healthy about that recipe.
I have a relative whose father died from diabetes complications. At the end he was in severe pain, blind and hallucinating, and unable to control any of his bodily functions.
Don’t be fooled by Paula’s down home manner. The devil assumes many guises and shapes.
Here’s why people are not pleased with Ms. Deen’s conduct. First, she kept the info about her diabetes to herself for 3 years. 3 YEARS. She kept it while still promoting and concocting dishes that would give anyone diabetes. Second, she was promoting a diabetic drug perscription the same time she revealed her secret. Also, her son was promoting a show which is supposed to provide healthier versions of Paula’s dishes. She did say that as a paid spokesperson that she was going to donate a portion to the American Diabetes Asssociation.
But that’s not enough for her to logically consider herself an expert on Diabetes. Now you say you have worked with patients who have diabetes but you at least was honest to say you are not a diabetes expert. Well, as the son of a diabetic mother, I had to spend the last year of her life taking care of her, watching her blood sugar, giving her insulin only because the regualr medications and apple cider vinegar were no longer helping her. All of this after she suffered a stroke. She was not easy because even as I was trying to offer and feed her healthy and delicious food, she still wanted fried chicken over baked. Fish sticks over salmon. But, I did buy diet soda and sparkling water w/o sugar and told her it was real pop.
So, I guess you could say I am an expert on Diabetes. And I didn’t need a medical degree, but I’ve seen a lot first hand enough to know how bad it is. Ms. Deen, is no doubt a very popular figure with viewers and they follow her recipes religiously. So while you’re right that we have a responsibility for our health, so does Ms. Deen. Especially after hiding her disease info for 3 years, even from DR. Oz, she has a responsibility to her audience.
The truth has to be told and in FNH, the truth was told: Paula cares more about her empire and herself rather than the well-being of her fans and millions of Diabetics. The fact that she kept the info for 3 years should convince you while people are angry. Plus her refusal to moderate what she eats for herself and her fans should be reason enough for you to see while you should take a look at the medical profession and see how Diabetes affect people and how they can live long without endangering themselves by balancing their blood sugar.
So yes genetics may be involved, but so is taking care of the patient and not being an enabler for their physical decline. Think about it.
But that’s just it, JIMBO. She says time and time again that she does NOT eat fatty foods all the time. She’s been saying that since day one. And there have been times when she actually did do healthier option shows. Granted, they were few and far between, but, like I said, she never professed to eating this way all the time–just the opposite, in fact. As I said before, I remember hearing that she has diabetes YEARS ago. So this whole revelation was nothing new to me. Maybe the general public wasn’t listening, but I do remember hearing about it before. Anyway, like I said, it’s not Paula Deen’s responsiblity to make sure that everyone in the world eats a balanced diet. If a diabetic watches her show and lives off of her recipes, knowing full well that they are not the healthiest, then that’s THEIR problem, not hers. I’m sorry, but I just don’t see what the big hubbub is all about.
Perhaps she SAYS she doesn’t eat fat and sugar all the time, but her BMI says something else.
apple cider vinegar has no clinical use in diabetes management and treatment. or any disease management. if your mother was insisting on eating unhealthy food and you were her primary care giver then logically you were providing unhealthy food to her.
You obviously didn’t read. I was providing healthy food and she hated it but she had to. Once a week she had something fried as was approved by her primary doctor. But I gave her healthy food and stopped, I repeat, stopped giving her apple cider vinegar when it wasn’t enough to lower her blood sugar. It did at the time but soon the pills and vinegar were ineffective and insulin was the last resort.
So don’t fucking tell me I was feeding her bad food. I was doing my best and that accusation was unwarranted and disrespectful. I did my best to keep my mother healthy, but she had too many ailments that was killing her. My back was against the wall trying to keep her alive.
If you had any compassion toward the patient’s families, you would have given a much appropriate response than the cruel response you just spewed out.
Have you dealt with patients with congestive heart fasilure, kidney failure, hypertension, and diabetes combined? Obviously you haven’t based on your response. So until you show a little backbone and some humanity, which nurses I’ve met have show, don’t tell me you have experience. Just back the hell off.
First off, I am sorry that your mother died. I am sure it was difficult for you to care for someone with complex medical needs. Yes, I have cared for people with all of those issues and worse so I know what the issues are. I was an ICU nurse for several years before I transitioned to oncology. Your statement was that you wanted to give her healthy food and that she wanted unhealthy food. You also seem to feel that there is some blame on a Paula Deen type for people wanting to eat unhealthily. I disagree. It’s generational, it’s cultural and it’s a choice. My comment about apple cider vinegar is related to being tired of people buying the myth it does anything. It doesn’t accomplish any blood sugar management and has no health benefits that have been SCIENTIFICALLY STUDIED. So, anyone who claims to be a “Diabetes expert” and states its use as a treatment regimen is not informed. Sorry, but that’s the truth. Part of being in health care is educating people, even if it seems cold or mean but I can’t lie.
Jimbo, my prayers to you and your daugher. It is definitely a war you are fighting every day.
Personally, to everyone angry with Paula about coming out and sharing about her diabetes….why does anyone think Paula HAD to tell people? I am also one who heard about her diabetes a long time ago, but even if it was just put out before the public a few days ago, why do we feel we have the right to know? It is her disease, her body, her business. We all have things we don’t even let our own family members know about…what right do we have to demand to know all? And I agree with the other poster…if she had cancer and was endorsing the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, would you feel the same? She has found treatment that has worked for her and has the right to be the spokesperaon. Again, I don’t care one way or the other about Paula, but I don’t understand the hate and the disgust. Personally, the caricature that Paula portrays (as opposed to the mid 2000s) makes me not watch her show. But she owes me nothing. I choose to watch her or not, choose to buy her products or not, choose to choose her sponsers or not. Look at the foods Michael Symon, Alton Brown, Anne Burrell and other favorites of this site cook…many of them also very high in fat, salt and low in nutrition. They are promoting nothing more but entertainment and some instructions on how to cook. You choose to make their foods or not.
Totally agree with you mainecoon1995!
I agree the drug endorsement deal isn’t really hypocrisy, it’s just crass opportunism and ethically questionable. The hypocrisy is in continuing to promote cooking unhealthy food when Paula herself shouldn’t be eating it. Even if her unhealthy diet didn’t cause the diabetes, she can’t eat like that anymore, but she never offers any kind of caveat like “y’all enjoy this, I’ll just have a little taste” or some such. It’s true she never claims it’s health food, but the show has always been about reveling in gluttony.
I don’t think cooking show hosts are “entertainers” in the same way as actors or singers whose work by definition is purely entertainment. TV chefs entertain, but they are teaching you things, presenting recipes they encourage you to try and giving ideas to influence your decisions in your own life. For Paula to say “it’s entertainment” when it’s pointed out that cooking like her can be very unhealthy, it’s so disingenuous. Of course, anytime someone in show business says “I’m an entertainer” they’ve usually done something the public is disgusted with.
Yeah, comedians always use that excuse too. It’s just a way of not taking responsibility for anything.
I think people are more disgusted with her greedy opportunism and dishonesty (not hypocrisy). She gained celebrity by showing fattening foods almost exclusively, and then used that celebrity for profit by putting her name on everything under the sun.
She claims to not eat that way all the time, and I say bullshit. Have you seen her? She obviously eats an unhealthy diet because she’s fat. And part of her “charm” has always been that she’s sharing her family’s recipes – that means it’s WHAT THEY EAT.
So she makes these unhealthy foods, profits off them, lies about eating them, then gets paid to endorse a medicine that she needs because of the very products she peddles. Her greed knows no bounds, and THAT’S what truly disturbing.
I have to add here that I do NOT think she’s responsible in any way for the health of others. The only way Paula can MAKE you fat is if she’s cramming her food down your throat while you’re tied to a chair.
I wish there was a “like” button. Dr. Nancy Schneiderman, Today Show contributor, said basically the same thing.
Shameful. There are many great healthy cooks and chefs out there with great personalities that would give honest food and set excellent examples.
momma
Many healthy chefs? Other than someone like than that registered dietitician/personal chef on Next Food Network Star w/ Melissa D’ Arabian and some other health NUTS REJECTS sorry. French foods?! Not healthy. Show me a healthy chef and Pam we can then talk.
she sucks
I have mixed feelings about Paula but the more and more I read on different food blogs the more I think it’s really about the money bottom line. Too bad too cause I use to watch her back in the day I really thought she was pretty funny and down to earth.
As soon as I saw the teasers for Bobby Deen’s mom recipe low cal remix show, I figured something was going on. Have you noticed ole Pauler has shed some pounds on the new shows? And even Capt’n Michael has shed the complexion of high blood pressure (all ruddy, bulging eyes, and puffed face). One thing I can predict is that as soon as Paula is shown in commercials for the diabetes drug, the cost of that drug is going to go sky-high. If the pharmaceutical companies were not allowed to advertise their drugs, the prices would be a lot cheaper for patients and the insurance companies in the long run.
as one who takes diabetic meds, I agree, if the drug company didnt pay paula, they could lower the overall price of their drug for people who cant afford it.
there were many months I would skip a pill every few days in hopes to stretch them because of the price.
Paula Deen is a fame and money whore. Rolling in mayo and sliding in butter all the way to the bank. What a hack…..no wonder all her products end up at Big Lots .
FN does have one credible RD in their talent pool: Ellie Krieger. I have her book and the food is delicious and pretty.
She is SO underrated. I wish FN would do more to boost her popularity. Hers is the only healthy food that actually tastes wonderful.
Agreed on Mrs. Krieger. She not only made delicious and healthy food, but she had the credentials to back it up. Hopefully, she’s not cancelled, just on hiatus.
She’s actually on Cooking Channel. Just saw her this morning at 8:30.
And I wonder how Ellie feels about the french food of “hypocrite” bourdain?! I don’t think she would be nice to him. If he can bitches about other “cuisiniers”(french for cooks including chef cuisiniers Ie chief cook/chef de cuisine) then can other cooks on him What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
Probably no one will read this, since it’s way down at the bottom, but to explain in a nutshell how type 2 diabetes works: Your body either does not produce or is unable to use the insulin made by the pancreas. So the glucose created from the foods we eat does not get into the cells (insulin is the “key” that unlocks the cells to let glucose in). This creates fatigue, due to lack of energy glucose provides, and cravings for sweets, because the body does not know it actually has enough glucose. The glucose floats around in the blood, which causes high blood sugar readings. And blood with high concentrations of glucose is damaging to the body.
I wonder if part of the impetus for Bobby’s Cooking Channel show “Not My Mama’s Heterosexual” with the lighter recipes, blah, blah was Mama’s Type 2. The show is hilarious, by the way. In the last episode he was tossing around a small football in the kitchen and made a special effort to mention “my girlfriend Kate” and include a hot women in the kitchen as his food taster/guest. But it was interesting the way he touched a male chef he was interviewing on the art of cooking polenta.
HAHAHAHAHAAAA!!! Loooove it!
Never one to miss an opportunity:
When Booby finally comes out of the closet, she’ll start promoting gay cruises. Until there’s a way to make Bobby stays firmly locked up tight inside.
HAHAHAHAAAAA!!! Stop it! I’ve got the hiccups now!
I enjoy Paula’s first episodes, until she moved into her new house. After that, it has all been downhill. Paula’s announcement timing and subsequent endorsements show she is an opportunistic pig. In addition, her announcement that she will be donating money is also smoke and mirrors….IT IS A HUGE TAX WRITE OFF! She’s turned into just another loudmouthed, crude Southern woman (she isn’t a lady, not after Paula’s Party! Trash!) with fake eyelashes, Chicklet teeth and a witch’s cackle for a laugh. Keep her old shows on, but get rid of the new ones. I’m tired of her fakiness.
Did anyone happen to catch the latest episode that featured (for some odd reason) Liza Minelli? And what did Pawler bake? Why a big ol’ fat decadent chocolate cake! And what did they do with their cakes? Why took out their desserts to the henhouse where Liza with a Z serenaded a chicken while Pawler fed some of her big ol’ fatty sugary cake to the chickens!! She looooooves to spread the wealth..or in this case the diabeeeetus!
SHES NOT OBLIGATED TO SHARE HER PERSONAL BUSINESS WITH THE WORLD! WHO CARES IF SHE KEPT IT TO HERSELF FOR 3 WHOLE YEARS. GIVE ME A BREAK.
You know what? I have type 2 diabetes. You know what else? I would have it regardless of what I ate. For all the know-nothings and cat-callers here, you can develop it from a host of causes, including sheer genetics.
Secondly, Paula has always said her recipes were for moderate consumption. Moreover, why is she being singled out when there are loads of people pushing mexican and soul food, neither of which are any healthier than American southern cuisine? How about the possible carcinogens in all that grilled food Bobby Flay gets to tout all summer long? If he gets cancer, are you going to whine about that too?
So, she is acknowledging a very private thing and is advertising a drug that fights it. Nobody whines about rotund Wilfrid Brimley pushing diabetes supplies and oatmeal.
Paula Deen is one of the most down to earth cooks on the network. She’s no spring chicken anymore, and type 2 can be the result of age. So focus on the food if you wish, but the fact is that you aren’t her doctor and don’t have a clue what may have caused her to get this disease. At least do a little research before you get huffy and judgmental.
