Oh man, I hope they have these in Hawaii so my fave junk food blog (The Impulsive Buy: http://www.theimpulsivebuy.com) will review them! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Japanese flavors are more readily available there.

I’d try them, can’t be any worse than the Loaded Baked Potato and other flavors they’ve tried recently.

These flavors are marketed in Japan. I happen to catch a piece of Munchies Unwrapped last night and they showed these morsels of goodness.
hmmm well, I like seaweed flavor in other forms, but probably not as a Pringles chip. I’ve also seen crab-flavored chips from other companies. Grilled shrimp, now that’s unique. I can’t tell from the tag on the shelf in the picture.. where are these sold?

You guys are being awfully judgmental about artificial flavoring. They aren’t even overly strange flavors, like Stinky Tofu or Squid Blood. Just different.
Now if they dried and pressed an actual soft shell crab into a Pringle shape, that’d be a whole other story.
I’d at least try the seaweed flavor because, as I said above, I’ve enjoyed it a lot in other forms (around sushi, some TJ’s treats as Dank mentions in the first posting), but as a Pringle it might be a stretch.
At any rate, you make a good point. I’ve seen other Japanese products with odd flavors. Not overly strange or patently disgusting (subjective, I know), just something outside of what I am accustomed to tasting. And most probably at least worth a sample.
I think Doritos came out with some cheeseburger flavored chips here in the US not long back. Just as a test in (I think) limited markets. Horrible.

When I see a can of Pringles, I think of what Mitch Hedburg said…that the people at Pringles were pretty cool. The company was supposed to produce tennis balls, but one day, they got a delivery of potatoes instead of the balls. They said, fuck it, let’s just make potato chips…..

They used to make a corn chip style one, years and years ago. I just LOVED them. Been looking around forever. I don’t think they make them anymore.

According to what I’ve read, these are Thai pringles, not Japanese.
That being said, I’d actually be interested in trying all of them (though I’d be willing the bet the shrimp wouldn’t be that good). Of course, mobid curiousity does not beget necessity… so these would still quite qualify as unnecessary pringles.
My friends recently moved to Indonesia and they have the grilled shrimp Pringles there.
In Germany they have “Paprika” flavor. Just paprika and plain were the major flavors. Those crazy Germans ;)

In England, they have the most absurd chip flavors I’d ever seen. “Roast dinner with yorkshire pudding” may have been the strangest….

The most interesting thing about Pringles to me is that Proctor and Gamble loses money on every can of them (according to a friend of mind who worked for P&G for about four years). The can itself costs ridiculously more than any other company’s potato chip packaging and the chips cost much more than real potato chips to make. Real chips are just sliced potatos fried in oil, but Pringles have to be constructed out of potato, wheat starch, rice flour, etc. and then put through a press to make them uniform, to fit in the can. They may be gross, but according to my friend they were a labor of love for everyone involved in their development and kind of a snack dream come true for the President of P&G, who loved them so much he didn’t mind losing money on them.
Sorry, not buying that. The can is rolled lined cardboard. There’s nothing inherently expensive about it. And by using a potato flake with other ingredients and binders, the waste is alot less than using whole potatoes. And shaping them means the process is efficient too. P&C is a public company. The Pringles brand is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. There is no way they lose even a fraction of a cent on each can when they have stockholders to answer to with that kind of sales volume. It makes no business sense to have Pringles as a loss leader. We’re not talking “give away the razor to sell the blades” here.
You’ll have a better chance of convincing me that Rachel Ray is a master pastry chef.

Paprika flavored are also available in Italy. I’ve tried them and they’re pretty good!
Is it just me or do all Pringles taste the same? It’s like no matter what flavor they are supposed to be, they always taste the same. I hate Pringles and I will eat them as a last resort only.
I really, really like the new multigrain pringles. They taste like sunchips but are way cheaper.

I’ve had nori potato chips which were probably the best potato chips I’ve ever had and shrimp chips that were mighty tasty. Pringles flavors though….
Asians have a different palatte that’s all. In England you can get roast beef and pickled onion flavored chips.
I’d rather eat shrimp Pringles than a whole onion dropped in batter and deep-fried (or anything Paula Deen would put in front of me).

Heads up on the Pringles recall that LostinPlace and CherryRose posted about above! Stephen Colbert did a hilarious segment about this on his Comedy Central show last night. The two recalled products were “Taco Night” and “Cheeseburger” flavored Pringles (out of the dozens of other Pringles flavors that Stephen sweeped off his desk), with possible Salmonella contamination. Yuck.

Have never liked these processed weirdo textured “chips” in a tennis ball can. Funny that there is a recall just as we are discussing the variety of trendy flavors.

I accidentally ate seaweed-flavored Lay’s potato chips during a recent vacation to Thailand. The bag looks exactly like the sour cream and onion bag here in the USA, so I bought them by mistake. I actually ended up liking them a lot, so much that I bought a few bags to take home.
The 7-11s in that country are a veritable treasure trove of bizarre snack foods. I had a lot of fun stopping in every day and picking out something weird to try.
Gotta be honest, I’d totally try seaweed flavored pringles. Mmm nori.

sorry, but these are completely “ordinary” flavours over here in south east asia and including japan as well. ;)
Real shrimp made into crackers have been around forever in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, even Taiwan!
Actual baby crabs have been dried and packed as “snacks” in asia and of course, in Japan too ;)
As for seaweed snacks, it is featured everywhere in places such as Japan and Taiwan. Its an importsnt component to the people of Japan and s reflection of their history and cuisine.
It is really more of a regional and cultural taste, perhaps more acquired to others outside this region of the world.

The seaweed flavor appeals greatly. I’ve found over the years that shrimp flavored snacks could be good or bad, depending on who made them. Haven’t been able to bring myself to try the dried crabs, but I expect they may vary as much as the shrimp snacks do.
I’d try to get some of these snacks, but I’m on a low-sodium diet now, and there’s no way to work these in….
I would totally try the seaweed Pringles. But the others not so much.

When I lived in China, they had those Ritz Bits sandwich crackers. but the fillings tasted like nothing we have here. There were several different varieties, none of them labeled as to what they were, and they weren’t totally gross. But when you’re living in a foreign country and hoping for something familiar, like cheesy Ritz or peanut butter Ritz…this wasn’t it.

Around Thanksgiving, I started seeing ads for Cinnamon & Sugar Pringles and White Chocolate Peppermint. WTF?! Those flavors are nice, but in a potato chip? Call me crazy but I expect potato chips to be able to go with an entree. The dessert thing doesn’t work for me at all.
